I also like coffee, but I generally save that for when I'm with friends in social settings.

It always interests me how things like that are made. Because you need to have a very good understanding of the requirements of the software as well as how to make it. Like any programmers that make art tools are just super impressive to me, because they need to have some insight into art as well as coding.

Maybe. I'd be interested in working on a game that aids with language education at some point in the future, those kind of things are important and you rarely see effective ones.

Oh, that's a great idea! That kind of project could evolve into something really big, too, since you could expand into as many different languages as you like!

Language education in this country is really sub-par too, and I feel it deprives a lot of people of the ability to broaden their horizons and connect with the wider world. Hell, I'd even just be happy to translate a regular game, but that sounds really awesome.

Well the problem with speaking English is that you rarely have a reason to not speak English. It's a language that's taught pretty much anywhere in the world, so few people find the need to learn other things.

I believe there are a lot of games like that, I've probably played a few myself.

That's true, but that kind of attitude isn't entirely a correct one to have. Just because English is widely taught somewhere, for example in Japan, it doesn't mean that you can just go over there and expect people to understand you.

Besides that, there's certainly a market for such a game, too. Just look at the sheer amount of language aquisition software (Rosetta Stone for example) and phrasebooks that are already on the market.

Some kind of RPG where you travel to different lands where you have to learn aspects of different languages would be cool. Perhaps the focus would be less on learning different languages, but teaching people small parts of them to help them pick up different linguistic skills and ways of constructing sentences, which would then in turn boost their language learning.

The attitude is entirely the wrong one to have. It's like the age old story of the Englishman that goes to a restaurant in a foreign country and shouts "DO YOU DO CHIPS?" at a waiter who doesn't understand a word of English. It's difficult for people to communicate properly if they can't be understood, and even if the person you're talking to can understand English it sometimes helps to have a grasp of their first language.

I honestly think that there's a huge need for games like that really. From what I remember, there's significant evidence that attempting to gamify learning experiences leads to better retention.

It would be interesting to have something to enable people to pick up language acquisition skills, but I think for the majority of people you're looking at a situation where they want to learn a specific language and they'll be looking for a way to do that.

I would agree that it's entirely the wrong attitude to have, but it is, quite unfortunately, somewhat true that English is very widely spoken. For example, if you go to Sweden and try to speak Swedish, they're just gonna speak English back to you because they're so eager to use it.

And yeah- it would definitely be an interesting game to make, but how could we make it different from just having a regular game, that lets you change the language in the options menu? Perhaps some kind of dungeon where you have to choose the correct word for something to get past it?
