Yaah, there's a PS1 version (in collection), DS, and a SNES. All mechanically and graphically equivalent (DS version might have upped graphics, forget), and the DS version has an extra ending. So, you got plenty of option. Plus probably available virtually on some consoles.
I'd just say it is in the vein of FFIV-VI in terms of combat, so if Active Time Battle is annoying to you then it might not be great for you.

Yaah, I tend to prefer the original platform myself for most games.
ATB is fine by me, I just know it's not for everyone. I do prefer other systems, but I will say there is some added twist to it that make it more interesting, and it makes timing a bit more critical so it doesn't just feel like waiting.
