how far can i suspend my disbelief

As a homicide detective, obviously you're not going to get many opportunities to actually view the crime occurring. Generally you just see the aftermath. It's not too much of a stretch to believe that a video tape of a little girl presumably being raped and mutilated would at least momentarily bother him, especially since he's a father.

then why did he raise a daughter who gets gangbanged by the highschool football team

that happens to every normal, attractive daughter

It wasn't simply that he was seeing a child being raped. It was also the realisation that it wasn't just one dude responsible for it that he killed years ago, but a whole group of people that were allowed to go unpunished.

>throws a temper tantrum over viewing child rape

What makes you think that's all it was?

The beauty of not showing what was on the tape is it allows the viewer's mind to go to darker places than even HBO could get away with. Marty Hart was in fucking homicide, so whatever it was that was on that tape had to have been truly gnarly shit.

Doesn't he end up retiring after seeing a baby microwaved?

Ritual molestation and sacrifice of a child.
