Hey! Can I ask you something? Why would you say 僕と一緒になって泳いでくれた and not just 僕と一緒に泳いでいた ? Specifically, what's the purpose of the なる verb in this and what difference does it make, if there is any, between the two?

Checked to see how up to date the links were and it とつくにの少女 is due for a physical tank release around the 10th while リューシカ・リューシカ is up to 10 volumes. Only the first 5 volumes appear to be scanned or ripped so I'll end up picking the remained from rakuten and making an updated mirror link for the CoR to use, depending on the quality of the digital versions.
So if you are looking to read either of those two, maybe read ふらいんぐうぃっち and 黒 first so the other two will be up to date by the time you get to them.

Emphasis on the fact that someone/some other persons involved joined "me/myself" in swimming. They weren't just swimming with me, they [came] to swim with me, as a personal favour. It could be the different between going for a swim at the beach with friends or simply swimming between the flags at the beach with other people.

Ah, I see. So くれる has to be used with なる in this situation? If I just got rid of the なる, shouldn't it be the same, with the くれる meaning doing sth as a favor? I mean, if I just said 僕と一緒になって泳いでいた or 僕と一緒に泳いでいてくれた it wouldn't be the same, right?

一緒になる seems to be a set expression too. It's probably an abstract take on the なる definition discussed yesterday of "a change in a form or condition that is different from what it was previously".

As you can see, it can be used objectively (ie without the gratitude bent) in these examples:

I think it has a more "end up doing something" flavor to it, maybe there's a relation with it being not an usual activity, like these examples where men and women meet (which they wouldn't do otherwise), the specialists teaming up for a bigger project, the folks planning a special celebration.

And the swimming sentence posted by Jardani also implies going out of your way to swim.

Looking at those interpretations, There doesn't necessarily seem to be an emphatic quality built into the phrase itself. However some interpretations are no doubt going to be reserved for special moments, like the 2nd interpretation "to get married".

I've ben thinking of something like this, the problem is my sentence is a translation of a lyric and the lyric in no way says that it is something out of the usual or something that became like that or whatever...truth be told, the original lyric seems odd in English too, but that's just my appreciation of it. "(I jumped into the river and what did I see? Black eyed angels) swam with me". Don't know if that past simple is ok there, as it seems like a perfect action...or continuous, but nevermind that.

I think I understand your dilemma and I think it's addressed in this little part in the DoJG. The Japanese concept of one receiving favor is more broad than it is in English, and will need to be expressed outright in more scenarios.

On second thought, considering Radiohead's lyrics, I can understand that. Modern lyrics are shrouded in abstraction from the get go, and not just an arty band like Radiohead, but really modern pop music in general. But speaking of Radiohead I recall something simple like "Let down and hanging around"; only someone with strong grasp of casual English speech is really going to "get" what that means, "I'm disappointed and bored". Obviously the mood of the music helps, but you can't fine-tune an understanding from that alone. And if Japan doesn't share such expressions, or even a similar one, a straight translation can be pure gobbledygook. The more abstraction, the harder it is to understand, and that's not even counting being in a different language. Something like this, a song by post punk band Totsuzen Danball, would defy complete comprehension even from native speakers:

Personally, for the sake of studying Japanese, this is why I stick with things like blog posts, reviews, articles, etc right now: their function is by and large to "inform", rather than to "express".

He lived there until I believe his late teenage years, so it's most likely pretty solid. Interestingly, he derives no pride from it, and instead to his French comprehension, since he actually had to make a conscious effort to master it. ;)

Practically speaking, what does 手法 mean? I know it's "technique," but when I search for it, I get tons of results for forex sites, and the images are almost all graphs.

I'm seeing a broad array of different "methods" of things via google image: massages, card tricks, instrument performance, etc. Maybe the graphs are representing different "techniques" or "methods" of something? It's a Chinese compound word, and a lot of the images displayed are Chinese sites, too.

That's simply a matter of specificity to avoid ambiguity, not unlike the debate about the oxford comma. Although I have used the oxford comma for papers I would hand in, yet I have never used it on Sup Forums, and have never seen anyone use it on here either. As i guess you know, yet is a conjunction. So you have two separate clauses on each side. You can, sometimes, omit a verb on the second one if it's used in the first one(I think this is what you wanted to do). But your first clause expresses a state of being(Of being a productive canuck) whereas in the second one apparently you wanted to modify "Being productive" with "not as selfishly as ...". They are not the same verb/action("Being productive" ~= "being a canuck"), so you can't omit it in the second clause. By specifying "yet not as selflessly productive as", you are mentioning it so it's correct.
It's not just to avoid ambiguity, it's incorrect. Now get over it.

You're the ones trimming the fat, because you're forgetting what I was replying to. The guy had asked me if I was a particular canuck. Same as in japanese, this context is important to clarify what was meant by my reply. I am productive as a canuck, but not as selflessly as the other canuck referred to in his question.

I'm "Pedantic-BRchan" and I must agree, there is literally nothing wrong with changing your word order if the whole thing adds up in the end. Argentina failed to notice the term could be referring to "productivity", and I myself had trouble reading the original statement at first, but it was a reader-side mistake if you look into it a bit deeper.

Flexibility of the mind should we practice if other languages intend we learn; by bunches of butchered and incoherent sentences the Internet is plagued with, but reason to extinguish dynamic phrasing don't let that be.
