What the hell went wrong?
where is the sequel or prequel?

Costner at his goddamn peak
audiences weren't ready for it at the time and it bombed iirc
Prequel to tell this guy's life story
I sometimes wake up in a cold sweat balls deep in one of Costner's gill slits.
Unpleasant, user.
who owns the rights?
>What the hell went wrong?
A massive budget. Literally massive. Like, small planet-sized budget. Nearly all on practical effects.
On a shitty, and myopic remake of Road Warrior.
There is nothing shitty about this move. It's pure unfiltered fun.
Do you hate fun user?
I agree with budget thing
>where is the sequel or prequel
See 'The Postman'
you know it wouldn't surprise me if this fuckin movie got remade soon
...
This.
It's a great companion movie to the Mad Max films but cost too much and didn't make it back.
Crazy thing is that even though they wasted a lot of money on dumb shit (CGI'd Costner hairline, trips back to the mainland as there were no toilets on set) you can still see that this was an epic film from the finished product.
Nowadays movies like Ghostbusters deliver fuck all and cost 140 million.
who would be cast in this inevitable reboot?
it didn't bomb, budget of 170 and made 260
disappointing and it got horrible reviews, but Costner gets mad when people say it bombed
It actually was a really great movie. Awesome acting (maybe some a bit over the top), great practical sets and effects... it just went way over its projected budget.
I'd love a heartfelt remake/sequel, but it'll never happen. This is one of the dvd's that got played like crazy in my house growing up and I'll probably show it proudly to my kid once a year as soon as he's 5 years old, like my dad with The Thing.
But seriously, this movie was fucking awesome. Great story, awesome character dev, went all-out on the sets, tons of legit (not Michael Bay CGI) explosions and stunts... They just don't make them like they used to. I kinda wish this movie was discussed more on this board.

Agree.

Totally disagree. Fight me.
Utilizing certain themes, sure... but I don't think they gave him gills in The Postman.
If a diehard fan director actually remade this and was true to the original, I would sell my soul to fund it.
Fat fucking chance.
renny harlin needs to direct the prequel.
all in all, not a bad movie - just suffers from bad reputation
It wasn't that great. It had some great ideas and concepts, but it all boiled down to a very tame, almost PG-13 movie, and I watched the directors cut.
Saw it in the theater, thinking it was Mad Max: Water Edition, and I liked it. I didn't understand why everyone said it was shit.
For months it was hailed as the most expensive film of all time.
I think it killed Costner, though. I remember when he was hot shit, after movies like Bodyguard and Robin Hood. I liked him as a kid.
They should just make a sequel ala The Chronicles of Riddick.
>The Mariner is still sailing around
>Suddenly captured by mere-people
>Brought to an underwater city
>Turns out he's one of them
>they have a Roman like society
>Creepy ruler with pasty white skin has beef with The Mariner
>Turns out he was send out to find a special machine that would raise water levels even more
>But he went rogue
>They still found the machine without him
>He fights them all and destroys the machine
>Swims back up
>They follow him
>Fight on a floating village
>Probably throw a big shark in there just for fun
>Maybe a love interest from long ago
>Ends up saving the world and actually lowering the water.
>PROFIT!
