this is a joke right?

t. first day on Sup Forums

i think it is a joke, but black sabbath is the clear superior

Led Zepp and it's not even close

Go back to r/music

>no bolt thrower
get off my board.

Have you thanked the riff god today?
youtube.com/watch?v=MAs8Gp5IJiM

is uncle acid on that list? high on fire? sleep?

no, but the band who's riffs they steal is

I enjoy using both communities to discover and discuss music :^)

emulate, sure. steal?

60% of sabbaths material was weird ass dream pop type music.

I opened the poll after I posted. Zep is without question the best group on there, and they stole their riffs too.

...

If your answer isn't Black Sabbath you haven't listened to enough Black Sabbath

Zeppelin has way better riffs than Sabbath

prove me wrong

protip: you can't

As far as strictly "riffs" are concerned, Sabbath, but I think Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, and Mick Taylor are all better guitarists than Iommi.

Also take your dadrock shit back to where you came from.

also this

zeppelin's riffs would be better if they were not played with that chicken scratch distortion. not as meaty and satisfying as sabbath.

well. yea.

zep played a tele lipstick pup through a supra amp

while iommi played in c# through a hiwatt

Black Sabbath of course.
Gardenia has the greatest riff of all time though.

You forgot Sabbath Bloody Sabbath man

Kashmir is alright at best, Coheed And Cambria played that riff better in Welcome Home and it's /still/ Coheed's most over-rated song

>Coheed And Cambria played that riff better in Welcome Home

please end yourself, jesus you have awful taste

Tell me how I'm wrong. I'll listen.

Kashmir is a perfectly crafted, timeless masterpiece

what you posted is some fucking hamfisted meme music for energy drink autists

I'm sorry, what I meant to say was "Tell me how I'm wrong using a thought-out, evidence-based argument", not petty insults.

>claims something is better
>doesn't use evidence to explain why
>asks for evidence to explain why it's not better

is this autism?

How can Zeppelin even compete?

black sabbath followed by slayer and then megadeth

No, it's just me being lazy, but sure I'll give it a crack. The riff in Kashmir is just the same triplet over and over. For 8 minutes it's the same fucking thing, and though this isn't a compositional criticism the tone sucks, there's no body to it at all. The riff in Welcome Home is the same /basic/ structure but the phrasing towards the end of each riff varies, and then during the verses it undergoes a dynamic shift and starts building in intensity. It's just, in my opinion, way more satisfying to hear.

Motley Crue

mick mar's riffs are why I started playing stringed instruments

Deep Purple

Some riffs in Shout at the Devil are actually pretty good.

Agreed, also Dr. Feelgood has one of the heaviest riffs of any 80's hair band

Led Zeppelin doesn't even have Led Zeppelin riffs. So, Sabbath riffs = a million > LZ riffs = (empty set). Math is easy.

riff kings?

Megadave is single handedly the greatest metal musician of all time
>lyrics
>leads
>riffs
>vocals
Mastadon is pretty fucking good, but it takes 3 people to do what dave does on his own

>lyrics
>leads
>riffs
>vocals

Doesn't even come close to dave

...

In general, sure I can see that but Claudio is an infinitely more diverse and capable vocalist. Megadeth deserves all the praise it gets for how influential it is and was and holds its place in the Big 4 for a reason, and given they're in different musical contexts it's hard to compare compositionally, but Claudio has at least as much capability as a riff-writer and soloist. Dave has his moments when it comes to clean singing (A Tout Le Monde comes to mind, one of my favorite songs), and yeah, sure, thrash calls for harsher vocals but Dave isn't even a consistently /good/ singer let alone /great./ Claudio's vocal range spans several octaves and when you strip away the shitty pop punk aspects of the first few Coheed albums (they really didn't mature their sound until around No World For Tomorrow imo), you find a /lot/ more vocal diversity and layered arrangements. Claudio's skill in writing not only lead vocal parts but /backup/ vocal parts is huge.

Seems arbitrary to compare the two but if we're talking about musicians who do lyrics, lead and rhythm guitar, and vocals, Dave is awesome in his own context but, imo, far outclassed by Claudio.

Haven't, but thanks for the reminder. Also, he drinks Rolling Rock. I feel like slightly less of a slob for it being my cheap beer of choice now lol

Hiwatt nigga, that was a Laney Supergroup. Quite different. And Page mostly played with humbuckers, a la the LP. Tele was the first year or so tops.

Also, throwing Sleep in for an honorable mention.
