Because there's a lot more focus on music in school in the Nordic countries than in the rest of the world.
So we end up with an disproportionate amount of musicians, some of them turn to metal, which is basically a Nordic musical genre. Since it's a Nordic genre, it makes sense we have way more of it than the rest of the world.
Also, a high income, means a lot of families can afford to buy instruments to their kids at a young age, which also makes it easier to become a musician.
Small towns, and decentralization makes it simple to find places to practice. Also, shitloads of bomb shelters everywhere, which makes perfect discrete locations for practicing with a band without pissing off neighbors.
Sweden makes a lot of good music, in all genres, including metal. Power metal is what you'll most likely find here.
Finland is great at folk metal. They're basically the best.
Norway has a lot of quantity, but not as great quality as Sweden and Finland. We basically focus on black metal.

the whole screaming and smashing on guitars is more of an anglo approach to metal, which is why metal is viewed as kind of trashy by you guys.
Nordic metal is more related to classical music, for the most part. The best bands, are fucking musical geniuses. They could probably excel in any genre, but since GOOD metal takes a lot of insane skills, they chose the hardest genre.
Anglos tend to pick power metal, which really is the simplest form of metal.

It can be decent, but it's overall trash. Sabaton is more of a guilty pleasure for me.
But then there's symphonic black metal, which takes more skill, and is harder to listen to, as you need to concentrate to like it.

But my favorite genre is the Finnish folk metal. Takes a shitload of skill to pull off, and switches between soft and hard many times during each piece. It's not something you listen to with friends, or put on a party. More like if you want to relax, or have a long drive and need to zone out. Great music, both as a background if you're working, or to listen closely to while doing something not requiring concentration, like driving. Finnish folk metal really is the ultimate genre:

Britain dominated the early days. USA dominated the 80s to early 90s. Scandinavia dominated mid 90s to present, but metal was pretty much dead in the mainstream since then.

Nightwish was the start of me finding my own tastes in music and got me into power metal and subsequently progressive. There's somewhat of a disdain for them in metal circles since they have more popular appeal
