Ask a beer sales rep anything

>Also general beer thread
> Yay beer!

Fellow CA craft beer fan here. Love elysian.

Why do you think so many micro breweries focus on IPA?

In college currently. Did you go to college? Marketing major? Is that a good job (Pay, enjoyment, etc)?

Why do most big grocery stores overstock their shelves with craft beer? It's so common to see 3-9month old IPA room temp just chilling there with dust gathering on it. Yesterday I saw a Stone Enjoy By 07-04-16 six pack still for sale. Ain't nobody who knows IPAs are gonna by that old stuff.

Popular and boozy. Generally favorable for men and women. A lot of girls don't like the stouts/belgians/etc. Because of the amount of hop variety they're easy to makephalos unique.

BS in business. Though you don't need a degree. Generally if you're young and inexperienced merchandising is the entry level gig. With my degree I bypassed that.

I make 60-80k a year depending on incentives and how my sales are. I love my job and it's pretty fun and rowdy bunch I work with.

Also yes. I get all the free beer I want. Between samples and dump beer I have cases upon cases

The markets saturated. Grocery resets in my territory are scheduled in spring. Remember the beer vendors write the shelf sets (AB does Safeway where I am and Miller does Kroger chains). This year their 86ing a lot of the craft and moving back to domestic.

How do I go about getting a job like that. From San Diego originally so no shortage of craft breweries.

OP here. I was born and raised in SD. Coronado Brewing over in Baypark was my go to. Work in Seattle now.

Same thing with an almost overabundance of craft here. Established markets for craft are about to burst.

I see. So it's safe to assume they took a sizable loss trying to cater to the whole craft beer scene then huh? I usually stick to local gas stations that have a smaller but fresher rotation. Just breaks my heart seeing all that good beer go old and stale.

Ya. Even C stores have the same problem. A thing people don't realize is beer reps have incentives and programs to get new beer in (I.E. BLUE MOON HORCHATA CUTTLEFISH FLAVOR) they get the placement and the beer just rots and the rep gets paid.

I'm not a piece of shit and really try not to do that. I always exchange my OOC beer and rotate my seasonals and LE beers to get the new stuff in.

A little bit of planning and knowing my market goes a long way not to fuck over my customers.

Also 80% of my volume is selling Malt Liquor and Ice Beer in the hood. Never a dull a moment.

What is the most irritating thing about your job would you say?

That's dope. City Heights Sup Forumsro here, in Denver now. In school but looking to get in to the industry. What exactly is your job? Opinion on Blue Moon?

Ummmmm.... Not much. I really do love what I do.

Sometimes my paycheck relies on me selling things that don't move and I have to send something even though I know they have 5 of the same item in the back.

Luckily my company is aware and they tweak how we get my paycheck.

I have been in some shady shit though. Robberies, tweakers, had a guy come in and smash up a gas station with a sledgehammer because he got fired while I was standing there.

Typical hood shit.

Blue Moon is poison.

Look at merch gigs and relief rep positons. TAM and BAM accounts aren't bad entry level jobs. Don't feel like an asshole for working for Miller or AB. The companies love beer, and honestly both companies support and do amazing things for the breweries they aquire.... like provide them nationwide distribution and resources (i.e. Ballast, Elysian, 10 Barrel, Lagunitas, Goose, ETC)

The brewers that talk shit are the ones who's beer isn't good enough to get bought out.

So basically I rotate between C Stores and Grocery as relief. Do team sells, vacation coverage, etc. I don't like working on-premise (bars and restaurants... too much drama).

The most simple thing I do is go count and inventory and order accordingly. My job is pretty much based on volume so selling in displays (like you see at grocery stores) is the actual big part of what I do. For C Stores it's buy ins and getting new placements in the door.

Also last thing. Im vacuuming as I check the thread. PB/Clairemont douche here.

Cheers m8

Have you had any of Fremont's Barrel Aged Stouts? Can you get me some?

I dont do Fremont. I can get you all the Bourbon County you want though. Have a case at home.

How about Rum Barrel or Bourbon Barrel Aged TenFidy?

Funny SD story. I won the lottery and went to High Tech High. I was in class one day and saw some of the weebs looking at Sup Forums. Asked them wtf the fuck they were looking at and they showed me before calling me a normie and rubbing their crotches to loli porn under the desk.

This was in 2005 and I've been here ever since.

Oskar isn't really up in WA. Cask shit like that maybe a 1/6bb or two will show up but its gone in a night.

Are there any Treehouse/Trilium Style hazy east coast Dry Hopped IPAS that you sell?

Even I'm that much of a beerfag. No we don't have anything like that. 80% of what I sell is malt liquor and Ice beer.

what is the worst beer you've ever personally tried?

cheapest way to source individual sixtels for my kegerator?

From my portfolio? Kona Wailua Wheat. I would never talk bad about any of my brands but man that stuff is funky.

Probably make friends with a manager at a local Bevmo or Total Wine. Like for keg 2 go near college campuses too. It will blow your mind how much beer those kids drink. They are already making a fortune on Busch and PBR they might not mark up a quick 1/6bb of something fancy especially if youre cool. Because the college Keg shops are some of the highest volume accounts out there they usually get dibs on the LE and fancy stuff

thanks

What do you think of Ale Asylum's hoppalicious?
