I fractured my hip. Can't move without excruciating pain. In hospital. How fucked am I?

No idea. Hope you heal soon.

Thanks user. At least I get morphine?

how old are you? if you are 50+ and female, you are fucked...hip fractures in older ppl are associated with a high mortality rate, not from the fx itself, but its a predictor of overall health status. if you are young, then not that fucked, prolly will have nerve damage tho, but itd be like u wont have feeling in a certain area of hip... how u fx it?

How are you in excruciating pain? They would have you on an IV drip of morphine if that was the case.

It's not fixed yet. They need to do a CAT scan in the morning to see if I need surgery. I am 32/F, decent health otherwise. Just a really bad fall down some steps on to concrete.

It's not enough Morphine. 4mg sub.

not fucked at all. its a routine thing. you're going to be in bed few days. afterwards they will instantly get you up on your legs after operation. noone treats it with 6 weeks of immobilization.
beginning is very painful. after the operation it will get better very fast. you'll get some pain killers like Piritramide which is pretty stong but not quite the morphine level. after a few months to years they will put the metal out of your bones with a second operation.
Depending on the specific case it can obviously differ but thats the usual thing that happens with broken hips.

Source: i work in a german hospital on a station thats specializing in accidents, traumas, etc. old ppl breaking their hips n shit.

Thanks. That makes me feel a lot better.

hmm, that mustve been a serious fall then. id assume u arent post menopause yet so your bones should be relatively skrong. when all this is fixed up make sure you do weighted exercise, females are at risk for osteoporosis naturally, gotta lift weights to keep the bones skrong. hope you feel better and have full recovery!

I already lift regularly. It was a really bad fall. Face is busted up bad too. Non serious cuts, scrapes and bruises all over body.

if he asks you if you want an operation or not i'd suggest u say yes. its a very small risk and a lot less time in hospital.
dont worry too much about it (if your healthcare is covered lol) and chill in hospital. if you feel the slightest amount of pain, tell someone that pain is on and they will turn it off ;)
then chill and watch tv until they say u can go home i guess

Non menopausal

bro osteoporosis is a thing for really really old people. you're really unlucky if you're having that before your sixties. you're just making people panic here really.

Maybe you should ask the doctor that instead of a bunch of anonymous autists from the internet.

In Canada so surgery is free. I will say yes though if they ask. I wanna get out of her as quick as possible. Thanks for the information.

It's 4am. I won't see the specialist till morning. I am just kinda scared and wanted to talk to be honest.

also protip: if you choose to be an annoying patient and make extra work for the carers they will do less for you. mostly very empathic persons that will just love to help a nice person. also if you're a dick to one carer, all the others will know, also from the other shifts as every little detail that happened during the day for each patient is told to the next shift in the beginning/end of shifts

I have been as nice as possible. I kinda screamed a bit and cried when they transferred me to my bed cause my hip twisted by accident.
I thank them for everything, even just checking my vitals. I know they are overworked and understaffed

Broke my acetabulum a while back. 4months non weight baring. Lost range of motion and can't run as fast as before and can't jump as high. That was 5yrs ago. I'm at about 75% off where I was before accident. Not getting any better. Good luck with it surgery and rehab

Then bitch and moan until you get more.

dafuk did u do

Enjoy your time in bed/chair. Probably gonna take some months.

Not getting any more till I see the specialist in the morning as 4mg is all the ER doctor prescribed. I am intending to ask for enough to keep me in la-la land.

You're fucked. It will always hurt to walk, changes in air pressure and humidity will cause you agony.

But, at least maybe you can walk again. It can get replaced.

t. wheelchair user with fucked hips

Sorry to hear that user. I wish you the best with your ongoing recovery as well.

you're not supposed to be invisible just nice. its not helping the staff if you dont show any sign of discomfort if there is. dont get me wrong :D dont call for every little thing but if there is a necessity definitely do. dont try and do shit alone that you're not secure with esp with a broken leg. had it so many times that patients were sitting on the floor not even able to call for help anymore. you'll just make extra work like that. just ring the bell when you need to move until you're safe doing it yourself

Your lawyer. Your next best friend.
Get photos of where you fell. If in mall, get lawyer to subpeona the accident register.

Just how drunk were you?

If you are in pain, you can ask for pain relief. It wont affect a CAT, only anesthesia. And a hip op will not be a priority surgery item anyway, mainly because you need a osteopath specialist.

Oh, bull.
My boss is 50+ has had both replaced, no issues.
If you are reporting your experience, then you should go your surgeon for neg.

I'm currently waiting for a physiotherapist. Waited almost a year and a half for a fucking CAT scan, another 6 months for an osteopath.

I'm in New Brunswick, Canada. I really hope OP is not in NB, the fucking healthcare is SHIT in this province.

pretty fucked m8, fractured mine a year ago and still can't move without pain

come to sunny Australia then.

I should have moved to the Gold Coast when I had a chance.

Could be a year down the drain. Sorry to hear it user, have a speedy recovery

It is time to live the dream and stop trying. Get a wheelchair and enjoy not having to do anything ever again.

>Get a wheelchair and enjoy not having to do anything ever again.

Enjoy never going anywhere else, you mean? Enjoy losing your job, having your income cut to almost nothing and your costs jump. Yeah, this wheelchair bullshit is great.

How could you lose your job? In EU, employers are encouraged to employ disabled people. Firing someone because disability means you lose your prestige. Also, all public buildings are required to have cripple aid.

The movement is really important after the surgery.

Has op and the author on the post I'm replying to considered massage therapy as part of her ongoing rehab?

For our German friend, is massage therapy used in your setting?

>Also, all public buildings are required to have cripple aid.

I'm in Canada, and if this were true I'd still have my job. I got fired because I could not get a doctor to provide a diagnosis. My first doctor sent me to a retired specialist, who requested some tests and then I waited for the tests until my first doctor left; then I got a Paki who did not speak proper English or French, got a restraining order put on me (I want treatment, not more fucking painkillers).

Yeah, I need to sue someone. Who though, my first doctor? The healthcare corporation (it is privatized here in New Brunswick)?

There is a severe lack of doctors and equipment here, which is why my treatment has been so shitty.

how did it happen ?
