It's a manga that's been running for 20+ years now, and it's pretty incredible. One of the things that's most interesting about it, is that the author has basically reinvented himself in his style several times throughout the series, while still keeping it true to its roots. During the first 10 volumes (referred to collectively as the "Golden Age" arc), it's basically gritty 80s style manga of purely dark medieval warfare, becoming borderlined historical fiction. but in volumes 11-12+ literally hell opens up and pours itself onto earth evil dead style but in a completely serious manner. Over the next ~5 volumes you have every bit of bad in his world corrupted and risen to full blown demonic rape-fests; corrupt priests burning everyone at the stake, packs of roving goblins kidnapping women, raping and impregnating them to make more monsters, an evil god-emporer who tries to take over the world etc. It then turns into a traditional swords/sorcery fantasy where Guts assembles a team of rag-tag heroes to destroy the five God Hands of hell, one of whom was his best friend and rival during the Golden Age.

God I wish they had a decent anime. The old one was good if you ignore the poor quality. The golden age movies were okay at the best. The new one is absolute garbage and the preview for season two looks like shit. Is there no hope.

That's what we like to see.
The older one was pretty average in terms of animation quality for the time, as far as I could tell.
I'd probably say it was above average.
What killed the recent stuff is the CGI, it just makes it look awful.
The music and voice acting is pretty good, although Schierke's voice is gonna take some getting used to.
There are pacing issues but given that if you're watching it, you already know everything that happens anyway so it's sort of mitigated in my eyes, but it's no excuse.
I got over the awful animation during S1 of the new series, and ended up enjoying it a decent amount. I've been enjoying S2 so far, and I'd say it's a little better overall.
But I wholeheartedly agree, Berserk can't seem to catch a break in the anime department as of late.
There's always next time, I'm sure.
Yeah I enjoyed ep 1 and I hope later episodes answer some questions/suspicions. Haven't gotten around to watching them yet though.
I'm single and I've never had a girlfriend, but maybe one day!
