Les

Paul McCartney imo.

Geddy Lee is the most talented member in Rush for playing bass as well as he does on top of lead vocals and Moog pedals.

John Entwistle

Scott LaFaro

...

Any reason for thinking McCartney is better? I can't see it

These

Also Flea. The slapping is cool and all, but when he plays normally, he really provides great structure for the song.

Chris Squire of Yes

Randy Bradbury of Pennywise

...

More tasteful bass arrangements imo. His basslines are unforgettable, but not as athletic as Geddy Lee or Les Claypool. Plus Paul's bass tone is my favorite out of all bass players (particularly on the songs that he plays a Rickenbacker)

Stanley Clarke. Funk and Jazz fusion require an amazing amount of technical ability

It depends on the genre or style of music. A virtuoso heavy metal bass player would have a hard time playing latin rythms.

Thin Lizzy is great too.

I'd go with Bootsy though.

Very good choice

percy jones is a GOAT
correct
incorrect

this thread makes me realize that dropping 2000 dollars on a rickenbacker was probably a good idea

jaco

i'm not saying he's not a good bassist--he's just far from the best

>Paul McCartney is not valid answer

Hang yourself. He was also the first popular bassist to play a 4000 series Rickenbacker.

see

i want to say obligatory les but weymouth can pull some mad plucks

i think his basslines are comparatively boring and trite
dude can't write a song, let alone a bassline
weymouth is mad underrated

All of these are patrician but let's not forget Phil Lesh, Sting, and Mike Watt.

Billy "Bass" Nelson

DUDE! LEMMY!

>i think his basslines are comparatively boring and trite
dude can't write a song, let alone a bassline

pic related is you

How much of it is the nigh-telepathic link he shared with Bill Evans, though?

youtube.com/watch?v=knzFrkdV3ok

Km Deal

This guy

Uh, Weymouth was replaced by studio bassists for most of the Eno era. Shit-tier.

Is that the only bassist you know?

This is the only right answer.
People would break their fingers to play like him.
Hendrix of the bass

>le epic wacky fusion bass
unironically fuck off

John Entwistle

even if you don't like his music, you have to admit that jaco seriously pushed the instrument forward and had some of the most ridiculous chops of any bass player ever

Lothar Meid

5/10 bait made me reply

Miyako Kaneda from 385 and Bleach is seriously in the running.

...

>nobody mentions the legend Mike Dirnt

Ok, I guess I will.

me

not the best but definitely deserves more recognition for his playing outside of metal circlejerk lists
hell he deserves recognition for that undulating sexual sliding part on unsuccessfully coping alone, so visceral

are you like, 40? get off this website

Phil Lynnot's talents lay more in song-writing, but he does have my favorite bass tone

I'd say "Don't make me pick between DiGiorgio and LaPointe!"

But y'all just gon' hate anyway.

[citation needed]

Paul is great musician, but not much of a bassist. Fucking incredible musician, though.

Not the best. But I feel like this guy is pretty damn underrated for what he did.

Best middle ground of musically and athleticism. Good fucking choice, user.

Him and mononeon are the GOAT.

since were talking almost strictly electric, this guy is really the only correct answer.

i'm not saying he's the best but the bassist in coheed and cambria is really underrated

>Mynigga.jpg

not the current bassist, but Mic Todd was great.

Best upright bassist by far.

youtube.com/watch?v=kPk_XadXs6Q
Skip to 4:55 or so, Juan Alderte is great

What the fuck, Jaco is the goddamned king. Fusion isn't even wacky, he's hardly fucking wacky.

You're just a pleb who got fed up with the fact that some people like weird music and you're too stupid to get it, so instead of saying "I don't like overly busy and amelodic music.", which is a valid position to hold, you just shit on anything at all jazzy. You're a stupid mong who can't into anything but nursery rhymes.

>Jaco
>weird music

desu

literally just about to post him
good taste but also fuck you

lol, are you in high school

He had easily one of the most unique, thick bass tones of all time. My shit dropped so hard when I found out all the fuzz and thickness in Type O came from Steele.

Wasn't the guitarist that wrote all their basslines or something though?

I agree also Gordon Maokes from Bloc Party and Young Legionnaire

I have always enjoyed AFI's bass, not up there technically with Jaco, Clarke, Flea, Thin Lizzy, Entwistle and Giddy but definitely different and fun to listen to

mm no I don't think so
I feel like I remember Paul Banks saying something about how Carlos' bass would always be the structure of the song and he would go from there
I prob don't know what I'm talking about tho

No one posting Jack Bruce? baka

Common knowledge. Covered up bigtime. Hell, I bought weed from one of the studio bassists in Nashville in the late-80's.

I'll add, why do you think they needed Percy Jones for the live albums?

In fact, can you name one bassist on this list so far that needed another bassist for the live shows?

miss him, interpol will never be the same.

>Sting
based taste

>i think his basslines are comparatively boring and trite dude can't write a song, let alone a bassline

Oscar Pettiford desu

Love his work

we can tell you don't play an actual instrument

Victor

Correction, Busta Cherry Jones.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busta_Jones

youtube.com/watch?v=B-_PC6TlIhs

>Victor Wooten hasn't been mentioned

>i think his basslines are comparatively boring and trite. dude can't write a song, let alone a bassline

A lot of great bassists haven't been mentioned.

A lot of mediocre bassists have.

As a bassist, I find it weird how much value people place on playing in the pocket - it's literally our job at least 90% of the time.

>Mike Watt
please let me suck you off

>no John Paul Jones

The fuck, guys.

Other than that, this is a good thread, besides the fuck calling McCartney a shit player.

No love for Billy Sheehan?

youtube.com/watch?v=30YT0cG2EkE (it's a bit wanky... he's a bit of a freak)

>hell he deserves recognition for that undulating sexual sliding part on unsuccessfully coping alone, so visceral
nigga u gay

>it's literally our job at least 90% of the time.
Then you understand the value you dummy

youtube.com/watch?v=jYRvGr8Yxnc

>Paul McCartney
>can't write a song

Pete Way or John Deacon.
Listen to Dragon Attack or Liar by Queen and tell me John Deacon isn't amazing.

Listen to Boogie or Shake It About by UFO and tell me Pete Way isn't amazing.

This guy knows what he is talking about.

...

Yeah UFO had great basslines. What's your opinion on Queen's bass stuff?

I'm not the biggest fan of his music, but it's really hard to argue against him being the GOAT. He really left his mark on the instrument in a way no other one person has.

>Read OP
>Wonder how many posts down Les will be

My nigga

this. bass guitar on rock would be nothing wasn't it for jack bruce. rip

Gary Willis but nobody is going to mention him
