>Sombreros, like the cowboy hats invented later, were designed in response to the demands of the physical environment. The concept of a broad-brimmed hat worn by a rider on horseback can be seen as far back as the Mongolian horsemen of the 13th century.[2] In hot, sunny climates hats evolved to have wide brims, which provided shade. The Spanish developed a flat-topped sombrero, which they brought to Mexico. It was modified by the vaquero into the round-crowned Mexican sombrero and poblano.[3] Although sombrero is usually taken to refer to the traditional Mexican headwear, the term sombrero predates this item of clothing, and is and has been applied to several differing styles of hat, since it is the actual word for hat in Spanish.

That's a meme sombrero that you don't see outside football stadiums, this one though is still used even by southerns that have never seen anything related to the American """"culture""" in their lives.
Connor Walker
The only reason Cowboys are considered American is because that's what the world views them as.
Michael Campbell
>The Spanish developed a flat-topped sombrero, which they brought to Mexico
This is not even a sombrero. Goes to show how little you know of the topic.

So in short, my Chilean friend, the equestrian traditions that the moors brought to Spain, which in turn they took from Persians, EVOLVED in North MEXICO to become the cowboys you know.
Sombrero just means "hat" in Spanish. Any hat, not just the meme one the American posted.
Ayden Allen
>Sombrero just means "hat" in Spanish. You can't use your lack of knowledge to decapitate the wide variety of hats that exist on the planet; and their origins.
This is a sombrero, not a cowboy hat.

Mexico has no claim to cowboys or even cowboy hats.

Again, modified in Mexico and adopted in America.
Mate, sombrero, in Spanish, means hat. That one is a sombrero charro. But the sombreros cowboys wear in Mexico, (not sombreros charros), are also called sombreros, because sombrero is just the word for "hat".
Why do you think that wiki page doesn't even exist in Spanish?
Hunter Fisher
actually this is true

Sombrero vaquero, sombrero de copa, sombrero charro, sombrero de hongo, etc. All of those are types of sombreros, including the cowboy hat (sombrero vaquero).
He is sperging because in American english "sombrero" means "Mexican hat" (which is supposed to be the sombrero charro, but as always, americans never put the right thing, so it is not even that, but a sombrero we don't even use).
Cowboy hats in Spanish are called "sombreros vaqueros" or just "sombrero". And they are worn in Northern Mexico, where they were developed, not Spain, not USA, but Northern Mexico. What you know as "sombrero"in english is called "sombrero charro" in Spanish.
The english word is not the same as the Spanish word. God damn.
