The overall general character of the show that implied there was a plan, the show was going somewhere, all the plotlines would converge and the resolution would be intensely amazing.

Jack was my most hated character but when he fell off the rails he became a million times more interesting

I think the island was always a metaphor for human character, with the good light energy keeping the darkness in check. All of the characters had potential to do good or terrible things, and found peace through togetherness and making sacrifices for each other.

It wasn't the only "plan" with the show, but it was the main one and was present from the beginning, with the light and dark theme and "live together or die alone."
