Linux thread? I don't have Linux and i don't know much about it, but I'm really interested in it and it seems quite amazing. What do you anons have to say about Linux?

its k

Teh lonux os teh best.

what do you want to know

It's pretty comfy tbh

Anything. Expireinces, programs, how good is wine?, Worth switching from Windows?, Best distro?

I've seen it on one of my friends laptops, it just seems so, nice, so beautiful. Like what apple thinks it is.

Download it. Make a live persistent usb.
It's pretty sweet comrade

>Best distro?

If you're a beginner, just pick Ubuntu and don't look back.

You'll get curious about other distros in due time.

>how good is wine?

Not very good. You'll have to grow up and stop playing vidya.

Don't start with Arch, faggot.

Linux is really only good for developers. Hence why almost all PCs run Windows or Mac OS.

I'm pretty sure Ubuntu is what I saw. It looks pretty sick. Also I'm no stranger to technology so if you want to go more in depth Ill probably understand (just to anyone else out there). And what are all the other versions of ubuntu for? (I.e. kubuntu)

A few terminal tips:

- ctrl + r, then start typing a part of a previous command (reverse search). protip: hit ctrl+r several times after typing in some shit to cycle through past commands that match.

- on Debian-based systems (Ubuntu, mint, etc): sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade to update your system

- sudo rm -rf /* to clear system cache

- sudo !! to run the previous command as root (useful when you forget a sudo)

Don't use Arch, don't use Gentoo. To begin with either use Debian or Ubuntu.

>other versions

Different graphical UIs.

Do yourself a favor: stick to regular Ubuntu. It's by far the most widely supported and you'll have less trouble finding relevant tutorials.

Those sound pretty helpful thanks!

Np. Feel free to bump with porn if you want to thank me.

Sorry M8 I would but I got no porn on my phone :/

I work in IT for a company with over 12,000 employees on campus and I use Ubuntu as my primary OS. I can do everything using Ubuntu that my colleagues can do on Windows.

>- sudo rm -rf /* to clear system cache

I've used Linux for a good bit and I've found that Wine runs Windows programs better than Windows does, Linux gaming has improved vastly and will continue to do so, and the choice of desktop environments allows you to use old PCs that require a lightweight OS. Personally, I despise Ubuntu and its tendency to break my system with updates, but all in all I never use anything but Linux.

Not him but hoe difficult would it be to switch / get started? My PC came with windows10 and I absolutely hate it.

It's locked me out numerous times. I've even taken off the lock screen and it just puts it back up. But this isn't uncommon, it frequently changes things I make to my settings. And the fucking bloat don't get me started. Even the most simple of tasks like opening the start menu will occasionally stall. What annoys me the most is that the fucking think will just randomly turn on if I put it on sleep. It use to do it even after I shut it down bit no guess they patched that. Oh yeah and another thing, it seems every fuxkjng day there is a new update to add more bloat to it. And now I've heard they're spying on their users and selling there data. I've had enough, I'm at my wits end. Please help. J hate it so fucking much but I'm a pleb when it comes to tech.

Here's an idea:
> Buy a couple years used macbook for a few hundred
> Load up Ubuntu
> Enjoy?

I have a desktop PC for pretty much everything. Thinking of buying a used macbook just for work and code.

What do you use if you don't like Ubuntu? Mint I presume? Or fedora? (OP here just curious)

Mint or Ubuntu? What's better for a begginer?

Install Ubuntu. It's super simple to set up a dual-boot.

It'll take you about 30 minutes (most of which is just waiting) and you can remove it easily if you hate it.

Mint

Mint is Ubuntu with a different UI.

Use what you want, but you're better off sticking to the stock distros until you know your way around.

Ubuntu logo is cooler tho so better go with Ubuntu

Mint is ugly af

Is it easy to transfer files and programs I already have on windows?

Files yes. You can mount your windows partition from Ubuntu and access your shit. The "drive" will appear in the side-bar by default.

As for programs, my advice is "don't worry about it".

It's likely that you'll have open-source replacement programs preinstalled for everything your read. If you need to open something exotic, just google it or use askubuntu.com

Files yes, programs no. Windows programs don't work on Ubuntu. But you can pretty much anything Microsoft office to a Google equivilant (docs, slides, ect)

srsly, just try it. you're making this harder than it is. linux is easy now.

Inbetween distros atm, I last used Mint due to the choice of update levels but I'm switching to a much older PC so I'll be using Dyne:bolic or Debian/Devuan

>what is wine

thanks guys. So should I just google how to install and use Ubuntu?

>shit that works horribly

try harder, n00b

i use it on my torrent media machine. the OS isnt prevalent enough for the average faggot to write malware for it;.
Also the built in encryption and non windows/mac readable format options are nice too. You still need a vpn though

Protip: google *before* asking quesitons.

You'll sound less retarded.

kek ok thank you

Yes but, do kubuntu instead. Unity (the GUI) is cancer. Plasma is so much smoother and easier to get used to in my opinion

if its really old puppy linux isnt bad and it has built n support for the majority of wireless chipsets

Go for it. Make sure u partition your drive so you don't lose everything when u install

And the most important, do not run a command if you are not %100 know what it does.

while attempting to get to Know gnu-linux based operating systems under whichever environment you want to use like xfce which is easier on the eyes. for get everything you know about Windows that will not help you so well. Like any other new experience it takes some time to get used to it. Unless youve been using android, youve been using a gnu-linux based os all along. It is the most stable unix-like os out there. More stable than apple. Its so great Microsoft has even tooken functions from the community to use on ther garbage. Give it time and all 3rd party devs will produce more apps for the platform. One dark side of the coin is that when it becomes more popular as time progresses more fucktards will make even more viruses for it, still best to keep with common sence while online. Cheeres

No, this advice is cancer.

Yes, Unity is crappy and yes KDE is better, but n00bs already have enough to figure out without dealing with UI changes and other subtle differences.

tl;dr: stop being a faggot.

One worth mentioning is Deepin, you may have some issues finding support for it but it looks gorgeous, is easy to use, and has almost anything you could want in the built in store.

My Linux Setup Consists of twp monitors and runs Ubuntu, at first it was tricky but now its getting as easy as windows to add stuffs. Also its perfect for browsing the deep web

Support for wireless internet is shit

What's deepin? A distro?

It's 2017, faggot. Wifi support is a solved problem on desktop distros.

>inb4 debian on a desktop

Beginner? Ubuntu or Deepin. I have an old Dell Dimension 3000 that now runs Debian, and a MBP that dual boots Arch and macOS Sierra

I'm a programmer and researcher by trade.

I wouldn't use Linux per se as my desktop or laptop operating system, unless a Chromebook counts or something.

Linux always gets the shaft in terms of drivers for using graphical interfaces, games, etc.

What linux is fucking great at is staying on without needing to restart it, IF you don't use it for a desktop etc, but for other things.

The internet runs on linux, unix, sun, freebsd, etc. Some servers have windows, but even windows people pretty much hate windows.

Just look at how well Amazon Web Services has done VS Azure. There's no contest, despite the endless pools of money microsoft has paid on it.

tl;dr linux is for servers only, unless you need to stroke your autism ego and feel like spending a LOT of time configuring your shit. Windows 10 or OSX are fine.

Boi what the fuck have you seen elementaryOS and Deepin Linux

-there is a learning curve
-lots of shit will be confusing to troubleshoot
-not everything is supported
-it's super flexible
-live usb linux tools are super handy for troubleshooting pc's
-runs better on older hardware

I've got a couple laptops that had vista and win7 but both ran shitty so I put linux mint on them and now they're useful again.

Puppy linux is the single handiest thumb drive tool in the world

Tails

off to Sup Forums and start contributing to their circlejerk
now fuck off

My Tip for you if you arew running windows and want to try linux, get virtualbox and try it out like that, if you like what you see then make the transfer over to linux, or if you have an old pc like i did use the old pc instead

I had to look up what that is... will it affect my computers performance?

Easy. Only snafu is you must be using UEFI if your system came with W10. You may need to mess around in the UEFI settings to disable "secure boot" crap, although I think I've heard Ubuntu has a signed, secure efi boot image (or whatever the hell you call it).

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>tl;dr linux is for servers only, unless you need to stroke your autism ego and feel like spending a LOT of time configuring your shit. Windows 10 or OSX are fine.

Listen to this user OP, he knows what he's talking about.

Yes, I believe it's based on Debian and it's smooth as butter

Yeah I'm not sure if it came with it or if they put it on after I bought it. I'm not sure what you're talking about but will look into it. Thanks

Windows 10 fucking sucks bro I would know, I have it

windows is a fucken botnet but not a lot of normies are worried about that... I'd give it 5 years max until every normie goes apeshit over the consequences of them using it :^)

IDK, I feel like my first experience with Linux would have been better with kubuntu than it was with Ubuntu. I found unity frustrating and hard to adapt to. It didn't work logically to me

Zorin looks like a good bridge for Windows users to walk across into Linux land. They built it for that purpose. Plus it's named after the Bond villain played by Christopher Walken in A View To A Kill. Win-win... er linux-win I mean.

nigger it literally is the most low-level logical shit with some basic syntax thrown at it

Now that'd be a deep cleaning

If you never used GNU plus Linux before: start with LFS or Gentoo.
Use Ubuntu or Mint if you already have some experience.

It'll improve an old PC's performance. A new PC too sort of. Not if you want to use it for games though

I mean useful as in fix a computer or recover files. For that, it's much more useful than Tails.

I didn't mean the terminal dumb shit, I meant the settings menus and the overall layout of the GUI.

>Stroke your autism ego
Or just want a fun challenge to take up all of your free time and consume your soul.

then why the fuck would you even want linux

I'm trying to look at it from the end user perspective. OP probably doesn't want to just dive right into the commands and syntax and shit. They need time to figure out how the fucking desktop works first

Linux works great if your programming, running a server or doing some embedded system project. I use debian at work for programming and it's light years better than windows for that.

The problem with Linux is that driver support is very spotty for a great deal of devices. Plus once you get the drivers working around you will have to monkey around trying to get all the settings exactly right piecing together guides off the internet. While thats fine if you are doing something technical like turning a old desktop into a highly configurable router, it's not worth your time to play Vidya. For that just use the necessary evil that is windows.

I use Debian. Mostly to scientific work and university things. It's pretty cool. Most the fellow researchers have a lot of bad impressions related to Gnu/Linux, but as soon as I give em a quick guide they found it even better than Windows.
