This thread is for the discussion of the language, culture, travel, daily life, etc. of Japan. Let's tark at randam in Japanese and English. Take it easy!
Hello. I'm seriously considering changing my major (if that's what you call it, i'm doing a bachelor) from history (which I have one finished semester from, I failed this one due to a series of unfortunate events) to Japanese.
I want to study abroad. I am a weeb. If I go to Japan that means I can delve deeper into my hobbies (I could go to Akiba and finally go party at Mogra for anison matrix) while kinda getting an education.
I am a gentooman, I could easily get a couple of certs while also getting a education, and then people see that I followed through on the whole college meme.
How fucked up is this plan? I'm not exactly in a hurry because supposedly I was conscripted and I have to do a year of military service starting in August...

I don't know if Japanese is a great major to choose but studying abroad would probably be a fun (or at least a memorable) experience so I say go for it. Just make sure you do some research and figure out what you're getting into before you go.
Dane's situation is completely different from this user's, plus he's not even working at a farm right now.

That's pretty cool. I've personally considered this working visa thing myself, but I legitimately have autism (just aspergers, I'm officially not retarded with a 111 IQ) and working is a drag. I'd prefer to study.
Pseudo-criminal as in it never actually got on my official record but it was written down places so the army might find out, I've already had several other visas in the developed world :)

Also VERY important question: can you buy snus in Japan?
John Adams
In case people are not familiar with snus here, it's a type of tobacco that looks like this, or like a brown moist dirt like substance

Japan isn't a good country for studying anything if you are coming from the first world. I think you should stick to history... knowing history is more helpful in socialising than knowing some foreign language that is spoken in a limited area of the world.

Yeah well history is kind of a drag and I don't really want to be a teacher, considering actually getting a job in IT. The sysadmin life is the life for me. I might just be thinking this because I'm going through a rough patch of several unfortunate events, but my passions are computers (free software and infosec) and "otaku culture". Also, living in a city with literally over two times as many people as my entire country could be nice.
Feel free, I have done several things in the past but never got anything permanently on my record. I could apply to the police academy if I wanted. I'm a model citizen, on the outside.
What is your living conditions like? If you just had that much for RENT you could probably get a hole in the wall somewhere in Oslo. I really envy the Japanese housing market. I read an article about it and supposedly there's not as much zoning regulations and not much stopping people from building new things in Tokyo? Is this true? Here it's a bitch to get anything built, and the government subsidizes loans so that people can speculate in housing prices.

免疫学、材料科学、化学、物理学、生物学・生化学、植物・動物学、分子生物学などでは日本は世界的に高いレベル。ただし日本語が必要。 Immunology, materials science, chemistry, physics, biology / biochemistry, plant and zoology, molecular biology in Japanese university are high level in the world. But you need skill of Japanese language.
Chase Nelson
I made no reference to job opportunities though. If you have a right contact, you can still get a high paying job.
Jose Watson
Yeah but I also have mild IT competence, which has been growing lately. I've been using GNU+Linux for the last four years, and lately my interests for how it all works has been growing. I don't think I'd have problems getting a job as a sysadmin or, if god wills it, IT consultant, so job isn't really my biggest fear.
I think it's useful for many people to take a year break and see different parts of the world in their early twenties. But it should be mixed with their career designs.

Rent isn't included in the 30,000 yen I mentioned. The average household income in the richest ward in Tokyo is approximately 15,000,000 yen p.a. It's not laws and regulations that are stopping people building new houses in Tokyo.

So are Japanese people as anal about drugs as I've heard? Will people really go out of their way to have you arrested if they think you're doing drugs? How "bad" (or "good" if that's your point of view) is it?
Is it because of the whole post-WW2 amphetamine use thing? Is it because China got royally buttfucked by the whole "opium" thing?
It's a result of combined factors. One of them is drug dealing has long been a major source of income for yakuza organisation.
Dylan Diaz
What a shame I'm intent on going next spring. I may end up in a business minor / Japanese major however, as I'm told Business majors get you nowhere and I'm not sure of a specific business to study.
What did you study?
Bentley Gonzalez
Are the yakuza really bad guys? Are they white-collar guys who just do really shady loans, kingpins who sell drugs, or just street scumbags who pimp out whores? What are the Yakuza?

Yeah, their businesses are more sophisticated than they used to be. They are bad guys for sure but they'd do no harm to commoners as long as they don't do drugs.
Anthony Cook
Do they do like shootouts or something often? Is it just plain tax evasion and stuff like that? Do they do bank heists? What is it that they do that makes them bad?
You seem like you know barely anything about Japan. You should really do a high level of research about what it's really like, for Japanese and foreigners before you seriously consider going.
Austin Wilson
> but they'd do no harm to commoners as long as they don't do drugs. They harm commoners. If you run resteaurant or likes, they'd visit you and ask you to pay protection fee. Those who refuse to pay the fee get beaten up so badly or stabbed on streets. These are more usual in Kyushu. Yakuza has thrown grenades to a pub there.
>shootouts Only in certain areas. Mostly in Fukuoka and Osaka. >tax evasion Everyone evades tax one way or another. >bank heists I don't remember last time bank robbery being reported on the news.
Why yakuza is bad? Because of their Korean connection.
Brandon Price
I know next to nothing, I just like the whole anime/otaku thing. I've heard of Yakuza before though, and I'm kind of curious. Either way, if I were to start studying it, a bachelor at the university of Oslo starts with a year of studies about Japan and learning the language, and then a year of studying abroad (I think they got a deal with Tokyo university or something, but I'm not sure), so I wouldn't just hop on a plane to go there for anything but a vacation anytime soon. I'm probably going to do a year in the army anyway, so it's not like I'm in a rush, just kinda curious.
