FYI most "vanilla" ice cream is actually flavoured with vanillin, a synthetic vanilla extract substitute. It's associated with blandness today partly because it's the most popular ice cream flavour and partly because vanillin is used in practically everything from ice cream and chocolate to air freshener and cosmetics.
Actual vanilla ice cream made with real vanilla pods has a much more complex and exotic flavour and is probably the most patrician type of ice cream commonly available.
