A long time ago- I can't quite place when- Sup Forums was about doing things for the lulz, threads were full of win, and there wasn't such rampant bullshit like there is today. You'd see threads of awesome shit like raids, genuinely humorous YLYL threads. Threads were started with an Asian man on the phone saying "Wuts dat? I raff I ruse?" and had pictures OTHER than the fucking banana. In fact, in those days that stupid fucking banana didn't exist. That banana is a symptom of the stage 4 cancer that killed it.

As we all know Sup Forums as a whole has one real thing in common, one thing that has been prized by everyone since its inception and even today: ANONYMITY.
If you go on SomethingAwful, you go on other forums, people have names and forum avatars and forum signatures and bullshit. But not here. And the culture of faggotry kept the normalfags out, and things were awesome. There was NO REASON for the normalfags to come here, because they saw Sup Forums as a fucking cesspool. And they might have been right from an outside perspective, but they weren't back then.

But then word of Sup Forums's awesomeness spread. Due to things like /r/Sup Forums (which has existed for NINE YEARS- do the math Sup Forumsros), KnowYourMeme, and other faggotry, word of Sup Forums's exploits spread. And people started to realize that this was where the action was happening.
Now here's the thing, Sup Forumstards. Narcissist posters (hereafter narcposters) love two things: themselves and being in the spotlight. Sup Forums had safeguards against this kind of faggotry ("tits or GTFO" and "There are no girls on the Internet" existed because the only people revealing their gender were women- and dispelling your anonymity was a crime that had to be punished by degrading yourself- showing dem titties).
But the safeguards WERE NOT ENOUGH. Because there are male narcposters too.
That seriously will not help when people post the same shit every single day flooding the system before a thread can start. If the people who make the same thread multiple times a day would focus on making a decent thread, that would help the problem much more.

The creators and contributors moved elsewhere. I hold no interest in change. Sup Forums has a life cycle, just like the dialup bbses, newsgroups, anonymous ftp sites, etc. Today it's just a place to gain eyeballs and to serve as a packet transport service.

The TL;DR of what happened next is simple. Since so many kids were jumping in the Sup Forumsig-kids pool, the adult swimmers decided to turn up the chlorine.
Analogy aside, Sup Forums took a turn for the cringe. Suddenly you'd see gore, loli porn, fur, and all kinds of shit spammed everywhere. Regular Sup Forumstards, the ones who created content and contributed to threads, they left. And all that was left was the people spamming garbage, and the more resilient narcposters.

This continued for a few years. It was a slow trickle of oldfags out and newfags in.
But in 2012 you'd still see old/b/ stuff. You actually saw good content being posted. Of course there were shitters- namefags and avatarfags in the Katawa Shoujo threads and elsewhere- but that was moderated as normal.
The final nails in the coffin, as I see it, were two things: The Fappening, and The Banana.

This basically resulted in the last content creators leaving for greener pastures, as nobody wants to be left posting in threads that quickly reach page 10. Not much more to say about that. However, YLYL threads still went strong.

What happened to Sup Forums?
People came together offsite, and built offsite resources to support their activities. People realized there was no reason to either rely on, or to identify with Sup Forums.
By the time Moot got around to noticing the opportunities provided by all the cool stuff going on, he was a good five years behind it all. His draw site wasn't needed. It was all already out there.
The second change was the loss of a pathway for creative types to get started here. All they encountered was hostility, while noticing more welcoming communities elsewhere. Those communities grew. Sup Forums stagnated.
That's it. That's all there is to it.
Even the crazyness, raids, fappenings, etc. It all starts offsite by groups who don't care in the least for Sup Forums.
Sup Forums is now a packet transport service. Get over it and go do something cool or productive with your talent.

The naked banana actually came before the Fappening- in 2010, IIRC. What should have happened? People should have ignored it, and it would've gone away, maybe it would've been posted once a YLYL thread and that'd be it. But now? The average YLYL thread has (and I've actually tabulated this from about 6 months of these threads in the past year) TWENTY-FIVE FUCKING VARIATIONS OF GIFS AND IMAGES WITH THE GODDAMN BANANA. Which is more than everything else (images at least) combined, per thread. Narcposters (remember them?) realized how big a reaction it got, and the more pure-evil trolls of Sup Forums realized it too, and they spammed it. It was the pure-evil trolls who made most of the content you see there, all the variations and gifs. Most of those things are six or seven goddamn years old and still not funny (!!!!).
So basically, everyone that still had a YLYL folder from old/b/ left in disgust.
There were some other factors which I've left out because there are some stories better left untold (and most of them are better told by people with better memories than mine).
If you know where all the oldfags went, user, I urge you to tell me. I'm telling their story, and I want to put that story into the permanent record so that in a hundred years- if humanity is still around- there will be one final record of our trolling left on this Earth.
By the way, thought I'd mention that the first letter of every sentence in the thesis will spell out the Navy Seal copypasta. Because that deserves its place in the history books IMHO.
