I think ever since he's sobered up he hasn't really been as good. Gummo is his masterpiece, though I can see why people would take issue with it. There's a sort of leering, freak-show vibe to the way he approaches some of his subjects, and while I think he's a sincere guy I also don't think he's as empathetic as he'd have you believe. Good filmmaker, but doesn't really have a lot to say imo.
