well at the very beginning you should probably cut down some trees and build a little house for yourself near the spawn point, after that you can either explore the surface for chests, or just dive into the first cave you find and start digging for ore

you do all your crafting in your inventory, its on the left side of the screen, if you're ever curious about how to craft stuff, take any material to your guide npc and hand it to him, he'll show you every crafting recipe that uses it
and to solve that darkness issue, you'll want to kill some slimes on the surface, use the gel they drop and some wood to craft torches that you can place for light

yep, bonfires are nice to have cause standing near one increases your health regen, also you should craft a workbench if you havent yet, standing near a workbench allows you to craft alot more things than you can make just by hand

forgot to mention that when asking the guide for crafting recipes, he also tells you what crafting station you need for the recipe
