if ur a nerd

it's free

If ur hardware supports it

to piss microsoft off,
reason enough,

Any reason to use mac or Windows?

if you cant afford Windows or you are just a tin foil conspiracy theorist against windows

other then that, you get less features (game wise) then windows, so you cant play all games on steam

if you need to use certain programs professionaly that are only available for those softwares

If you like getting spied on by microsoft, apple or google, no need to change.

Freedom and privacy

>computers are only for gaymen shit

stallman get out

No, not unless you're a programmer and have a specific reason to use Linux, such as bash or having a server-like environment.

I run ubuntu on desktop and mint on laptop. My world is better, there is plenty of games and you can run steam. Is going to be weird at first but is while you learn it. Commit to it and you will grow a 3rd testicle.

U mad wingoy

...

I use linux for the following reasons:

1. It's free

2. There are no restrictions like the ones you see on Mac / Windows

3. Nobody is spying on you

4. Programming is easier - no need to configure path and stuff

5. You can get a distro for literally any specific thing you're trying to do (from privacy to doing graduate work in astronomy).

6. It works on almost any hardware. I have 10+ year old laptops with mechanical hard drives that still work great running linux lite.

>inb4 muh games tho

7 setting up a pyrate station is simple as with built in easy to configure open vpn

>muh games
steam works inn loonix & valve has there own distro

installing shit is ezy

TIL

It's actually very weird. I'm a software engineer and every single person I ever worked with is a fucking mac fanboy and I have no idea why.

they appreciate shit that just fucking works.
>no missing dependencies

To quit paying the richest people on earth to turn around and sell your data to advertisers or give it to the government so they can spy on you and make sure you're not going to help overthrow the oligarchy they protect.

What she means if you are too stupid to create a .txt file or download the required files to make a program run stick with macshit.

it's really not that time consuming.
>a morning installing it, if you are retarded.
>an hour installing packages
>the rest of your life tweaking things the make everything minutely more better

If by "just fucking works" you mean can't install the most recent version of MySQL and frequently has hardware incompatibilities. Also, you can configure dependencies manually.

I'm serious about this. Everytime I'm at work or back when I was in school, we always have / had to wait on someone with a macbook because their shit wasn't compatible or didn't work.

Just own up to the fact that you're paying inflated prices for an OS that is marginally better than Windows sometimes.

>no autistic circle jerk forums

Have you met mac users?

Every common distribution has already many essential tools installed (or can be installed within seconds) that takes forever to install and configure under Windows and still does not work properly.

Going terminal is terminal.

>that feel when I'm clicking download links on a porn site and get that pop-up that says there's a virus on my system and shows a progress bar and a window scanning all those directories in C:/windows/system32 instead of dev/sda1 and it's telling me to call microsoft customer support

>pacman -Syu
>rip xserver

if you have an old pc it runs pretty fast which is nice.

have you posted on bbs.arch?
>duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuur
>IDK wat problem iz user
>maybe you should try help you are self instead of wasting my thyme
>oh loooookyz this is thread is over an year old. I'll make it as a close

this has never happend to me

No, I don't browse linux forums because I rarely need support for everything because Linux doesn't fucking break all the time.

This might be a surprise to a lot of the people here, but it used to be understood that Linux was the OS you were going to use if you were ever going to do any serious computing or programming. Mac showed up and started to become popular in maybe the mid / late 2000s, and everyone jumped on board.

They're overpriced.
They're selling your data to the government / corporations.
They have major compatibility issues.
They're bloated.
They restrict your ability to do things. If you're a dev, they'll often restrict the ability to do your job.

Mac is a trend. Hopefully it dies soon.

so linuxfags, on my laptop I deleted windows and put linux, put everytime I start it up it always asks if I want to try running windows and it fails. so I have to go back and load xubuntu to start it. is there a way to make it so it just loads into linux?

Been using linux since 12 years and I'm trying right now to upgrade my main computer (Kubuntu 15.10) to the latest Kubuntu 17.04. I can't manage to boot with my live usb stick, fuck this shit !!!
--> stop loading with a "no init found"
fuck fuck fuuuuuck

in before Ubuntu is shit

For programming, the underlying OS is starting to matter less and less - just spin up a vm or use Docker directly on top of the OS.

If you call yourself a programer and aren't using containers... just fucking do it.

I think you need to go into BIOS and turn off secure BIOS or something. I forget how it works, but later versions of Windows (since VISTA) try to make it harder to uninstall the OS and put on a new one.

Well holy shit. I'm doing an upgrade right now of Kubuntu 16.10 to 17.04. I recommend doing that kind of upgrade clean from live boot cuz doing it as dist-upgrade might break. It's happened to me lots of times. Its risky to do upgrades that far in the past without a clean install.

I've been using Linux at work since 2010. No question that Windows is still needed to get some things done, so thats why my computer always has a desktop dedicated to a Windows 7 VM, so I can switch between Linux and Windows with a flick of the mouse. Linux offers some seriously powerful productivity tools for networking, programming, modeling, and management, not to mention how easy it is to make a quick new tool that might not already exist by scrapping together some pre-made command tools and libraries. In Windows the third party support and tools are almost exclusively dominated by Microsoft making it much more difficult to solve problems without hoping someone has already built a program to do exactly what you need or just settling with a lesser approach.

And yes, while it's annoying that Linux needs more work to get it to do some things that Windows or Mac does out-of-the-box, neither of them give you the kind of powerful control of your own computer as Linux. When you use windows, you OWN your computer which for people who have lived inside Windows all their lives won't understand what that means.

I gotta be real honest user no im not mad, that looks fucking shit

Linux is a minority, for a just purpose.
It takes a while to learn, especially if you're coming from Windows or Mac OSx
Why use it, though? Freedom from spying (*cough* win10 *cough*) That should be reason enough.

This user is half right.
Just mash F12/Del at startup and fuck about with settings until it either sets on fire or you get the desired effect.
You can't go far wrong... apart from the fires, they can be troublesome but if you piss on it, you should be golden.

>if ur a nerd
I'll never understand this kind of thinking. "Oh, look I so stupid I'm better than you." You need to kill yourself before you can reproduce.

>Any reason to use Linux?
Any windows beyond 7 sucks donkeydicks, but you still want to use your hardware.

>everytime I start it up it always asks if I want to try running windows and it fails
You mean the
>Start Windows Normally
>Start Windows in Safe Mode
thing?
Go into BIOS settings and make sure you don't have Secure Boot or UEFI turned on.

> Nobody is spying on you
Read this and then let us know if you still believe that.

tl;dr:
Nefarious people can embed code in common compilers like GCC that will do things like include a backdoor in the "login" binary. The code also reinserts itself in GCC when GCC is compiled from source. Once it's in the binaries of GCC that are used to build GCC, the original C source code for the backdoor can be removed, and nobody will be the wiser.

>then windows

the appropriate word is 'than'. than is a comparative. then denotes a sequence in time.

ie: you are dumber THAN me. or you suck my dick THEN I suck yours ;^)

I rage quit so often when using Microsoft software. It is made for the dumb people. Always gets into my way.
I use Debian Linux at work and gentoo Linux at home. Works really well. I could not work so efficiently without Linux.

Honestly, windows works fine for most people.

I occasionally try Linux because I love the fact that they didn't add artificial limitations to it. Example, I wanted to make an NTFS drive FAT 32 for use on my PS 3. Trying to do it on Windoze was a pain, and I'd be forced to use some shady third party program. On an Ubuntu Live disk I just did it in 5 minutes.

On the other hand, if there are issues on Linux, don't expect it to get fixed any time soon. There are threads going back several years where people are begging for workarounds in order to shut off the Bluetooth which for some reason autostarts. There's no fucking way to do it easily, and the help sections are mostly cocksucking nerds saying "whyd u wanna do that?" It's just not user friendly once you stumble upon a problem.

Did you put that on your FB page user.

Beat me to it.

>more
>better

The normie that made this post doesnt know that Mac OS and windows 10 spy the fuck outta you. Just setup wireshark and see for yourself.

This type of shits been going on before the internet. The new shit is you buy their crap and its preloaded and precoded to spy on you.

We need to set laws in place to keep us safe!

don't be mad m8. you learnt something today!

> not using one of the BSDs

Use OpenSuSE, Fedora, Gentoo or Arch.

Debian and its ilk are shit.

I was agreeing with you.

Spying can still happen on any computer or network. The thing is that with Linux it doesn't come bundled in the OS and expected.

Every device you own is spying on you. The laws will never be changed because the three letter agencies get huge erections over all that personal data. In fact, it's far more likely that in the future it will be illegal to try to block Windows spyware at the router.

In other words, you get a false sense of security. Everyone knows Windows spies on you, and probably OSX as well. If you use Linux, you're already on a list for using subversive technology, and the NSA is working their asses off to get a backdoor into Linux, assuming they haven't succeeded already.

This doesn't seem unlikely. They have at times tried to ban email encryption. And with the rate they are trying to import muzzies, they might just achieve full surveillance sometime in the near future.

A reason to use linux would be that you can tweak you install to best suit your system.

So - for performance.

Will you faggots stop whining about been spied on? They're gonna spy on you no matter what, learn to live with it.
I just spy on them back, they have more secrets than I do.

No, you have more control to prevent yourself from being spied on. Obviously the government is not only working to backdoor linux, but to spy on the network infrastructure you use to access the internet. The point is that if you start with Windows or Mac, you're starting off with even hardware that's already compromised and you're paying too much for it. With Linux you have a fighting chance if you know what you're doing.

I mean, seriously, even insinuating that Mac or Windows has the privacy standards that Linux does is quite laughable.

This attitude ruined America.

>This attitude ruined America.
Fuck you! Burgerboy I ain't from that shithole.
If you had an ounce of the intelligence you think you have, you'd have looked at the clock on the pic and realized that straight away.

Oooor... Its military time? Ever think of that fuckboy.

Using Linux is like using Tor. Sure, technically, it's more secure and resistant to spying, but the very fact that you're using it makes you stand out as a person of interest for enhanced spying.

Android > Limbo VM> Sarge debian

linux on android

Brah, he only said that attitude ruined America. Not that you are in America.

Not gonna lie, I got a little triggered with the network engineer bit. Too many are just paper tigers though, dont actually know a damn thing. Pisses me off, it makes the rest of us look bad

(Cumulus ftw)

>Can't count to 24

>UEFI
can't turn that off

Which is why linuxfags should appreciate a larger userbase more, instead of bashing Ubuntu.

Plenty of Americans use Zulu time "fuck boy."

Also if you aren't from the US that statement doesn't apply to you.

>Donuts, nuclear bombs and niggers had nothing to do with it?

I don't think that's true at all, nor do I think it's a good comparison.

When an ISP sees that your traffic is encrypted, they don't know that it's encrypted via tor. They just can't see it what you're doing. TOR hasn't been compromised so much as it has become mainstream so people try to use it without knowing anything about networking and then get into trouble.

The directory of Tor nodes is public knowledge. If you're sending encrypted traffic to one of those addresses, it's pretty obvious you're using Tor.

Also - how much you wanna bet the NSA runs or has compromised more then half of the TOR nodes?

And to the whole "hurr durr they cant tell im using tor im l33t hax0r" - you can literally buy appliances that recognize TOR, along with other application traffic, no problem. The amount of these middleboxes you go through on the internet is insane

I actually agree with the other user. Hide in plajn sight and they're less likely to look at you.
I don't think linux is a trigger though, plenty of people are poor.
The point is, if you need to hide something you need to be sat in mcdonalds on a laptop you bought for cash.
Fucktards think they're safe and then go and log into their FB on the very next tab.

Your ISP doesn't really care if you're using Tor, but those fuckers at the NSA intercepting all your network traffic might.

So much this.

All about that metadata / correlation.

There's a pretty decent chance that's true. You could easily run half the world's Tor nodes for a few million bucks a year. Of course if it is true you'll never hear about it, since they want to keep their honeypot. Anyone caught that way will go through parallel construction before trial.

Are you saying Americans don't understand 24hr format? Because if that's your argument, it makes no sense

I think you missed the point user.
TOR is for pedos who don't wanna use their own IP and obviously you can't jack to kiddy porn in mcdonalds.
If you TOR you pedo.... or hiring a hitman.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

No you autizmo! My argument is the fact that I'm 2/3 of the planet away.
Jesus weeps.

Please go away

don't you have free software to write?

yes
/thread

I've just realised this dosen't make sense but on the flip side it's still not as autistic as what the other user said.

If you don't know what you're talking about then you really shouldn't post. And you're a clueless fuck to be clear, holy shit

Stallman hasn't written any useful free software in years. He's too busy cozying up to autocratic regimes and eating toe fungus to worry about that noise.

Give it a break Richieboy. Get some kids and do something useful.

And this is why only autistic neckbeards use Linux

Nerd

If you hate windows and don't want to get ripped off buying a mac in order to work in a *nix-ish environment.
