It's a manga that's been running for 20+ years now, and it's pretty incredible. One of the things that's most interesting about it, is that the author has basically reinvented himself in his style several times throughout the series, while still keeping it true to its roots. During the first 10 volumes (referred to collectively as the "Golden Age" arc), it's basically gritty 80s style manga of purely dark medieval warfare, becoming borderlined historical fiction. but in volumes 11-12+ literally hell opens up and pours itself onto earth evil dead style but in a completely serious manner. Over the next ~5 volumes you have every bit of bad in his world corrupted and risen to full blown demonic rape-fests; corrupt priests burning everyone at the stake, packs of roving goblins kidnapping women, raping and impregnating them to make more monsters, an evil god-emporer who tries to take over the world etc. It then turns into a traditional swords/sorcery fantasy where Guts assembles a team of rag-tag heroes to destroy the five God Hands of hell, one of whom was his best friend and rival during the Golden Age.

I really really need to read all this shit one day...
I never really watch or go crazy about this Anime stuff.
Haven't since I was young watching Dragon Ball Z and random episodes of Gundam. Then quickly grew out of it and moved on.
But a few months ago I decided to watch the original anime and I got really into it.
The end of it though....just fucking blew my mind. So many dead and the betrayal of everyone just to fulfill a dream at any cost. I feel like I can see where Griffith(sp?) is coming from. I feel bad for him, kind of am ok with what he did, but still want to see what happens...
How long would it take to read through this?

Glad to hear it helped, I'm sure you won't have any problems, just stay cool.
Been training slayer, killing a bunch of stuff, getting money, using that to get better gear.
I've seen addicts blaze though it in 3 days, but a reasonable estimate is maybe a week to a month, depending on how much you read. There's about 370 chapters.
If you get really into it, might go by very quickly, but you also might want it to last longer, so you read less at a time.
If you felt the anime that much, it shouldn't feel like a huge commitment to read it.
I'm always cautious of watching shows over 100 episodes long, but if I get into it, I'd wish it was much more.
