So he was dead all along?

It makes as much sense as the opening scene of Citizen Kane.

No, he wasn't dead all along. He was dreaming/hallucinating between when he was injured and when he dies.

How does the drug stuff with his squad makes any sense if he never gets to know this? He died after all

It would obviously mean that there never was any drug at all and that he was just dreaming butthurt over getting tk'd .

he was cleaning windows and fell off jacob's ladder and hit his head. the movie was his hallucination.

He wasn't dead all along. Jacob Singer is mortally wounded at the start during tests of an experimental drug program ran by the government during Vietnam. Before he dies we share his confused drug induced state as he tries to piece together just what has happened to him and the rest of his squad. He experiences hallucinations of demons and of a city which feels like Hell until he eventually realizes and accepts what has happened to him. There is nothing spiritual about the movie at all, it's simply the drugs that are fucking his dying mind. It's a pretty bleak film really.

Isn't a dude supposed to be going between the dead & the alive back and forth.

No. He was slowly dying while at the same time being poisoned by hallucinogenic, weaponized narcotics. Some have speculated that he may have been drifting in and out of purgatory, but that is not actually what happens, although it is easy to come to that conclusion given the satanic/judeo christian imagery: angels/demons which all stems from his own beliefs.

>There is nothing spiritual about the movie at all, it's simply the drugs that are fucking his dying mind.

Just going to point out his dog tags state "Jewish"

Isn't the whole thing explained when is chiropractor talks about demons actually being angels?

He's hallucinating that he got back from the war and is continuing his life and that demons are haunting him. He resists them so the torment continues until he gives in and finally dies?

Original ending.

>"Eckhart saw Hell too. He said: The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you, he said. They're freeing your soul. So the way he sees it, if you're frightened of dying and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth. It's just a matter of how you look at it, that's all."

Durr... really Sup Forumstard?. Sheeet, does that means we can't watch a film that has a Jewish character in it? The main characters name is Jacob Singer you twat, you don't get more Jewish than that. Now fuck off back to the fatherland you cunt and take your inbred redneck mongoloid family with you.

name a more pointless movie

You are the reason why I posted that. Anyways, I'm sure there's a thread where I can rage in for normies stealing our memes while I also watch another thread where we laugh about people bitching elsewhere about cultural appropriation

Demons are trying to steal his soul (or he's just lost, not much of a difference) as it's departing from his body, if you want to take it literally.

But it's a movie and as such you should derive non-literal meaning from the story if you want to 'understand' it.

>There is nothing spiritual about the movie at all

No, the vietnam war and drug program are the background that sets up Jacob's predicament. Really he's just facing the brink of his own hell. The entire plot is him making peace with himself so he can finally confront his own death. To say that isn't spiritual is a farce. I mean, there's an undeniable spiritual inspiration to the film.

"Eckhart saw Hell too. He said: The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of life, your memories, your attachments. They burn them all away. But they're not punishing you, he said. They're freeing your soul. So the way he sees it, if you're frightened of dying and... and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace, then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth. It's just a matter of how you look at it, that's all. So don't worry, okay? Okay?"

This. Did OP even watch the movie?

spotted the chad/underage

It could really be either or. He's dying, yea, but he's at the same time facing a profound existential crisis of a spiritual nature. It's not as though he's awake through the entirety of it. He's in his own inner world. The way he wants to imagine it, but gradually chipped away by his inner demons. The fact that the end returns to him dying on his cot doesn't necessarily mean that it was all just a hallucination. He went through a genuine period of soul-searching. That's what the entire movie was about. Him coming to terms with his own inner crises before death itself. .

Please both of you fuck off. Christ. We can't actually discuss a film when threads always diverge on your petty political squabbling.

Can anyone recommend more esoteric films?

If you'e into films like this, the genre is called 'rubber reality'. But if you're into 'esoteric', I can't off the top of my head recommend anything beyond Eyes Wide Shut, which you probably already know about. Some other user could probably give a better recommendation.

Capeshit. Any of it.

He was dying and seeing hallucinations because of the drugs.

Or he was dead all along and was in pergatory and was finding the way to the after life.

Or he was in the present, and haunted by flash backs to Vietnam, chased by demons.

There's at least 3 different interpretations you can go with.

Yeah Eyes wide shut was pretty cool. Never heard of that genre before, thanks.

They flat out explained everything at the very end

It doesn't. 80% of the entire movie develops this "ladder" drug plot and then they pull the rug out from under your feet at the last minute and it's "i was dead the whole time".

Fans will bullshit you with "oh the references throughout the movie" completely ignoring the general plot the movie still goes by too. Fucking terrible movie.

Owl Creed'd!

You really think a non-jew could make a great movie like this?
Honestly?

>Eyes Wide Shut
That was shit compared to the original "Abre los Ojos".
