I'm pretty sure Kathleen Kennedy was the first person to say it was going to be a Band of Brothers esque war movie.
At the end of the day, it's Star Wars and it's Disney. It was always going to be marketable and intended for children, so don't act like it was never going to be a hard R, gritty war drama.

Disney may not take risks but their movies are usually pretty entertaining.
