Is it a sport?

In France it's a thing.
The Vendée Globe challenge started last sunday, do you even know this race?

Of course. Lifelong sailor here. Sailing is one of the best and at the same time most underrated sports IMO.

those kinds of contests are interesting

found out about this guy when reading about the history of them

fascinating

There are German sailors? Knowing your seas, you're courageaous!
I leave the link here if you want to follow the ranking of the race:

Click on "menu" then 'classements et positions".

Of course, Germany has a long tradition of sailing, we have the North Sea and Baltic Sea and a lot of lakes.

Had to do a presentation about vendeeglobe and, Volvo Ocean race and round the world racing in general at university a couple of years ago :-)

>we have the North Sea and Baltic Sea
Yeah, cold and treacherous. Your fishermen have some big balls.

Hanging on the edge of that boat like that is pretty fucking ballsy.

North Sea agree, Baltic Sea is more like a bathtub. But Biscaya is also far from easy too sail!

First of all it's fun :-)

There's an awesome book called 'The Strange Voyage of Donald Crowhurst" and a documentary called "Deep Water." Both absolutely enthralling.

Pro yacht crew here: I've sailed a few times with Conrad Colman, those single handed sailors are a breed apart, that's for sure.

Dude I can't deal with the open water, that's why I like all my sports on land

I love sailing but its not a sport

it's much more of a sport than car racing ever will be

>en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Crowhurst

Wow, this race was an extreme experience, between him and Moitessier...

What else? Are you even serious?

I dont think car racing is a sport either

My boss, Larry Ellison, is a competitive sailor but not sure this type

They are alone to manoeuvre these beasts 24/7 during 100 days without support, physically speaking it's an exploit I think. Compared to golf...

Well, there's the America Cup here

America's Cup is sci-fi tier nowadays. Still a sport though.

It's a lot more physically demanding than golf/darts/bowling.

Cool. Not a sport. Neither is mountain climbing or body building or 1000 other impressive acts of physicality

Giving birth is too

It's only not a sport if you're a poorfag. A day's racing in Antigua followed by all night parties on the boss's superyacht is fucking based.

why are they allowing them crazy hidrofoil now? or i missed something

What is a sport

is a yot an athlete?

It's allowed, there's no rule against it.
It's the first time they are used on a round-the-world tour though, and they're fragile, if you hit a floating coconut you can be fucked.

It's a mechanical sport.
To me, if it requires physical aptitudes and if your performance can be objectively mesured through a competition, it's a sport.

yes

Sorry we ruined the America's Cup with the meme boats.
