Is there a single movie in the horror genre that could be considered art? Or at the very least, a good movie first and foremost, that happens to be scary, other than The Shining

Many horror films are artistic. But not that fucking ring/7 days shit.

It doesn't get much more artistic than The Thing. It's a completely raw and uncensored form of artistic expression.

Wicker Man
Mario Bava's films

The Exorcist

The Exorcist. Is this site so contrarian it won't even admit that The Exorcist is a great film?

protip: all movies are art. there's great art and shit art, of course, but it's all art nonetheless. art is creating something through skill and creativity, individually or collectivelly. way too many people believe that art means "the very best of the best" and that's bullshit, really. it's like people who say rap/edm/post-rock or whatever "isn't music." yeah, it is

>dae le hidden gem xD

rosemary's baby

Damn that movie scared me shit less as a kid

What are you even trying to say? It's a well known movie and most people love it.

Funny Games USA by Michael Haneke.

Very well done thriller and deconstruction of the horror / torture porn genre. There's superb direction and performances.

the VVitch

Nobody told me the Wicker Man was a musical

That is an absolutely correct opinion, the only reasonable opinion on the matter, and I've never seen anybody else on /v express it.

Dracula
Let the right ones in
The Shinning
Ju-on
REC 1 & 2

It's one of my favorites. But that's just me

the exorcist is shit

It depresses me that you were probably in the Possession thread I started earlier today. What kind of pleb can't recognize that The Exorcist is an amazing film, even if you don't personally like it?

i dont think it that great

Shit, are you me?

I nominate:
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre
Suspiria
House
Don't Look Now
Audition
Cannibal Holocaust
Black Christmas
The Beyond
Kwaidan
Maniac
Angst
My Bloody Valentine
Messiah of Evil
Christmas Evil
The Cremator
Blood Feast
Alucarda
Don't Deliver Us From Evil

...and tons more. You gotta be fucking oblivious or a massive elitist to think there are no "great" horror films.

I'M IN THE MOOD FOR HORROR

GIVE ME A GOOD MODERN HORROR MOVIE

(for reference, I just watched Absentia and thought it was a good movie, but not really scary)

Wolf Creek 1 and 2 are good. If you haven't seen It Follows and The Babadook, watch those.

If you want something less conventional, Sheitan from 2006 is pretty dope.

Suspiria is shit. The Beyond and Fulci in general is leagues better than Argento trash.

A lot of your list is fun but not really great movies. For example, Cannibal Holocaust, Maniac, and Blood Feast. Those are good for shock value but aren't anything special. The rest of your list is solid, I haven't seen Angst or The Cremator. I'll check them out.

The Babadook.

>Kwaidan, Cannibal Holocaust, and Christmas Evil
>on the same list
now theres something ill probably never see again

Anybody?

One of my favorite movies but I don't find it scary. Scary is such a subjective idea though. I guess I've just never thought of it as a horror even though it technically is one.

the seventh seal, ringu, and hausu, duh

It Follows was overrated

The Babadook was shit

Fuck it, I'm going to watch Jacob's Ladder. Are there any good more psychological modern horror movies?

The Shinning is art. Its a master piece. Hell, there's a whole shitty documentary on it.

its a thriller

the first The Ring was a huge fucking deal when it came out.
still remember watching it on VHS

Vacancy

mfw i didn't read the title..... sorry guys......

Herschell Gordon Lewis was transgressive as hell for his time, and Maniac is possibly the greatest lead performance in a horror film ever (behind Isabelle Adjani in Possession.)

I also thought Cannibal Holocaust was a beautiful film, and has some interesting stuff to say about violence and human nature.

I guess it's different strokes for different folks, but I gotta wonder if people underestimate horror just because it isn't popular with critics. For example, I don't see why Texas Chain Saw shouldn't be considered one of the crowning achievements of the New Hollywood movement of the 70s, other than the fact that it's not...what? Classy? Easy to digest?

...

Many still classify it as a "horror" film. I mean, thriller and horror is a thin line anyway so I guess it's all subjective

>ctrl+f
>wrong turn
>no wrong turn

The fuck is wrong with you people, have you no taste?

Without a doubt the movie Victim is art horror.

the only part i found to be horror was the beginning. it was horror for the audience of its time but to me it doesnt do much as a horror, but its a great film

I see where you are coming from. I agree with you on Chainsaw.

You have a real hard on for Italian classics.

I'm a little biased against the Italian cannibal movies due to the animal killing on film, so there's that. Also I've always personally preferred Cannibal Ferrox. Not enough dicks getting chopped off in Holocaust imo.

Maniac just doesn't do it for me. If we're talking best performance in a similar role I give it to Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer over Maniac any day of the week.

the others is kino as fuck

Probably one of the best no question.

Suspiria
Underage faggot detected, I bet you watch The Walking Dead.

Yeah, I really won't attempt to justify the actual animal killings. I think Tarantino put it best, something like "I go to a movie to see make believe, I don't want to see somebody actually kill stuff." At the same time, it doesn't really impact my view of the movie as a whole -- I disagree with the filmmakers but you can't deny that Cannibal Holocaust is powerful regardless.

I love Maniac for the exact reasons people probably don't like it. It's one of those films that actually feels alive, to me. On the one hand, you've got this really shoddy, seedy production with no budget and poorly written victims. Then you've got Joe Spinell, who seems like he could be an ACTUAL maniac these seedy filmmakers just found on the street. It's real, but not. One of the most uncomfortable films I've ever seen.

Henry was good but maybe a bit too "movie"-ish for the story it had to tell.

Silent hill was visually stunning as well as a little emotional.

28 days later...high emotion zombie movie...

Yeah no
>alucarda
Yeah no, I mean all the films on your list are shit, but that one in particular is the worst

Good argument. I take it you haven't actually seen any of those.

The Witch
