They've seized control of much of the outer rim- think of Gestapos of the Galaxy- they patrol the region and basically kill people who are against them. Pretty decent threat to the galaxy, but not so authoritarian like the Empire. Hence why its stylized as a "galactic junta"

IT was watchable because of Tim Curry and because most people have seen it when they were kids and are nostalgic about it. A doubt a remake could work, especially when everybody already knows about the ending. Might watch if trailers look good though.
