I was expecting drive 2.

That's basically what it was aesthetically, just with the dreamy confusing-ness of it multiplied by 100

bump because I have been planning to watch this for a long time

As far as technicals go Nicolas Winding Refn is an absolute visionary as far as I'm concerned. His use of color and cinematography is always absolute God-tier, he has never made a film (to my knowledge) that isn't stylistically on-point

Plan on watching Only God Forgives tonight, torrenting it right now

>Why was this movie so panned? As far as pure film goes it was mesmerizing

I don't le get it that guy from the notebook thinks he can dew karate.

Also because it's not spelled out and most people don't care about effort in visuals/directing.

I've had too late blues by cassavetes for tonight but I think I'll change it to Only god forgives, thanks user

Because it's not capeshit flick

Lack of direction, unintentionally laughable dialogue when there is any, and gratuitous violence.

Personally I loved the film but I believe the above reasons are why normie-critics didn't like it. Whenever a film has sharply polarizing reviews you know its going to be good

I love shit like this, it's a meditative experience. By all traditional accounts I should hate it as well as Springbreakers yet i loved them. I believe that people who hate them think too much and don't allow themselves to feel.

>pure film
Are you sure you don't mean...

...kino?

>le nothing happened
>le what was the point
Basically

If I love this will I at least like Neon Demon?

yes

Sweet

I like the film but I am not a huge fan of the heavy handed religious themes desu

Because the main theme is male castration and wanting to fuck your mom

It's not the most universal film out there

>male castration and wanting to fuck your mom
>not the most universal film out there

Because its cringeworthy as fuck

In my opinion this is Nicolas Winding Refn's best film so far, and it's in my top five. I understand why people don't like it, but all the things that people count as negatives (slow, obtuse symbolism, lack of dialogue) I count as positives. It ultimately comes down to a matter of personal preference.

Has anyone else seen The Neon Demon? Saw it in an empty theater, absolutely terrific experience. I love it as much as Drive, maybe even more.

>Wow, I've never seen neon purple before!

go watch some capeshit

>Saw it in an empty theater, absolutely terrific experience. I love it as much as Drive, maybe even more.
Rub it in user. I waited a year plus to see it just to have it dropped from every theater near me after like two showings I couldn't make it too.

most critics are fags these days

>Neon Demon released early in Danish theaters
>Want to watch it with a friend of mine, as we both love Refn's movies
>We live in different cities
>Plan to watch it the saturday of the week I get there
>It's scheduled to run even a week after, so it's no rush
>On the monday I go online to order tickets
>Movie is gone
I was actually so mad

Has anyone watched this or neon demon on acid? Or would you recommend Lars Von trier films instead?

I keep meaning to watch it but the stupid title turns me off desu

Basically the same thing for me except I don't even think it was two weeks. Been checking almost everyday for a rip or leak

I think I watched Drive on shrooms but my mind was so full of fuck that I didn't really even pay attention. Watched Spring Bringers on acid though and it felt like I was watching Koyaanisqatsi or something.

no

Pretentious crap where nothing at all happens. Nobody actually likes this 'film', people just say they do to look smart.

Is The Fluorescent Devil online yet?

it's okay user. there is no conspiracy against you. you just have low self-esteem.

I hated OGF but loved neon demon

I'm in the half of this film right now, it's horrible, from acting to plot. Even aesthetics are not that interesting, fuck I have 45 minutes left eh

This
It looked downright fantastic but it ultimately felt pointless

Actually, last night I watched only god forgives for the first time on acid. I thought it was 9/10 kino. The fucked up shit wasn't just so fucked up it would send you into a bad trip, and the visuals were fucking amazing. Think Snyders cinematography multiplied by about 10 along with a coherent script. But you have to put a lot of effort into watching it if you're tripping since a lot of conversations are in another language (Japanese?) you need to pay attention to body language whenever someone Asian is talking because they rarely speak English and there's no subtitles. At least not on my copy.

>nothing at all happens
Holy shit this is the most plebeian statement ever. Shit starts going down like 5 minutes in and the whole film revolves around that. You probably just quit paying attention because you're a faggot and can't deal with foreign language films.

This nonsense is so inorganic to any sense of globetrotter restlessness or anything explicitly or metaphorically to do with British or American colonialism that it just feels derivative. That Kubrickian scene in Drive of dead-eyed strippers watching an assault gets extended here in a more elaborate whorehouse sequence where catatonic hookers bear mute witness to instances of police corruption. Refn’s tableau of organdy-gowned call-girls listening to pop while watching violence in a bouquet-bedecked whorehouse is the ultimate David Lynch parody.

Gosling and Refn have art ambitions–a strange sense of fun. But how can film culture progress with fantasies like this? There’s no shock or outrage left. Refn relies upon a level of menace (unerotic, non-provocative) that precludes caring about or responding to violence, vulnerability, mortality. This is cinema for unsophisticated viewers who don’t already know Bunuel’s eye-slashing, Altman’s Coke bottle assault or Shakespeare/Julie Taymor’s Titus. Children of Kubrick, Friedkin, Lynch and Tarantino, they remain infantile about movies.

Thank you Armond

Ah ha ha!
And I thought I was an annoying hipster.

I unironically see it as a Drive prequel

(My interpretation was that OGF had a triumphant ending for Julian)

Because plot-fags are the most vocal? Even among critics

>It was too dry, the movie could've been cut down to half its length

I dunno why these faggots watch movies at all, might as well read just wikipedia summaries

The film wasn't made with Colonalism and exploitation of less powerful countries, dip fuck. Refn has stated that he is not a political filmmaker or ever intends to be and it was originally set within Britain but Refn loves Thailand and it was cheaper to film there. I swear pseudo-intellectuals spout shit out to seem intelligent but neglect doing their research beforehand.

for real. but they wouldn't be pseudo-intellectuals in the first place if doing research was something they took seriously

>muh authorial intent
>muh interviews

cancer. i hope when you watch a porno you first contact the director and ask his permission to have a boner.

Calling a film trash based on a baseless theory of its meaning that you concocted is laughable.
>I have theorized the meaning behind this movie.
>The theory I created is dumb. Therefore, the movie is dumb.
Do you contact the directors of Blacked and give them praise for their social advancement of African American culture and the defamation of Anglo-Saxon inferiority in modern society?

Only God Forgives is the definition of mediocre. Only someone so far up their own ass who likes the smell and taste of shit could actually like this. People think this is a masterpiece. The people who respond to you on Sup Forums and call you a pleb are Only God Forgives fans. This has to be one of the most pathetic auteur circlejerks I've seen. Dedicated to Jodorowsky? He doesn't deserve vapid trash with his name slapped on it.

i'm not the user that wrote that post. it's just that your immediate reaction to criticism of a movie is to invoke the "director's intent" to "not be political". this makes you, in terms of movie discussion, subhuman trash. sorry for the misunderstanding.

pretty much, refns films are the for the wannabe film connoisseurs.

aka Sup Forums

I'm not saying that the meaning of a work is entirely derived from the author's intention but it does serve as guidance. I can't get upset at a work because it doesnt fully explain some idea that has zero connection to the work. How dare Trier try and the exploitive nature of migrant workers in Antichrist. He did just terrible.

In my experience, everyone who watched it and hated it (read: most) were doing one big thing wrong; they were thinking too much about it.

They were trying to make sense of everything and what everything means and in my opinion that's a mistake. If you want to enjoy this movie fully I think you have to do the opposite of think about it, you just have to take each scene for what it is as an experience and the visuals and mood it generates, because that's where Refn's films really shine.

Dude just turn your brain off
