I bought a new HP laptop last December, running Windows 10. Have only downloaded two pictures and Firefox, bc IE Edge is really slow. Everything else, like if I need a word document I plug in a USB and save it on that.

Today I noticed I had only 300MB of 28GB left on my C Drive! So I ran malware bytes twice, no problems, and I also deleted temporary files. I was able to free up about 5GB, but it shouldn't be this full! I don't know what to do. I'm very worried, every time I refresh the my computer folder the space left goes down a few MB's.

What should I do?

windirstat.net to check what's taking up all the space. Disable hibernation using cmd. Cleanup temp files and check the box that says "cleanup system files". Probably got a few gigs of windows update files from aniversary update. Check all the boxes in that menu that pops up. Download less porn. If you got the hp x360 throw a class 10 SD card in the available slot, mount it and map your downloads and media directories there...

this and check em'

Cheers, user. Didn't know about the hibernation thing - cleared up almost 2 gigs right there! Bam!

Checking out windirstat rn... Already cleaned up temp files, but I'm just reading it's something I have to do regularly. Had 4gigs of those files.

I don't download porn on my laptop, I use my ipad :P

I got a gay ass HP stream, long story, I got it for free tho

also checked

Replace Windoze botnet with something else, say, Ubuntu or Mint.

Ah, it's already running much smoother! Thanks again user!

Remove current hdd replace with ssd reinstall windows use old hdd as external backup

What kind of laptop only has 28 gigs? Phones come with more disk space than that.

Windirstat

Man I tried Linux Mint in the past on an old laptop, was slow as hell. I tried lubuntu, also slow, i tried I think it's called, xbuntu? also slow.

Maybe it was just the laptop I was using, I actually accidentally deleted windows and wasn't on warranty, so I decided to try linux. In hindsight, maybe asus and acer aren't the best judge for the systems

But my overall complaint was that for some reason it wasn't using all the available space, it was running as if there was an alongside OS? I don't know if I'm describing it right, I tried fixing it myself but it just wasn't going. Ended up pirating an older copy of windows and was still slow until its death

My friend uses linux, uh... kerry? kelly? Something with a k, he says it's very fast but idk. maybe i'll wait til warranty runs out

I do really want to go back bc I do value my privacy online, but I'm worried about the whole issues above starting again

Shitty ultrabooks

but I got it for free :)
Plus I don't care, I have about 11K TB worth of of external drives and USBs.

My phone only has 8gigs. Motorolla, man. :V

Ah, didn't think of that. Thank you, I'll look into it.

Do you get downloaded shit you dont even fucking want ?

>Do you get downloaded shit you dont even ducking want
what you mean user? like malware? nah, i regularly run checks. Have only downloaded like three things since purchasing the laptop, and I'm... I mean I think I have automatic updates disabled. If not I'm doing it rn

No problem. Yeah hp model x360### =hpstream. Don't install temp file cleaning crap it will just slow your machine down. The built in utility works fine. If you want more apps without hogging up all the space you can install portableapps.com onto a flash drive or SD card. Glad I could help.

That's actually a pretty good idea.

Sounds like maybe it was just a slow laptop. I use Ubuntu, and I've never had problems with speed. You could try dual-boot, install linux alongside windoze.

It's an integrated ssd. Soldered right onto the motherboard. Similar to how tablets and phone storage is setup. Not an option.

Wait, I think that was it - dual boot. Windows wasn't on the computer anymore, but it was acting as if it was, and like there wasn't enough space for it to install or run properly.

I remember googling the issue, I got directed to some slider thing on installation to resize how much space each OS got, it got real confusing real quick and didn't address my main problem, that the laptop still thought Windows was on it.

Would restoring to factory settings free up space?

no like things from windows not malware

Yeah, I had the same problem replacing win 8 with Ubuntu. 500GB for an os that was no longer there. I think I sorted it using software called gparted. It's a more complex version of the slider you were directed to.

kali - that distro has a lot of specific features that you probably dont need...
centos and opensuse are lighter weight linux distros but not super mainstream
i've heard positive thing about mx linux but i havent really checked into it

Ah, well I just disabled automatic updates... Other then that, I went through the entire C drive calculating how much space everything was using and it looks like I only have the basic files. No froo froo shit added on like in iOS, man I don't even have solitaire lmao

I just don't know... Everything in C drive adds up to way less than what laptop is telling me is on here. There's nothing else, no other drives except when I plug in a USB. The space fluctuates up and down, like something is actively changing every minutes, I just don't know what. All I know is that when I first got the laptop, it told me only 2gigs were used for internal components. Don't know what changed.

Nice I'm hopless lol. Still learning about computers, grew up poor with little access to them so I missed out on the good learning years. I'll figure it out, thanks for telling me how you were able to solve it on your end! I still got that old laptop kicking around somewhere, I'll dedicate some hobby time to it

Thank you. There's definitely a lot of options, course I just want something simple, customizable, lightweight, and somewhat resembles what I'm used to seeing

Probably some fancy virus that hides itself. Smash cpu with hammer to fix.

genius

liar - those OSs are not slow
this is a standard microshill reply

Sorry man, just was my experience. I gave my reasons why I thought it was slow, shills don't usually explain themselves.

>liar - those OSs are not slow
And HE's the shill?

>shills don't usually explain themselves.
shill detected

In my experience. Just like you didn't explain your opinion above :P

Welcome dude. I remember how frustrating it was. Good idea to keep an old laptop to practice on.

Reset your PC and uninstall any bloatware that Hewlett-Packard pre-installed.

KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID

thanks guys, next stop is this

disk defrag and disk cleanup every time you start it
