Believe it or not see that this week is what kicked me to give an overhaul.
Glad you asked!
At home I have my Raspberry Pi hooked up to my USB hard drive acting as the source of truth (side fact: it's also the jump point into my home network from outside). I drop new photos in an inbox directory, and they get renamed to _.* and sorted onto the Pi in a Year->Month->JPG/NEF structure. A much more manageable-size version is also created in a separate mirror structure called Thumbs (because the normal files are HUGE). The Photos structure is synced up to an Amazon S3 bucket for safekeeping, while the Thumbs one is synced to my server running a simple photo gallery.
All of this is automated by my script, which also includes things like being able to pass a list of file names to pull images out of the structure into separate albums.
