The melody is the most accessible part of music.
The human voice is overwhelmingly used to provide the melody (in fact, in many traditions it is always part of the melody).
Verbal language, whether spoken or sung, is much easier for the average person to comprehend the meaning, compared to the musical language of progression, counterpoint, etc.
And, as a rule, the vast majority of humans have the ability to vocalize, which means that music with melodic vocals and comprehensible lyrics is extremely interactive for a typical audience.
It's ultimately just easier than mentally "singing along" with instruments.
