So Sup Forums how would one start on the path to becoming a librarian. I love books and I'd like to know how I could become one in the future. I'm presently a Marine and honestly I feel like I just enjoy relaxed life to much to stay in the military game. I just wanna do my enlistment honorably and go a different path in life. So how would I go about becoming one? Best places to live? Honestly specifically I'd like to be a librarian in Alaska. These are just dreams though.

Huh. Are you me? Post MOS.

I'm a combat engineer

Not bad, user. Coming from a dumb grunt, your best bet is probably to find a library that needs assistants and try to get hired. If they aren't hiring, volunteer.

Also, to add to this, prior government experience would look stellar on a resume sent to the Library of Congress.

A lot of libraries this day and age require a degree in library sciences. So there you go: It's not a common degree, so the pool of competition will be small.

You'll need a master's degree in library sciences to start

Rah, well I'll just save my money to get to Alaska.

Second this. If you are serious about working at a library you will need a master's degree in library science. You should look into whether you qualify for the GI bill, etc.

Also, there are a lot of different types of librarians (research, academic, public library, children's, etc.). Think about what you might want and then try to volunteer in that setting. It would give you a chance to see what those librarians do.

Source: My wife is a librarian.

Could I volunteer or find a librarians assistant job with only a bachelors degree?

You need to get a lot of internships bro. My mom is a district manager of a city's public libraries, and she needed to get a masters degree in library science (yes it's a thing) from an American library Association (ALA is a thing too) accredited school. Its a really noble and rewarding career and is surprisingly more social than most people would think. Many libraries are also liberal to giving internships and volunteer programs to those that are looking for them. But beware that it is a public job, meaning you'll have to deal with crazy homeless people, girls nude camming on one of the computers, gays, niggers, and having to call the cops on belligerant people. other than that, being a library is very awesome and incredibly resourceful.

Probably. Most public libraries are severely underfunded and understaffed, especially in rural communities. They'll take anyone who isn't a complete nigger.

Yes, most libraries need volunteers and will happily give you letters of rec or serve as a reference for applying to other libraries.

Same fag here, I live in a california suburb, so you'll want to live in either a bustling metropolis, or a richer, predominently white, suburb. the latter will be more peaceful and you'll see regulars more often, but the former will be more social and you'll be more involved with your city. Both will have you knowing your neighbors and feeling connected to where you live. i prefer a suburb, personally, but the city may be better financially b/c apartments and public transit.

Sweet, so I'll use my GI bill to get a bachelors degree and get a starting position as a library assistant. Would I be more likely to be hired due to being male or would it put me at a disadvantage?

Would being male help or hurt my chance of a position? Also I'm white. Would military experience do anything to help a resume for one? My present plan would be to go to college for a bachelors degree, most likely debt free, save money while in the Corps, then move somewhere where I could start as an assistant and work my war up to being a librarian

Gender doesnt really matter in the library game, but being a veteran actually could help you for secondary reasons like emergency training and physicality. You dont really neeed to be a book worm to be a librarian either, you kinda have to be half decent at math and catagorizing things as well as have great people skills.

Im the same fag in all these posts. librarians do make good pay, especially if you can budget it and live a comfortable lifestlyle. Also, librarians have no take home work and youre guaranteed a steady solid paycheck if you put in your hours.

>California
Probably the reason the requirements are so high. You don't need to go to college to learn the Dewey system, but California has a hard-on for unnecessary degrees to keep that sweet gov't grant money flowing in.

Sorry, user. You're probably a cool dude, but I fucking despise your state.

Thanks, I'm no stranger to hard work. I'll try to make it happen, it'd honestly be a pretty cool job in my oppinion, not to mention to huge access to books I'd have.

I get that, its a nice place though, but the universities are expensive as fuck, and most of the people have their heads up their asses. I can't speak for other states, you're right on that, but in CA, you'll make more than most places and the weather is pretty nice. Plus, a degree can never hurt.

Yeah dude, being a librarian comes in clutch more often than not. It really is quite the resource, not just for books, but also local events, getting to know your community, computers, printing services and you'll likely learn a good amount of CIS work since everything is digital these days.

You need to buy a Delorian so you can go back into the past to the Dark Ages before the internet when people actually needed things like Libraries and encyclopedias. Back to the days before internet porn when a teen user needed to go to the library to steal the Swimsuit Issue or at least an issue with Kristy Yamaguchi so he could have inspirado and get his fap on.

>when people actually needed things like Libraries and encyclopedias
Judging from the state of the internet, and the majority of the people who inhabit it, people still do, and more than ever.

This is true, also poorer high school students that need the library as a resource for success do actually exist, and frankly often restore my faith in humanity.

God, it just occurred to me that I haven't been to my library in months. When I first got out, I'd be in there every week at least.

Thread's dying. Quick, post bookslut!
