With the removal of Phil Taylor by Peter Wright last night, Wolverhampton Civic Hall is now a far more positive place, as there is no real objection to who wins the Grand Slam of Darts this year. While some choices are more preferable than others, at least we won't see more board signing, Target name drops, wanker motions to the crowd and other general cuntishness in the rest of the tournament.
The third quarter final sees relative unknown Chris Dobey take on James Wade. The North East youngster survived 3 match darts and a Lakeside-style braying Tipton mob from Jamie Hughes to make his first TV quarter final, while the Machine had a very easy victory over Benito van de Pas. The length of the format is sure to give the bipolar left hander a massive advantage over the inexperienced Hollywood, but like his condition, Wadey can either be very good or very bad, which could give Dobey a helping hand.
Our last match in the last eight sees two players who have become notorious for only raising their game when they can be bothered as reigning World Champion Gary Anderson plays 2012 GSoD champion Raymond van Barneveld. Gando was asshurt in victory as he was pushed to the edge by probable post-Lakeside switchee Danny Noppert in a high-quality victory that saw both players average over 100, while RVB put in his worst performance of the tournament so far but was more than enough for all-but-confirmed BDO switcher Glen Durrant who was at least congratulated by the 5 time champ. If both players are as committed as they have been this week and are concentrating for once, this will be nearly as good as Wright-Taylor was last night.
Coverage starts at 8:00pm UK time on SS2.
>Tonight's matches (best of 31 legs) Chris Dobey "The House Elf" v James "The Meds Are Back In Town" Wade Gary "Big Game Counter" Anderson v Barney
As always this time of year, the "transfer window" - PDC Q-School in January (conveniently schedule to take place AFTER Lakeside bravo Bazza) - has started, with an early list available here: pdpa.co.uk/pdpa/q-school/
The biggest name on the list is of course one-time major winner and undercover agent Paul Nicholson. With his break from the game to go into commentary, let's hope he's had his mind sorted and gets back to playing the darts he can.
Jason Morgan
we wade now
Alexander Evans
when exactly has he done commentary?
Asher Diaz
Done it for the World Series events on ITV and the BBC's Champions League of Darts
Justin Cook
sounds like a full time job
Jose Brown
Well he did change his Twitter bio to just "dart player" from "professional dart playet"
Jackson Rodriguez
That last word should be of course be "player"
Oliver Lewis
>dart snot on till 8 for absolutely no fucking reason >have to resort to watching a couple of jobbers playing snooker in a leisure centre on eurosport
Christopher Thomas
Blame rugby for the delay.
Christopher Jones
>rugby literally the worst sport in history and yes im including american football
Adrian Murphy
And we're on now.
Connor Anderson

Zachary Myers
Dobby slipping away now.
Aiden Rivera
Bit quiet tonight?
Hudson Wright
The continentals probably forgot / doing other things.
Dobey a little unlucky to be 3-7 down, because his stats are almost identical to Wadey. Also:
>8 legs played >high out: 40
Julian Wilson
So theyd both get their shit slapped in the next round anyway
Landon Cook
Wade v Gando/Barney shaping up to be a good one
Angel Turner
wade playing some lovely stuff
Caleb Garcia
Still, Clown and MvG both looked better, so whoever wins this (like we didn't know) will be favourite.
Connor Scott
>le 100 to 120 checkout man This is classic Wade.

Austin Collins
Dobey actually LEADING on avg now, despite being down 5-13.

Wade just too much for Dobey.
Good prospect though.

I lately noticed some new folks on /180/ and was wondering if it is a good idea to create some kind of /180/ starter kit post. It's not long ago since I myself was new here, so maybe it will be helpful to others. Since I didn't want to go to bed after the games yesterday, I wrote down a few things which turned out to be probably way too much information. If you think its a good idea, maybe we can improve it together?
Apologies in advance for the incoming text wall.
Matthew Thomas
The /180/ starter set: Stream sources: cricfree, stream2watch
Darts Organizations: PDC (only professional players, lots of TV presence, commercial successful, tournaments are big events where spectators get shitfaced) and BDO (old school, manages the grassroots, but usually inferior to PDC in pro segment).
Glossary: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_darts Uncle Bazza: Barry Hearn, Chairman of the PDC, made darts what it is today, always set on squeezing out more money, big Phil Taylor fan Jobber: Someone who only plays for the prize money and doesn't put any heart or serious effort in his game. Often used as banter. 9-darter: Darts perfect game, those are very rare. /180/'s OP: based guy who never fails to open /180/ thread one hour before games start.
Players: Autism: Nickname for Michael van Gerwen, currently the best player on the planet, nickname derived from his exceptional talent and his slightly autistic antics on the stage. Not really autistic, though. Philth / Taylel: Nick for Phil Taylor, darts GOAT and world No.1 from before you were born until not too long ago. Slowly declining due to age. Widely disliked, mainly bacause of groping wimminz, but also other stuff Wolfie: Nickname for Martin Adams, BDO hero, true gentleman of the game, never say anything bad about him Snackpot/Fatpot: Nick for Adrian Lewis, great talent, but lazy fatass. Should be winning finals, but prefers eating burgers over practicing Clown/Clownman: Nick for Peter Wright. Good player, but boring character, which he tries to hide with ridiculous outfits. Barney: Raymond van Barneveld, former BDO champion who switched to PDC in 2006. Likeable player, don't insult! Gando: Gary Anderson, 2-times world champion, well known for 1. not giving a shit about smaller tournaments and 2. miscounting.

Wade, Barney and Gando look in pretty decent form at the moment. Id probably still be putting my money on Gando and Wade even if he somehow beats MVG.

[part 2] Wanna start playing yourself? You'll need eqiupment: - Board: Winmau Blade 4. Don't buy unicorn! - Darts (barrels): Not too thin (difficult to handle), not too light, not too expensive. 21-25g is the most common weight range, and don't buy any faggy overpriced signature models. Buy tungsten, not brass. - Shafts and flights: Buy lots of these. Those need to be replaced a lot. At least 5x3 shafts and 5x3 flights. - Buy a sharpener. The name is misleading, darts don't need to be sharp, but the sides of the tip need to be roughened up a bit from time to time, so the dart will stick more firmly in the board. - You need some kind of protection for your wall. Buy one, or make one yourself, thick cardboard will do. - There are several great scoring apps out there, which can also simulate an opponent at varoius skill levels. My favourite is n01 - nakka.com/soft/n01/index_eng.html - n01 levels/darts per leg: 1-60, 2-40, 3-30, 4-28, 5-26, 6-24, 7-22, 8-20, 9-18, 10-16, 11-14, 12-12. If you beat it at level 12, congrats, you'll be the next world champion.
Practicing: - Hammering T20 is better than nothing, but it is only a part of the game. - Practice doubles. Focus on the most popular, like D20 or D16, but also do some around-the-board doubles practice. - A good and easy practice game is 170: You start at 170 and try to finish with double out. This practices both your doubles skill and your ability to set up finishes.

>Barney vs Gando
Who is /180/ rooting for?
Ian Anderson
No one in particular, I like both. Just hoping for a good match. A final MvG-Barney would be great, though.
Grayson Turner
Maybe Barney will start playing now he's on the board.
Utter shite from him in the first two legs.
Jayden Nguyen

Jose Reed
Did barney just took his nutrition bar? 9 darter incoming after break
Levi Williams
He'll blame the glasses no doubt.
Why deviate from your best route on a small finish like that? You wouldn't see Wadey going 9-D8 on it.

That 96 might be the match winning break.
Poor last six darts in the leg from Barney, especially the pull into T4.
Adrian Ward
He knew that this T4 was lethal to him, you could see it in his face.
Gando really heating up now.
Brayden Bell
...and that 100 surely is the knockout blow.
Been a great game regardless of the outcome but Barney just slipped when it mattered most.
Isaiah Scott
Good game
Anthony Murphy
Gando finally wearing down Barney with an incredible scoring barrage. Awesome game!

And that D20 ends the second night of the quarter finals that was much like the first: a blowout followed by one hell of a fixture.
James Wade's progression to the semi-finals for the first time since 2010 was a very simple one, if not terribly stereotypical of him. A 92.14 average and 42% checkout rate for the doesn't really tell the whole tale as Chris Dobey got close to the Machine on his throw on numerous occasions but took just one of those opportunities to break. Hollywood kept ending up one dart behind Wade and was punished time after time; a 152 out near the end of the match for the youngster was unfortunately on his throw and didn't impact on the result as such. Despite the 16-5 scoreline, the Northumberland lad has a bright future and here's hoping he does well at the Players Champs Finals and the Worlds.
Gary Anderson against Raymond van Barneveld is surely a contender for match of the year. After a 4-1 blitz in the opening session for the Scotsman, helped easily by Barney forgetting to turn up until leg 3, the Dutchman pulled it back to 5-5 and then the match was completely nip and tuck all the way: RVB's 164 out answered in the next leg by Gando's 121, the lead swapping between legs in pendulum-esque fashion, a near-100 average all the way for both men. This was darts at its finest but unfortunately there had to be a loser to this contest and that was the five time World champion, whose scoring reverted to inconsistent mode from the 22nd leg onwards while the two time World champion went into a points panic, dropping in 180s for fun and even had time to go into "unable to count" mode as he fluffed two big number attempts to go 13-12 down but then won 4 straight legs in only 17 visits to the board, smacking in 5 maximums in the process.
There's only one more day of Grand Slam action with these semis from 1:00pm UK tomorrow, followed by the final at 7:00pm UK:
>James Wade v Gary Anderson >Michael van Gerwen v Peter Wright
