Can anyone explain?

Pic related is clearly fucked, but what is it for? Is it to sympathetically portray real conditions and matters, as art should do? Or is it just fucked?

It's for Sotos' wank collection.

honestly i think buyers market is effective as a piece of art.
it's not a piece meant to be enjoyed. it's there to shock you and provoke an emotional response, and for that its effective.
he has some collage pieces on several whitehouse records and in that setting it also works pretty well, even though i tend to skip the tracks most of the time.

edges for the sake of edges

>it's not a piece meant to be enjoyed. it's there to shock you and provoke an emotional response, and for that its effective.

this. I've never listened to the whole CD though, IMO when you've been through the first "song", you've had enough

no

i've given it a full listen once or twice, but i dont see myself listening to it again in the near future.

> he didn't masturbate while listening
here's your problem

its not music

good job dude you're right

...

It's pointless, nihilistic garbage. Ever since human civilization came into being, people have acted in monstrous ways. We don't need shock "art" to remind us that it is horrible to rape and murder children. You can argue that art has no inherent purpose, so something like Buyer's Market doesn't have to justify its existence. In a sense this is true of course, but personally I believe this kind of relativism is just an excuse for indifference to real suffering. Instead of mirroring real-life atrocities in musical form, why not make something which can inspire people to do better? /rant

Sotos was an actual pedophile

If you think he meant to make an artistic statement with this; you're either a dumb wannabe hipster or an actual pedophile yourself

Agree. Never looking at this nonsense again, gonna go do some good in the world. OP out

>Sotos was an actual pedophile
Does that suddenly mean that his perspective isn't worthwhile? I think his work is interesting simply because he's writing from the perspective of one of the most reviled sexual psychologies in the world. His work is completely uncompromising and utterly unique. He doesn't make money off of it and it's been creating problems for him since the 80's to the extent that the child pornography arrest fucked him up worse than he already was. It's pure, unfiltered self-expression with little ulterior motive, as far as I can see. That doesn't mean I think he's a good person or I'd let him watch my kids, but that's unimportant as far as the art itself goes imo.

When I was 15 I downloaded this album on the family computer (kek) and my mum found it. Her questioning me about it was the most awkward, painful experience of my life at that point. She might've known that I just liked edgy art, but it still felt like I broke something our relationship. Most parents find their kids downloading porn or pics of britney spears, but not 100s of audio recordings of rape victims. I am a dumbass

this didn't happen

Shock value.
I think it's interesting because it has an extremely powerful emotional impact on you (well, on me, at least). It's really fucked up but it just shows "how it is" with no distance or empathy whatsoever. It's like you're immersed in those awful stories and you can't really look away.

People blame Sotos and say he's a monster for releasing stuff like this, but he's really just showing you how awful the world can be. The killers/rapists are the monsters.
Now some speculate he actually enjoys this, and i gotta say if your whole career is based around showing how horrible people can be without any empathy, he might probably be a sociopath to some extent

It's not even music it's an audio book about plowing kids

This

Yes it did. It isn't even a farfetched story. I fucked up. I made a thread about it after it happened a few years ago

I think this is the first intelligent post I've ever read on Sup Forums

>i don't like it so it shouldn't exist
(You)

>all art should be jolly golly good stuff that brings the best out of people!!

So these recordings wouldn't be able to make someone think about these atrocities and convince them to do something about them?

Honestly Buyer's Market really isn't that shocking or disgusting and doesn't dramatize it's content, it's a very grounded piece
It isn't just a compilation, the arrangement of the sound clips is very intentional.

I think sotos was trying to plainly as possible depict pure evil and the damage it causes. In '93 America's obsession with serial killers was just starting (with movies around that time like Silence of the Lambs) this was also around the time that daycare and teacher/student sex scandals were hot topics in the news. Sotos wanted to cut through the bullshit and spectacle that comes with the media and take a cold hard look at what is actually left in the wake of an abuse case. that's what it's purpose was, to have the victims truly be heard, all the victims including the families who've lost people they loved.

also it's for lolifags and neckbeards from Sup Forums and Sup Forums to jerk off to.

i'm afraid to listen to this album, is there any reason i should or am i better off without it?

don't listen to it, it's just fucking upsetting

some parts made me gasp in shock but you should be fine

Better off without it honestly. It's like when you go into a gore thread on /gif/ and you're so disgusted but you can't look away. That's what the album is, but in audio form. By all means if you like fucked up shit then try it.

Will definitely leave a sour feeling in you like these anons said, gore in audio form is pretty accurate, something youd want to anticipate and expose yourself to for the shock/reality of it

>You can argue that art has no inherent purpose
Please do, because you cant just justify your argument on an empty claim.

The purpose of art is to extend human expression to a level above regular conversation.

But Art reflects society. It isn't supposed to be a guide for how humankind should live. It's meant to be real.

Even hopeful, happy and "positive" songs or artists are just a reflection of a part of our nature. Horrible, crude or "nihilistic" art is also a part of what we are as a species.

Just my thoughts.

BTW I listened to Buyer's Market once fully and it made me sick but I would never say it shouldn't exist. If it generates a reaction, even one as yours, it has made a point.

It doesn't matter if he did or did not meant to make anything. Art isn't supposed to have a meaning. It's the job of the listener/reader/viewer to find (or not) a meaning and connect to it. That's why we all like different things, each of us finds different meaning in stuff.

this

The idea that presenting documentary material that listens to the sufferers of abuse is 'pointless' and cannot inspire us to anything is utterly retarded.
You cannot mount a material response to anything in the world unless you confront and understand its material effects.

I never plan on listening to this guy's work so I have to ask: Is there any music? Is it purely audio recordings or is there background music while someone talks like in a Godspeed album?

>Is it purely audio recordings
yes

there's no music, unless you'd consider some shuffling of papers music. it's just people talking.

So why is called an album if there's no music?

>being this pedantic

there's some piano in the background on the track Victims

Put it better than I ever could

>look up album thinking i got the gist of it already beforehand
>hear first 20 seconds of mcmartin
>remove headphones

He claimed to have good intentions by showcasing abuse for awareness of sorts, but that claim was most likely a cop out. He indeed was a pedophile and just said that to cover the truth - to live through those real life accounts as a fantasy , pretending to be the instigator of those tragic events.

The point of transgressive art in general is to bring attention to things that are normally ignored or politely overlooked by society. This is actually very worthwhile for a number of reasons. For one thing, it allows issues to be addressed - people committing these vicious acts benefit from society ignoring them and making them taboo.
For another thing, by looking at these unsavory aspects of life, we lessen the shame people feel for them. In addressing abuse, addiction, mental illness, etc. at a societal level, people are better equipped to deal with these issues.

I'm not a fan of Whitehouse or this album, but this album is part of a broader movement of artists doing similar things, like SPK, who tackled mental illness, Throbbing Gristle, who addressed addiction, Einstürzende Neubauten, who addressed urban alienation and decay, Brighter Death Now, who focused on violence and trauma, and so on. Sotos may be a less than honorable member of this movement, but the broader movement of transgressive art, and early industrial more specifically, is worthwhile. In a way, punk rock has similar transgressive aims, albeit in a more mild way.

I can upload a collection of Sotos's writings to Mega if you want to get a better picture of the man (old magazines and stuff)
I listened to the whole thing in one sitting and only twinged once, but it is a harrowing experience
GOAT plunderphonics

>People blame Sotos and say he's a monster for releasing stuff like this, but he's really just showing you how awful the world can be. The killers/rapists are the monsters.
fun piece of trivia: sotos himself is a pedophile and a monster.

I'm seeing this claimed a lot without a source.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Sotos
>Pure magazine and after

shit that's really sad man

I see where you're coming from and agree somewhat but keeping records of atrocities like the holocaust or rwandan genocide is important, it's humbling, it shows humanity bare. I think this record is very much something like that on a smaller scale.
On Sotos himself: he doesn't seem to be a pedophile from what I can tell completely, but he has been found to have cp in his possession so I'd take everything to do with him with a grain of salt. The guy did throw bottles and pick fights when he was in Whitehouse.
I remember him saying something along the line of "if you think this is important you're wrong" in an interview so the whole nihilism complaint is probably close to the mark.
He also claims he doesn't try to be provocative or transgressive, so again take everything he says with a grain of salt.

t. vapid normie

no one would care tht much stop lying

It's not that bad. Everyone here is just a pussy. Go for it, it's interesting

Because nobody is going to call it a "collection of field recordings and interviews" when "album" is more concise and gets the point across just as well.

This just reads like he got too edgy.

The market is us Sup Forums.....
were the buyers.........

jej, I had something similar with Anal Cunt

This.

>t. dude who voted for Trump

>The publication, Pure, detailed "the pleasures of child abuse, torture and murder in pornographic detail" and that "child abuse is a sublime pleasure".

I think that it could potentially be a real eye opener for some young, dumb kid who doesn't really understand this type of thing beyond what they've seen in movies. You see a lot of teenagers and college aged kids desensitized to atrocities, but they don't acknowledge what's left in its wake.

Pretty much this. There is no real message to be taken from it, it's for the shock value. Any social commentary you take from it is your own.

lol young Trump fans are the ultimate nihilists

You dont know what plunderphonics means

I listened to this maybe 7 years ago and I don't remember anything incredibly shocking or horrific about it. Mostly just interviews of sexual abuse victims. Am I wrong?

In the last 7 years rape has been memed as the ultimate, most unforgivable crime, so this album is actually probably more shocking now than when it was released.

>raping kids isn't as bad as people say

God, this made me cry...

Here's something scary. Somewhere on Sup Forums right now..RIGHT NOW, there is ONE user that has and or will do something like what's depicted in this album.

I think you're right.
An interesting side note, I was reading a textbook on deviance the other day. In academia people who study deviance and explore the taboo elements of our society tend to get treated as if they themselves were deviant. This really seems to fit in with all the
posts like this and such. Saying Sotos is a pedophile for making that zine is like saying that he's a serial killer or a Nazi.

...

is it edgy i jacke d off to this album

i'm going to find you and I'm going to hurt you.

I agree, the 90's had an obsession with shock value. Murder mystery docu series were in their prime too during that time as well as satanist witch hunting.

Children is just horrific.

The satanist panic audio is actually a really fascinating study in hysteria and authority figures leading themselves to the answers they already believe to be true. That material is relevant and meaningful and interesting.

The opening track is desolate though. Sotos maybe just wanted to shock; maybe he likes it. but yeah, puts it best in that it just tinges everything else on the album for me. It's draining to sit through.

>it's best not to think about societal problems on any significant level and hide ourselves in rainbows and sunshine until they go away
I didn't know there were so many sheeple on Sup Forums. Might as well rename it /nu/.

>he wrote and published this
i.warosu.org/data/lit/img/0040/05/1375875047171.jpg
>not a pedophile
fuck off you retard

>by bringing attention to heinous shit through art you're actually encouraging people to be indifferent toward it as opposed to ignoring it outright like people ought to because personally these things make me uncomfortable and therefore shouldn't exist
Imagine having such a disproportionate estrogen level that you start acting like a seventy year old woman at age 22.

I have a couple of questions for people arguing that there is value in art like this existing: did any of you acquire a better understanding of why these crimes are committed? Did it make you more compassionate and caring? Can anyone actually say they became a better person by sitting through a record like this?

>Producer : Steve Albini
