Is Green Day punk?
Why so?
Is OpIvy the only good ska punk?
Just HOW crazy was HR? On a scale of 1 to crazy
What's your favourite The Ex album and why?
is liking dead kennedys a meme?
redpill me on crust punk with cello stuff. what the fuck is dbeat and what's crust and what's the difference?
>when your cat has better hygiene than you
Yes actually. Few know this
Nausea did a ska section that is the best ever. It's at the end
youtube.com
The only other good ska punk is certain tracks by Leftover Crack and Choking Victim
He's certified babe
The one EP collection with Weapons for El Salvador because it's their only good song
Yes, they're not as good as people think, Jello is just a master entertainer. Surf guitar work is neat but lumping them in with 80s hardcore is especially lol worthy, they were far from hardcore. Art school entryism
what are the top 5 punk records of all time
is industrial punk
is the austin scene today any good
what is the crustiest punk record
are crusties self aware
did metal or punk come first
is image important to punk
is punk dead
>what are the top 5 punk records of all time
personal favorites for personal reasons but the genre is too diverse and these mean nothing
Discharge - Hear nothing, see nothing, say nothing
Amebix - Monolith
Leatherface - Mush
The Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F.
Operation Ivy - Energy
>is industrial punk
There is crossover, but Industrial is more like electronic with a metal/punk attitude. Was Throbbing Gristle punk? I don't think so. Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat did something with the ministry guy once
>is the austin scene today any good
I think Metal when I think Austin but I don't know. I guess I don't know everything
>what is the crustiest punk record
Crust descends into white noise cassette tapes. It's hard to say. Cartoon Crust like choking victimis ridiculous. Japanese shit like Framtid is very very serious and nearly unlistenable. Amebix is a happy median

>are crusties self aware
The real crusties who ride trains and shoot heroin are borderline retarded and seem aware they are worthless and on their way to early death. The middle class surbuban larpers are not self aware. Basically NPR listeners on steroids. Anarchy is a joke imho
>did metal or punk come first
I'm thinking The Stooges vs Sabbath so Punk did. But I'm talking out of my ass
Velvet Underground vs Hawkwind?
>is image important to punk
Image is basically the whole appeal
>is punk dead
Crass declared it dead in 1978 and I'm inclined to agree
" just another fashion like hippie used to be"
What are the most definitive lines you can draw between Hardcore, Post-hardcore, and pop punk?
>What are the most definitive lines you can draw between Hardcore, Post-hardcore, and pop punk?
The hardest question ever
Hardcore vs Punk
The first question here is the difference between hardcore punk and capital H Hardcore
Hardcore punk is punk rock minus the frills, physically and sonically, with intensity increased in place of it. Less guitar wanking, faster, louder, meaner. More shaved heads, less fashion, less musicianship. Minor threat vs GBH is a good distinction.
But UK82 subgenre throws that american analysis in the toilet, because Discharge and Exploited got really loud around the same time, but were totally different from minor threat.
So the answer is... uhh
Capital H Hardcore is distinct from punk rock. I grew up in a Hardcore scene. Lots of beatdown bands. Hardcore lyrics are rarely as political as hardcore punk, and much more about strength, betrayal, and all that secretly emo shit. All their dads are alcoholics
Post-hardcore
Quicksand is my definition of post hardcore. Some people equate emocore with it but I don't. I see the skramz thing as something else entirely. And now it seems like people think Saosin is post-hardcore, which I don't agree with.
youtube.com
The difference between Quicksand and other 90s metal/hardcore crossover groups is they sing roughly in tune with metallica vox
And here's a hardcore pop-punk posthardcore band that isn't punk at all
youtube.com
Pop punk is easy.
Crimpshrine was the bleeding edge between punk rock and pop punk. Green Day started in the same scene, and jumped the fence.
Crimpshrine, 1988. Still punk
youtube.com
Green Day 1990, officially Pop punk

Whats the closest thing to early punk these days? I mean, without it necessary being punk, what bands do you think have the same vibe or energy that the first punk acts had
If a guy with not to much knowledge about music but certainly dedicates big time to music, what album, song whatever would you reccomend?
The Minor thread part of the BYO SSD F.O.D. show was bootlegged by Lost and Found
Do you know if there are recordings of SSD and FOD from the same show?
Is this band the first punk band
youtube.com
Is post-punk punk
Who invented punk
Who invented post-punk
Chinkees
>Whats the closest thing to early punk these days? I mean, without it necessary being punk, what bands do you think have the same vibe or energy that the first punk acts had
I don't really follow new music enough to answer, sorry. But read Please Kill Me if you want to know what the American punk thing leading up to the 80s was like. That'll give you an idea (more art and drugs, less politics)
>If a guy with not to much knowledge about music but certainly dedicates big time to music, what album, song whatever would you reccomend?
Chronologically to the development of modern punk
1. Velvet Underground (YES IM SERIOUS) - The Velvet Underground & Nico [1967]

2. The Heartbreakers - L.A.M.F (1977)
youtube.com
3. Wire - Pink Flag (1977)

4. Crass - The Feeding of the 5000 (1978)

5. Discharge - Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing (1982)

6. (US hardcore punk happens in the mid-'80s. Black Flag, Minor Threat, etc. Into it, over it)
7. Operation Ivy - Energy (1989)

8. Dystopia - Human = Garbage EP (1994)

9. Propagandhi

>The Minor thread part of the BYO SSD F.O.D. show was bootlegged by Lost and Found

Hunting for obscure live performances of SSD?
You have gone too far, turn back!
>Is post-punk punk
It's art students sucking the punk out of punk
>Who invented punk
Richard Hell invented the aesthetic. He was fucking rich models and doing heroin while his clothing rotted off of his body. Malcolm McLaren got a boner from looking at him and took the obsession back to the UK where he made 4 twink street urchins come into his bondage shop and form a boy band
>Who invented post-punk
That dead whiny guy from New Order
There's nothing punk about this
How old are you?
I'm not really interested in the SSD part. more Flag of Democracy since it was their first show and they were like 14 and trying to outspeed Gang Green (which they did if you listen to the Chinese Food demo from 82)
I wonder if Ian MacKaye has those recordings in his punk vault
I've been looking for them for years
I don't know why people ruin themselves with corny ebin band tattoos, they're going to age like shit and regret it when they inevitably grow up.
>crust punks
>ever growing up
jej
In your opinion, when exactly did proto-punk end and punk begin?
Would you agree that what's considered proto-punk and what's considered post-punk stylistically similar in alot of ways? If so, why do you think so?
I believe that no-wave gives all of the other sub-genres of punk a run for it's money. What do you think of that scene?
>It's art students sucking the punk out of punk
What is your definition of punk.
>That dead whiny guy from New Order
Wrong. Pere Ubu did.

>I'm not really interested in the SSD part. more Flag of Democracy since it was their first show and they were like 14 and trying to outspeed Gang Green (which they did if you listen to the Chinese Food demo from 82)

You have gone deeper than I have, but I hope you can find it. You might want to try tracking them down online and asking them if it was recorded.
yeah a lot of them plan on dying in a gutter and/or never never having a real job. He might just end up truly homeless one day. They don't care.
I knew a bartender who was 40 and used to be a crusty train hopper. He completely rejected punk rock. Survived with only hand tattoos to show for it and all those wasted years
Can you digress on why Green Day is Punk? Just wanna hear your thoughts
Any thoughts on skinhead Oi!?
It's my personal favorite subgenre along with Anarcho/Crust Punk even though both occupy entirely different ends of the political spectrum.
The Crack, Cock Sparrer and Cockney Rejects are my personal favorites.
>he doesn't think OpIvy is good
It's a b8 thread guys
>In your opinion, when exactly did proto-punk end and punk begin?
All my opinions come from Please Kill Me on that topic. I'd say Stooges were legit punk rock based on Iggy's stage behavior and the apolitical nature of most of the NYC punk rock from Johnny Thunders and co. But people disagree and I get that. UK punkers made it political which is good and bad. So by that definition it was McLaren again, when he made the NY Dolls pretend they were communists to piss people off... then rolled home to make Sex Pistols and set it off
> What is your definition of punk
That was me (OP) who wrote that. I'm just trying to antagonize nerds
>Wrong. Pere Ubu did.
Found one!
>It's art students sucking the punk out of punk
Even The Cure or Siouxsie and the Banshees?
Why is Riot Grrrl such hot garbage? One of the worst movements to emerge from Hardcore.
>It's a b8 thread guys
OP here, Operation Ivy is the REASON I got into punk. He said "Is OpIvy the only good ska punk?"
LoC and that one Nausea song are the only other people who did punk and ska well together
>Any thoughts on skinhead Oi!?
I like Oi a lot too, but don't know enough of it. I like The Business (if you count them) and The Anti-Heros the most. ROCK AGAINST COMMUNISM BROTHER!!!
there's no such thing as british punk. new wave or pop punk(pop punk isn't punk, it's bad alt rock/boring pop music)
>Why is Riot Grrrl such hot garbage? One of the worst movements to emerge from Hardcore.
Because punk rock always included girls and was "feminist", while Riot Grrrl is academic entryism poser shit from hipster college 90s girls. Fuck Bikini Kill. Watch the documentary about her lyme disease she's an egomaniac and not punk at all
lyrics.wikia.com
the Cure demos sound like a Buzzcocks cover band
They developed their own style when Robert Smith realized people dig his whining
Yeah, The Business is quintessential Oi! along with Cock Sparrer.
By the way, have you heard of Vegan Reich? They were the first Hardline band which went even further than straight edge. They were militantly vegan and opposed to caffeine, porn, homosexuality and casual sex (including masturbation).
Politics notwithstanding, Vegan Reich was a good band:

>there's no such thing as british punk. new wave or pop punk(pop punk isn't punk, it's bad alt rock/boring pop music)
Oi, say that to me face bruv I'll mash your gob in I right well will, swear on me mum's
>By the way, have you heard of Vegan Reich? They were the first Hardline band which went even further than straight edge. They were militantly vegan and opposed to caffeine, porn, homosexuality and casual sex (including masturbation).
YES vegan reich is something I bring up a lot for some reason lol. I never enjoyed them that much because Earth Crisis was always there to listen to instead and I loved them
Did you read Evasion from crimethinc? Extremist vegan hardcore sxe is a big factor in that book
I always hated her intensely. You know you're dealing with someone truly despicable when you find yourself rooting for Courtney Love of all people.
About the only bands I liked from that movement are Babes in Toyland and 7 Year Bitch.
>By the way, have you heard of Vegan Reich? They were the first Hardline band which went even further than straight edge. They were militantly vegan and opposed to caffeine, porn, homosexuality and casual sex (including masturbation).
PS. do you like Good Clean Fun? lol
Who is your favorite modern hardcore band?
Along with Riot Grrrl, there was another movement called Queercore. How does this shape up in terms of punk music? Was it even necessary?
Yeah there are so many great punk bands fronted by women. The entire genre is non-punk suburban girls who don't even do heroin pretending they're down
Female in this pick is
10% sexy and I want to fuck
10% repulsive and turning me off
10% sexy because she turns me off
70% ugly beyond I want to fuck because ugly.
>Who is your favorite modern hardcore band?
My era of modern hardcore was during the metalcore era so Converge, Coalesce, Burnt By The Sun (EPs only)
For tough-guy stuff Throwdown (Keith on vocals), Terror, The Hoods, The Killer, C.D.C. etc. All that stupid mush music
>Along with Riot Grrrl, there was another movement called Queercore. How does this shape up in terms of punk music? Was it even necessary?
I never listened because the bands all have gimmick names like Gayrilla Biscuits and Black Fag. And, again, there were already lots of gay dudes in punk rock
punk threads on mu continue to be bad
the austin scene is tight as hell rn. big guys like institute, glue, etc, new bands like nosferatu and skeleton
this thread is autistic as fuck
you are a scenester. tight as hell punk rock ya'll. have you ever even been in a fight?
>this thread is autistic as fuck
Most people involved in punk rock beyond their teenage years have mental health issues. It's just how it is
Is there a comprehensive punk MEGA file?
glue is complete shit. college trust fund fuck playing dressup
What do you think of the Reatards?
What's your opinion about the greatest punk band ever? And yes that includes ALL of course.
ah yes i too prefer indie rock and rap!
I agree about Austin. I come in these threads and shill the 2012 Glue demo whenever I'm drinking. Fucking fun riffs. Checking out the other bands you mentioned now. Looks like the Nosferatu has played with some Greensboro bands I have a friend in, like Bad Eric and Wriggle. Skeleton is pretty tight. I'm really digging the Strutter 7" these days.
youtube.com
Do you prefer bands that lead more authentic skinhead lifestyles or what? There's nothing more autistic at hardcore shows than the dude that shows up in his suspenders and stompin boots and takes it all seriously. There's nothing wrong with thinking a certain style of music is fun and playing it without buying into the lifestyle or fashion that's commonly associated with it.
1. What hardcore scene did you grow up in, if you don't mind me asking?
2. Any reason why Denver has a shit ton of homeless crusty kids around, or is it just because of the legal weed?
3. What age did people typically start getting sick of punk/hardcore, from your experiences?
I prefer bands that look like at least one of them could hold their own in a fight. I don't like hardcore.
what are the best punk albums about being a fucking idiot
is the best punk band of all time green day or blink 182?
What pisses you off the most about the punk/hardcore scene today?
Not sure how seriously I can take the musical opinions of somebody who bases their preferences (even if only partially) on the physical appearance of the artists.
Also
>2017
>not liking hardcore
Are left leaning skinheads still around?
I just don't like hardcore. What's wrong with that?
I was just meme'n on you with that last part. Nothing wrong with it
What do you think of southern punk over the past 20 years?
OP again
>What do you think of the Reatards?
110%
I really didn't like anything besides the stuff found on "Two things at once" - I wanted to, but I didn't. Except for My World. I have everything sucks but don't like it
1. PAHC bro
2. Is the weather good enough to sleep outdoors? That's probably why, along with generous liberals handing out money
3. 21, hopefully
That I spent 10 years on it
He's write about these lameo "punk" bands hoping to land that sweet pitchfork review and a contract with Merge
I honestly haven't seen a skinhead at a show since 1999. The nazis used to come fight the hardcore kids, lol. Never once met S.H.A.R.P.
ofc I haven't been to a show in 5 years
You heard the Persuaders?
No but I'll check them out. I really like the Exploding Hearts and this king louie guy sounds cool
You at all into Food Fortunata or any of his zany projects (Sockeye, Fossil Fuel, Breathilizör)?
Not sure. I don't feel like there's been many scenes where it's easy to recognize where the bands are from just by how they sound, at least not for the past 15 years or so. The ease of sharing music through the internet has made it so that, within your favorite style of hardcore or whatever, your favorite bands can be from different corners of the country and all sound alike because they all listen to the same stuff.
Here's one of my favorites from them youtube.com
Not OP but Sockeye rules
>You at all into Food Fortunata or any of his zany projects (Sockeye, Fossil Fuel, Breathilizör)?
wtwf is this lol. Breathilizör on youtube right now this is really funny
I think I came across this once digging into Reatard's back catalog. Now I'm on screaming apple records page feeling baffled. Good stuff
Here's some shit for no reason

Has anyone ever gone through the Billy Childish discography and picked the 50 or so good songs out ?
Do you know Gary Wrong? He makes great shit.
>Do you know Gary Wrong? He makes great shit.
No, link it up babe
hell of a time finding this sockeye shit since they have no www
Here ya go youtube.com

That Loose Diamonds record is so damn good. Had no idea this band played their songs. Don't really like their cover but still cool people are playing his stuff

have you ever seen that interview with Nancy, Sid, and Stiv Bators??? i love that video
Does Wire have any good albums besides pink flag, chairs missing, and 154?
funny thing is they actually have no good albums
Lmao punk is fucking dead loser.
youre gonna be dead too if you dont shut your mouth...
DID THE MAN WHO INVENTED PUNK GO TO PUNK?
Overall would you consider Screeching Weasel punk or pop punk
xD
not him but they're objectively pop punk
AM I THE ONLY PERSON WHO LOVES LEFTOVER CRACK???!!
no theres plenty of edgy sjw fags who like them
I know... I am centrist right but I just love the nihilism the band portrays.
I've seen them a lot on this board
