In ear headphones are horrendous for your hearing, far too much SPL with nowhere else to go due to the isolation, active noise cancellation has the same issues, even if the noise is acoustically 'cancelled', which it never is exactly.
I consider myself an audiophile on a budget, I have a decent Audioengine setup (active speakers, sub, DAC) and a decent pair of Audio-Technica circumaural headphones. Gets me by without breaking the bank. My setup is generally mind blowing to most people who've never heard anything of decent quality (ie Logitech trash).
There are definitely diminishing returns in audio quality after a certain price point, I'm quite content to sit on the quality level I own for the forseeable future, which is still better than the 99%.
