It's not one of my strengths, I'll admit.
I'd say Japanese and German both have their own challenges, but they can both be overcome through practice and just using the language and taking a smart approach.
Japanese's biggest obstacle is kanji, but if you lean the radicals, of which there are only 200-ish, as opposed to over 2,000 kanji, then more often than not you'll be able to derive the meaning and reading of kanji to a certain extent.
With German, it's definitely the grammar and the cases, but that can be overcome through just simple exposure and repetitive use until it becomes intuitive.
In both cases I highly recommend going to the country you're trying to learn the language in and actually using it. I lived in Italy for 2 and a half months, and France for 6 months, and my ability in both languages shot up. It got to the point where my English was starting to get rusty by the time I came home.
