The plan was to make the darkness to the show a complete surprise. Like it starts out as a mostly light hearted silly show and ends season 1 making you question whether Bojack can ever be saved, or if he even deserves redemption at all.

You're right. On the night of the incident Bojack was even trying hard to get Todd and the girl together, having gotten them a private hotel room on his dime and wingmanning. On top of that, Bojack's funding and house actually made Todd successful (which I think pretty much makes up for the season 1 rock opera). This was the point in the show where Todd was most indebted to Bojack, and still he gets played off as righteous with this speech. Pretty silly.
Season 1 is actually the weakest.
