I find arm / leg hair is the most difficult thing as I can't figure out how to separate the background colour from the hair itself so im left with a horrible mess around all exposed flesh.

when you're using layer masks, you should be changing the size of the brush as well as the hardness. You need crisp areas, soft areas, you can even use a different shaped brush to cut away at the image like a hedge trimmer on bushes.
