So I watched this with 6 of my friends, 2 of which NEVER SAW THE ORIGINAL FILM. We all tried to be open minded about this shit and said it would be a win-win (for us) wasting about 38 dollars for all of us (we watched 2D) because we said that if the film was horrible we get to complain about it and shit on it all night while drinking and eating pizza and if the film was good then we'll be thoroughly surprised.

we all fucking liked it, solid 6-7/10. We asked the 2 people who never saw the original in their lives what they thought about the film and they both loved the film (I was also explaining all the cameos and references to them so they really didn't know shit). They said it stood on its own fairly well and the subtle jokes and british-like humor worked well for them.

yea, no, shill

It's pretty much how I felt about Spy. I thought it was gonna be horrible but was surprised that it was actually funny.

>They said it stood on its own fairly well
How the fuck would they know?

>subtle jokes and british-like humor
Is that what they call it when characters mumble awkwardly and call attention to the joke to form the punchline? None of the humor I've seen from this movie has been remotely subtle in any sense of the word.

>solid 6-7/10
Is that supposed to be a good score? Your indecision tells me you regret wasting your time, and like this person you will forget every joke that wasn't in the trailers and retain nothing meaningful from a movie that ultimately offered you nothing outside of the moment you were mindlessly consuming it.

Nah whatever, I don't care that much but I know I won't be seeing this movie

>british-like humour

as a brit i am offended

Some movies are just mindless entertainment. Do I think Spy was comedy kino? No. Nothing wrong with just enjoying something that isn't going to make the criterion collection.

That's the point of BAIT

Bait.

That's a fine opinion, but choices matter regardless of how important they are to ourselves. The more pressure there is to support a movie like Spy, the more influence it retains.

'Simultaneously broad and progressive, Spy offers further proof that Melissa McCarthy and writer-director Paul Feig bring out the best in one another -- and delivers scores of belly laughs along the way.'

That's from the RT page for Spy, and it doesn't exactly paint a picture of 'mindless entertainment'.

>How the fuck would they know
they thought it stood on its own fairly well without the correlation with the original ghostbusters. Of course they would fucking know that especially since they dont have "muh nostalgia" and "muh reboot cash grab" mentality with the film since they never saw the original

It's influence will ultimately be determined by its own merits. I had extremely low expectations for Spy but enjoyed myself. But like you said, in a previous post it's ultimately forgettable, as is 99% of the entertainment consumed.

You can't know something 'stands on its own' compared to something else without first-hand knowledge of both subjects. They thought it was a good movie, but they couldn't possibly know how it compared to the original in any way.

Seems to me that if someone can enjoy a movie without being in on the references and jokes of the franchise, then that means the movie stands on its own. It's like if someone enjoyed TFA despite not having a connection with Han Solo, Chewie, R2-D2 etc.

>It's influence will ultimately be determined by its own merits. I had extremely low expectations for Spy but enjoyed myself.

Well said, the separated statement and opinion will keep autists like me off your back.

>british-like humor
This just means saying shit with a wacky face and affected voice these days.

I don't know when the brits stopped caring, but all the humor they import these days is shit, but they know people eat it because of the posh accent (see: The IT Crowd).

Why would people come to Sup Forums to lie, right guys?

>we fucking liked it

so all you morons have same idea, or this is terrible shitposting?

I went with about 20 of my closest friend. 2 were black females. One black male. 7 white guys, 4 white girls. 2 asian females, 2 asian males and 2 transexuals. One was a ftm and the othe mtf.

It was sooooo much fun. Everyone loved it. By the end of the film we were all screaming, yelling and clapping at everything happening on screen. The whole theater was having a great time. A couple of the girls were having so much fun they threw their tampons at the screen.

What are your top 10 films of all time?

>It's pretty much how I felt about Spy. I thought it was gonna be horrible but was surprised that it was actually funny.

you're a traitor to the male gender. hand in your penis.

You're confusing enjoying a singular movie with enjoying a movie separately to the films before it. One cannot know a movie 'stands on its own' compared to a film they haven't seen.

Since you've seen both Ghostbusters, you can confirm their enjoyment, just as you can confirm the Star Wars example because you've seen the earlier films as well. If you asked those friends how it compares to the original film, you would receive a false answer.

Agree that the movie was okay, cameos and villain were weak, some of the jokes didn't land, and it had pacing issues, but I thought for the most part it was funny and enjoyable.

how do i get the job this person has? i'd post bullshit for money, i do it for free all the time, i even pretended this was a movie wasn't terrible the other day to see if i could get a reaction.

Pardon me friend but I think you're the one confusing enjoying a single movie with being able to determine whether it's derivative or better/worse/adds something compared to the originals. Standing on its own means it's solid without reference to it's predecessors.

BTW I haven't seen ghostbusters and probably won't until it hits DVD.

bump for the pleb pretending he isn't some tasteless imdb buff

oh not that i actually saw it, will pirate/stream oneday.

Enjoying the singular movie independently of any other does not mean 'it stands on its own' until the singular viewer knows they are not missing anything crucial to the complete enjoyment of the newer film that would otherwise negatively impact their first viewing retroactively.

This is why people ask only those who have seen a film series if they can enjoy a sequel without having seen the others, and why OP asked his friends if they enjoyed the film without having seen the predecessor. Only someone who had seen each movie could confirm that - having enjoyed the film themselves alongside their friends - it does indeed stand on its own.

My bastard son said it sucked halfway through. We went home and watched 2002 Scooby-Doo instead. Same graphics, better writing, better acting.

But they haven't seen the original you fucking retard. Yes it's bait but I'm bored

wtf I love ghostbusters now

Listen, I actually watched it yesterday and honestly I feel like it stood up.

However, it's mediocre at best. It won't be remembered for being good. It won't be remembered for being bad. It'll be forgotten for being stupidly mediocre. It got few laughs and otherwise was cringe worthy but it was still watchable. It's atleast a 4 or a 5 out of 10

pretty much this basically.

There's not much in this film to stand the test of time other than it's unprecedented reputation before its release. Or the fact that it'll set up a huge fucking franchise in the future in which women main leads are shoved in your faces now
