Wage gap is not a gender thing, it's about "want"s. You want to be an engineer or a lawyer or a doctor, and earn good money? Then study and get yourself some good examina. Many men do that, and some women too. You have a gift in sports or whatever, and want to make money out of it? The William sisters and J K Rowling did exactly that. You want to take the simple way through life? Then by all means, do that. More women than men do that, in my honest opinion. The world needs cleaners and cashiers too. But don't complain later. So, no, wage gap is not about genders, it's about ambitions. Simple as that.

Ikr, in my area there is a clear white majority. my school is like equidistant between my house and a significant metropolitan area, so my school has ethnics but where i live doesn't. The only non-whites i see are the indian(?) family that i think owns the sunoco. if an ethnic person applied anywhere, they would instantly get the job because they would fill part of the diversity void at the business.

My dad is on the school board and he told me they really would rather not hire male elementary school teachers for that reason.

Assuming you have two people working the same job, different companies pay differently which can be a factor.

Assuming it's the same company maybe one person is more qualified than the other. Even a small edge can mean a bigger offer at the time of hiring.

Assuming both people are equally skilled on paper it could be that one person just asked for more money.

Assuming one person was just offered more, it could be a situation of timing. The company might be doing better that week/month/year and can add in an extra 1k-2k.

STEM is a sausage fest because guys generally think that they need to have a solid career, while many girls think more about what they like to do. A guy will think that he needs to have a career so that he can reasonably start a family and support them. The thing with stay at home parents is while they don't bring in money, they save money you'd spend on baby sitters. At a actual day care center in my area my two kids would costs upwards of $2000 dollars a month, so until I get some schooling in, it isn't worth working at the same time as my wife (who makes more than I did).

If you have a purely capitalist framework, then yes, but it's much smaller than 22% (~5%, which likely is due to small prejudices after correcting for hours worked and job selection). But, the societal issue of devaluing "womens work" is significant if you have a different framework, such as a socialist one (among many others). In that case, the valuation of jobs comes into question, as many jobs are paid more or less, despite equivalent demand and training requirements (such as nurses vs engineers). The market deems this so (and admittedly it's a complicated question, given involvement of unions, govt etc.) but ultimately it is divorced partially from work output.

The better question is, why do they want it to be real so badly?

If it came off that way I didn't mean it to. I'm trying to make rational arguments despite this being a b thread. Feel free to lay out a counter argument or point me to where I'm being deceptive and I'll try to respond.

If I had a female friend (or a male friend for that matter) and they told me they were being unfairly compensated. My advice would be to find a better/different job, then help them do that if they were receptive to the idea. My point is people are taken advantage of everywhere, in all aspects of life. It's not us vs them, it's you vs the world, and you gotta fight.

My first place said they wouldn't give me a raise without a higher degree from college, so I left.

My second place said raises came with federal budget increases, so I'd be waiting on that, so I left.

My current place tells me that in ~5 months I should expect around a 5% increase and maybe smaller one off bonuses, so here I am.

If you want more money, ask for it.
If they won't give it to you, but you know your worth that, find an employer who agrees. Trust me, they're out there. I've never been at the same place for more than a year and a half and each new place was happy to steal me away at a higher cost.

The wage gap is the result of men always being the ones working and women always staying at home to do the houshold.
Now after men build the world to what it is, did all the dirty work to build up entire companies from the ground up, several generations, passed on from father to son, finally able to reap the benefits from decades of hard work, women decide they now also want to work, skip everything and instantly get to equal pay.

Now no one is even preventing them from doing so, the statistics being used to point out a wage gap are comparing the wages of men who've been working their entire lives, to a bunch of 20-30 years old at the start of their career.
