Ask a car salesman anything /
>Tales from the dealership

how cheap i can get a car for ?

Generally anywhere between 95-110% of what the dealer paid for the car, which is usually somewhat underneath NADA retail. Just keep haggling.

tale of your worst customer ?

Let me tell you a story of one of my first ever customers
>be brand new to car business
>weird looking guy walks up to the door and comes in
>wtf
>ask him if he needs help with anything
>he wants to lease a cheap little new car
>i can smell the wendys in his breath
>okay sure lets see what we got
>asking for some info, name, number, shit like that
>he has no trade
>he walks a a mile to work every day
>he works 20 hours a week at fucking wendys lol
>i had no idea he only worked 20 hours at wendys so i took him on a test drive in a cheapo car
>does not listen to my instructions on test drive route
>"woah dude i love the turbos in this car"
what fucking turbos?
>we finally end the test drive after 45 munites of sidewalk travel
>we get back and begin to discuss numbers
>"i can only afford 150 a month with no money down and i have no credit score"
>i ask him if he has a decent cosigner
>"i have to ask my aunt"
>end up breaking down payments, it's like 350 a month lol
>he proceeds to ask his aunt that night i guess
>comes in 2 days later with his aunt
>shes ready to do paperwork
>she sees the p&s for 350 a month
>shes like wtf and asks why its that much
>i tell her that was the figure we came up with for no money down for a brand new fucking car and bad credit
>apparently this dude told his aunt it was only 80 dollars
>i proceed to learn that this kid is an autist who ran away from florida to live with her in massachusetts
>i proceed to watch this kid get dragged by the ear out of a dealership
>he was easily in his 20s
>corn-kernel-sized dandruff hits the floor as he struggles
>i never saw that dude again
>i never went to wendys after that

have you ever had to lie to a customer to sell something, and if so, what was it?

I personally try to refrain from lying to a customer, but a pretty easy fib to say to someone looking for a specific car you don't have on the lot currently is that it's tucked away in a "local warehouse." Sometimes dealers have to swap in cars with other dealers, and we don't want you to know that they have it and we don't

>massachusetts

Come on down?
Or shop us last?

We're in the same state and I'm kinda trying to buy a car right now too lol

>be me
>pretty well into the car business at this point
>made a few prospecting calls to someone who might be interested in something newer
>this dude has the most african name i've ever heard in my life
>i get him to come in to take a look at something used
>he likes it, wants to drive it
>he goes to his car real quick, it's whatever
>im suddenly surrounded by like 7 very african indivuduals.
>we pile into the car. thankfully it was an 8 passenger
>go for test drive, likes it
>he wants to add bodyside moldings
>we agree, bring car to bodyshop
>comes back 2 days later to pick up car
>the car is already registered under his name
>show him the car
>"i dont like it"
what do you mean you dont fucking like it?
>"the new paint doesn't match the old paint
>we put factory painted moldings on a factory painted car
>wants to look at a new car for some reason
>i have to explain to my very african friend that hes basically stuck with the car at this point
>he snaps his neck like 90 degrees and looks me straight in the eye
>he started taking off his shoe
At that point I just went inside and asked for the f&i manager
>he comes out to talk the guy down from beating me with his fucking shoe
>HIS FUCKING SHOE
>apparently these two know eachother
>i quickly learn that I've been calling this dude by his last name the entire time i've had him
>manager tells him the same exact thing i told him
>hes perfectly okay with this
>he drives off in the car and I never see him again

Boch isn't a good guy to work for, and commonwealth is a little far for me to work there, but I do work at a major franchise
whatcyha looking for?

Will offering 500$ over invoice get me the used car I want? How do I verify the invoice they show me is legit?

only new cars from the factory have an invoice. technically speaking there's no "real" value for a used car, since they're all different in some way. dealers use the nada blackbook to determine a rough ballpark for pricing, plus some other stuff

lol

Don't they get give/have a receipt for how much they purchased the used car for? Would offering $500 over their purchase price get me the car?

I think I know where you work.

Finish your peas, buddy?

>be me
>business is slow and i want some money
>complete and utter shitbox somehow rolls into a spot infront of the showroom
>old black couple walks out
>about to greet them
>man says "nahnahnah not yet, gimme a sec"
>pulls out a very nicely rolled blunt
>proceeds to smoke in front of the showroom
>desk managers are staring in awe as this dude and his wife pass a blunt back and forth in front of customers
>they walk in smelling like sour
>i proceed to shake the dudes hand when he stops me
>"man i aint gon shake yo hand i got arthritis"
>i fist bump him and his wife
>this guy has a gold chain with diamonds that spell porsche in like 180 font
>i ask him where the porsche is, it's in his yard
>all he wants is a little winter beater
>we work a cash deal
>he doesn't have the cash right now
>i tell him to come back once he gets the cash
>he comes back the next day with his wife
>this dude lays out 15k in 100s in front of me
>hes spilling lean all over the showroom tiles
>we write the deal, but he needs plates
>"imma rip the plates off the porsche for now, i want custom ones anyways"
>he mails the dealership the plates for whatever reason
>he adds a letter to drop it off at his house
>this dude lives in the ghetto
>i roll up to the house
>there's a cherry red 911 turbo droptop in the yard with no plates
>dude comes out
>theres a big bag of weed in his hand
>there's suddenly a big bag of weed in my hand
>he proceeds to give me the hardest snapping dap i've ever had

cool dude though, 10/10

dealers keep an electronic log of the "actual cash value" and base their pricing off that. They generally don't want to get that close to that number unless they feel like they have to. keep in mind you're paying for other things, not just the car

On average, how much do they underpay the price of a used car they purchase from an owner? ex. 1000$-2000$? 15-25 percent?

you probably dont, but pretty cool if you do
when we try to buy a retail worthy trade from someone we generally try to anticipate how much the shop work would be and factor that into what we want to give you. sometimes we really aren't fucking around when we tell you a car is a certain amount though

what else am i paying for?

Do you get kickbacks from the bank if you are able to get the customer a high-interest rate loan?

theres a small fee that varies between dealer to dealer and sometimes between different cars. it's there kind of like an emergency stash so that if anything happens to the car (like lot damage) they can fix it without having to take a lot of profit out of the car. it's really not that much money either, maybe a few hundred bucks
in most cases theres an interest rate markup of like 1 percent to make some back end gross, but we don't (and legally can't) throw you a ridiculous rate just to get money. usually the finance managers get a little bit of kickback from the bank for financing with them, but that's separate from what you're paying

>i never went to wendys after that
thanks for the kek

it was a life changing experience

how can someone get dealer plates from you to put on a car so they don't have to pay for car insurance?

it used to be pretty laid back with dealer plates, anyone who know someone who could pull strings would get a dealer plate to put on anything. now adays they're usually only for managers with demo vehicles. in other words, unless you own a car dealership, you can't have a dealer plate. even if you did you'd have to put it on product

nice

Are used cars that dealers purchase brought up to a certain mechanical standard? like do they change the tires or breaks if they are used or change the belts? Or are they sold as is?

>be me
>waiting outside for a customer
>lady walks up to me
>"hey is there any place i can hide? my daughters trying to call the cops on me"
>what the actual fuck
>point out the woods between the dealership and the highway in the back area
>i watch this lady walk into the woods
>never saw her again

I recently bought a car and after I sign the financial documents they tell me it was a "test drive program" car. Do you do this? What is this? I was pretty pissed because he was trying to talk me up on the online price claiming I didn't qualify for the dealership's new car incentives. Turns out none of the incentives applied to test drive program cars anyway. I think he knew this and was trying to make a few extra bucks off me. I take it as a personal insult and lack of respect for me when you pull that shit. Filed BBB claim, State attorney general claim, and FTC claim. Got them to give me $630 like a month after the deal.

what's a place to look for to buy cheap running cars to resell?

it's usually up to the dealer to determine the quality of car they want to sell, and some places might try to hide things from you. Just make sure you know what you're looking at. Also, factory certification is very worth it
what the fuck? it sounds like he was trying to explain the dealership demo program, where management rides a car around as if it were theres. those vehicles are still under warranty if they're new cars and still apply for rebates like a new car should. depending on the miles sometimes you get a bit of a break
as in restoring and flipping cars? the junk yard. don't go to a low-end used dealer unless you want to get stuck with a shitbox. in most cases, at least

What manufacturer of dealership? I recently Bought a Toyota Tundra, and the salesman was pretty damn cool

How true is the movie Suckers?

I work for a Chevy store, but that's as specific as I'm getting

never heard of it

Watch suckers

The fucking moron owners need to stop placing a $40,000 premiums on the msrp.

I wish we could do away with dealerships. Fuck yea tesla.

The SS is a great car. Sad it is so under appreciated and leaving us gear heads.

So do you sell the most of?

Hardest car to sell?

>be me
>have to stock in someone elses trade just because they have a lot going on
>walk up to this beat up Jimmy
>it smells like someone melted a horse inside
>open the door
>cigarette butts are literally pouring out of the car
>literally
>pouring out
>of the Jimmy
>there are butts in everything that can hold them
>i couldn't see the floor
>i couldn't see the gas pedal
>i have to drive this fucking Jimmy to the back of the store to be stored for wholesale
>everything is slick with tar
>i can't press the breaks down all the way because of all the butts on the fucking floor
>get back in the building
>the smell is on me
>the smell wont come off me

Please don't smoke

Yeah, do you believe dealerships offer the customer.e valuable protections like the anti-tesla douches are claiming?

Most expensive sale?

Is there anything you think your average know nothing car buyer should know? Like what kind of questions should we ask before buying a car? Also, what are some good maths and financial stuff/practices we should know? will the dealership give us lower interest rates if we ask, or is that 100percent up to the lender? can and will the dealership bend the rules to make the deal? usually at the buyers cost?

My friend works for a Toyota dealership, he said someone sold their 1987 El Camino plus cash for a FJ Cruiser. It took them over 2 years to sell it before some ghetto kid bought it. Ever had a car stay longer than 2 years?

What do you drive?

>tonight on Sup Forums's episode of "shit that didn't fucking happen"

car dealers really don't do that. we have a set amount that we're asked to sell the car for from the factory. from there, you may or may not qualify for various different rebates (college, millitary, farmers, shit like that). marking up a car like the 70s died when the internet came around, the thing you have to watch out for now is dealers advertising prices with rebates you wont qualify for
silverado, cruze, and malibu are chevys bread and butter right now. i still sell quite a few other things, and i'm a corvette specialist
the dealership is still a great place for a car if you find a good place
sold a few commercial vehicles with some 3 piece commissions. most expensive "regular" car i ever sold was a 3500 high country dually ( don't consider a loaded z06 a regular car)

What's the coolest car you had someone trade in?

Follow up question, do we have to pay the 'extra' they put on the car? like special CO2 air they put in the car tires and paint protection stuff? I was told to start haggling from the MSRP, then some car salesman told me to just offer 500$ above invoice.

You sell used or new as well? If so, what?
Work for a Ford/Lincoln dealership in SC, pretty decent money for a 24 year old. Made 6k last month before taxes. We sold 154 units, 92 used. Any good spiffs, what's your pay plan like?

Also, not sure if it was OP who posted that cigarette butt thing But FUCK people do not give a shit about their cars sometimes. Once had a guy trade in an 03 town car and had weeks and weeks worth of fast food bags with leftover shit in them in the back seat and passenger floor board. Fucking gross

How often do you sell a first car to a teen? My cousin tells me kids at his school some how get Range Rovers, Brand New Jeeps and Fucking Avalanches. My first car was a Honda Passport. And here these kids are getting luxury cars

Man you are lucky, atleast you didn't find a fetus in your car

Not OP but I also sell cars If they have rich parents or a really strong co-signer it's easy, honestly. It's all about credit and getting a bank to pay us, or cash down.

What is factory certification and how much does it usually cost and how do I get it?

always ask about the benefits of buying that car, things like warranty and other protections. you don;t want to get screwed. as far as math goes, it should be common knowledge that you can't buy a 40000 dollar car for 300 a month with no money down. interest is largely up to the lender. sometimes you might run into a little bit of rate markup, but it's usually 1% or less.
the closest thing i've seen was a used benz that stayed with us for a year
I drive an asian coupe. bought it before i got the job and i plan on driving it into the ground
i got no reason to lie my dude, but feel how ever you want
coolest trade I've gotten was a really nice camaro. coolest trade i've seen though is a seriously souped up c6 grand sport

What cars have the worst resale value?

Anything that isn't made anymore, Saturn for example. And also Mitsubishi, they're fucking tanked. Those VW with the diesel engines suck too. And honestly, most cars. Trucks, imo, are the best and Honda too, since they are known to last forever. Honestly, don't trade until you pay it off though or you'll get fucked.

How much will you give me for a 2003 Grand Cherokee with 348,390 miles on it?

How much will you give me for a 2004 4Runner with 398,789 miles on it

How often do you get ricers?

413 Massachusetts?

places won't charge you for stupid shit, it's usually just to cover up the cost of the car repair. whenever some place serves you numbers, they'll give you the msrp minus whatever rebates you can get broken down into monthlys. this is the point from which you begin to negotiate
we sell new chevys and higher-quality used cars. the pay plan is just regular salesman salary/draw. dealerships have their own bonus plans, but corporate still gives us chances to make extra money too. yes I posted the cigarette story
thats over in like california and shit where parents are rich and give their kids money to leave them alone. usually the first car i sell to teens is a lease on a cheapo car or something decent that's used
wat.
for example, we have regular used cars, then there's gm certified cars we sell. certified cars usually are backed by a special factory warranty and theyre basically the enxt best thing to buying new. keep in mind a toyota store can only certify a toyota, and so on.
dailmer-age chrysler products are pretty badly valued, same with mini and fiat. typically stuff like toyota and honda are still the highest valued. vw is poop too
depends on a lot of things. you can go someplace to get it appraised, just ask for the nada retail printout so you know its legit
thankfully not that often. heavily modified cars are better off being sold privately and not traded. modding actually removes value in most cases
greater boston area

Yeah, I did. I threw up

>be me
>company owner is at the store today
>he wants to demo the fucking z06 in the showroom
>we put his dealer plate on it and he wants to drive it out
>the sound of 650lb/ft of torque ripping out a clutch is heard throughout the showroom
>went on a 2 week vacation the next day

greentext it dude

So it would be a great time to buy a cheap vw then, yeah? Or did the adjustments they made to them fuck the engine?

Ok.

>be me car salesman
Since we buy from whole sellers and rental companies we get a lot of Jeep Compass and Patriots
>test out cars fresh from the sellers
>inspect cars to ensure they are running and what not
>open door to a Jeep Compass
>hit with a horrible odor
>check center console
>nothing
>check glove box
>nothing
> I then to go the back and lift the gate
>stench is strongest
>lift spare tire board
>dear god a rotting fetus
>ate lunch approximately 30 minutes before all this crap
>vomit all over the ground
>run and scream to my friend Enrique
>sees the saliva on my mouth and red eyes
>tell him to go see what I just saw
>same reaction, fucking pukes atleast twice as much.
>both of us mortified
>run to our manager
>tell him everything
>didn't believe us at first
>so we take him to the fetus and the pool of vomit
> lifts the board, and he begins to gag
>he calls the GM
>GM dude tells us to take the day off

the value went down because of the uncertainty of their product. yes, you could get into a vw for pretty cheap. but do you really want to?

wholesale sucks man. noice find

Yeah why not? As long as you're not counting on the resale value, then you're getting a decent car for cheap.

>next day
>Come into work
>GM is there calls me to his office
>asks about what exactly happened
>told him everything
>GM says sorry, that we shouldn't have to put up with this
>Forgive him, after all it isn't his fault
>we sell car back to whole sale
>we get new cars
>GM bro says "son you get a special discount on this new lot, so if you see anything you like let me know"
I also sell and flip homes on the side, it's something me and my wife do
>think nothing of it, as I already love my GMC Sierra too damn much
>See a really nice White FJ Cruiser
>Ask GM bro if we have it listed
>It's not
>take a look inside
>it's a 2014 with only 17k miles on it
>Ask him how much
>"Son 28 and it's yours"
Drive back later that day, take it home
