Eh. I'd expect that to be true but this is the longest I've had a phone that didn't drop and break on me and I don't even have a case on it because, as you've stated, they protect so little of it anyways.
(It did break on me once but that's because a counter-top corner bore down onto it. more of a puncture than a break)
