Ice in a glass of water melts, the water level doesn't change. Ice in the polar caps melt, and sea level is supposed to rise?

Dafuq am I missing?

Land ice that melts into the sea. There's a lot of it.

Seems like a great question until you think about it for more than a second.

The sea level doesn't rise because the ice melts. It rises because the land begins to melt and flows into the sea.

You're right. And Trump promised to give NASA money?? BULLSHIT!! You already know more than those pathetic cucks do

The ice caps aren't floating in the water. Try melting some ice into the water and the water level will rise.

All the polar bears and penguins in the water raise the levels. Kind of like when you get into a bath.

You're all kinda getting it.
1. Unaccounted ice that's land locked.
2. Oceans are salt water and glaciers are mostly fresh, so density affects how much you're actually seeing.
3. The biggest influence on sea level rise is thermal expansion. Everything expands when it gets hotter and water is no exception.

That ice is land-locked and well above sea level.

As long as the rich and famous are buying up coastal property, fear not!

Thanks

You're whale cum faggot.

stfu nigger cuck

Remove by hand the icecubes from the glass.

Does the water go down?

Think of it this way, you have a square clear box. You fill the edges with dirt leaving and empty circle in the middle of the box. U place an ice cube in the center. Dirt is still dry. Ice melts and dirt gets flooded. Now imagine that as a whole world scale, with much more ice.

it's called the FUCKING CONTINENT OF ANTARTICA DUMBASS. All that ice is just sitting on a landmass it's not floating in an ocean. Suck my cock you climate change denying faggot

Condensation faggit.

>3. The biggest influence on sea level rise is thermal expansion. Everything expands when it gets hotter and water is no exception.

Actually, water is the only molecule known on earth to expand when frozen and contract (mass wise) when it melts. Please verify yourself.

most sea level rise won't be from melting ice

it will be because liquid water expands slightly going from 4 to 5 degrees, so entire ocean becomes 1% bigger

see how there some ice floating above the water level? see how when it melts the water level rises? See how matter doesn't disappear? see how you're retarded?

>Other substances that expand on freezing are silicon, gallium, germanium, antimony, bismuth, plutonium and also chemical compounds that form spacious crystal lattices with tetrahedral coordination.
Also, by "mass wise", you mean volume wise.
Also, yes, Water will condense a little when it melts from ice, but all the water that was already liquid will expand when the heat increases..

You're actually retarded. It doesn't matter if the ice is above the surface. It's displacing water. Melting doesn't increase the level. Seas level is rising because of ice on land melting. Fucking idiots.

ok how about this, put a cube of ice into a glass.
see how the water level is zero?
now wait for it to melt.
Now kill yourself.

The Northern ice cap is largely floating ice. If it melted, it wouldn't change the sea level as much as if the Southern melted.

Antarctica is an entire continental landmass covered in ice. If that ice were to melt off of the land and into the water, the sea level would rise.

Thats not how it works. Let's say that a 1 x 1 x 1 cube of ice is equal to a 1 x 1 x 0.9 thing of water (Ice is less dense than water, these arent the precise values, but that doesnt matter). The ice cube would float with 10% of it above water, as the weight of the water displaced = total weight of the ice cube. That is to say, there is a 1 x 1 x 0.9 hole in the water. So when the ice melts, it will fill this hole exactly, because weight of the water that would fill that 1 x 1 x 0.9 hole is equal to the weight of the 1 x 1 x 1 ice cube.

Wdym zero? A floating object displaces an amount of water equal to the wieght of that object. The displaced water is equal in weight to the ice cube. So if you were to replace the ice cube with water equal in mass to it, the hole would be perfectly filled, leaving the water level the same. Melting is that replacement process.

Physics. You're missing physics. By a looooong way, you simple fuck.

Don't have time to explain, so i'll just point and laugh with everyone else.

Bill Nye already explained this one

The ice in Antarctica is sitting on top of rock. If that melts, it goes into the ocean, causing the level to rise.

good lord.

so the earth its oceans and the effects on the moon are for you... no more than a glass of water with ice in it.

there are so many extra considerations
