I don't like anime, Sup Forums

I've tried, I've really, really tried. No matter how many different animes I've been recommended, I just can't get into them. I watch plenty of western animation and I really enjoy it. I just can't seem to get into anime.

There are a few animes I've been able to watch that I actually enjoyed, but only in small doses. When I was a kid, I really looked forward to Blue Sub no.6 on CN after school, while that lasted.. and I like FLCL alright. Macross is cool, I guess. As far as full-length films go, I've seen Spirited Away and Nausicaa and enjoyed them both. I've even watched and embarrassingly enjoyed Azumanga Daioh, but that was when I was single. I've been married for several years now and doubt I could get away with watching anything similar ever again. I don't think I'd even be able to stomach anything having to do with school girls or panties anymore. I don't understand that shit and I never will. I was into AD for the jokes. It's weird to get boners to cartoons that you know sweaty Japanese men have drawn and I simply won't do it. I tried very hard to watch Attack on Titan and Kill la Kill, didn't like either of them..

What's wrong, Sup Forums? Teach me to like anime. Am I just watching the wrong genre? Is Evangelion worth a try? I liked Akira, but everyone liked Akira..

the one you posted a picture of is a great anime ,Great Teacher Onizuka, have you seen it?

>I don't like anime
>I save anime pictures
another gr8 b8

Yes, you have been watching shit, go watch something from 80s and 90s i guess that would be more up your alley

Watch JoJo's Bizzare Adventure or Shingeki No Kyojin

Woops didnt read attack on titan part
Try Gintama
My cheeks hurted from smiling afterbwwtching that
But its 350+ episodes

onizuka!

Eva is great

The plot makes fuck all for sense, it's just a character piece that turns into a very fulfilling and intense psychotrip, one of the best shows I've ever seen

Make sure if you watch it, you omit the last two episodes and watch the movie end of Evangelion which is the real ending, the last 2 episodes were garbage cuz of the studio shutting down

No, I just think the picture is funny.
See above.
Like what?
I've been thinking of giving JoJo's a shot, not sure about the other one.
>350+ episodes
Jesus man I have a life to live.

Try Black Lagoon.

I didn't like Akira.

watch fucking detective conan OP

Plus you like flcl, Eva is the company that made that

This is a good recommendation op

JoJo is life man, I'm not normally big into anime but JoJo just fucks me right up in a good way

Stiens;gate

Jojo is a blast, real silly

Samurai Champloo and cowboy bebop are fucking gold, short and incredible, just well stylized and fun (well, Champloo is. Bebop is a bit darker)

...

Try Deathnote?

>western animation

Anime is different from western media in one big way, tonal shifting.

Most western media attempts to hold a consistent tone throughout the show, to the point where writing classes and critiques all talk about "consistent tone" being an important part of the story.

Anime takes a completely different approach, exploring the highs and lows, much like how life can go from a light hearted party to a car horrific car crash in one day, so does anime. This different approach can be quite polarizing, because somebody that wants action/horror series is going to also experience perverse and silly scenes in their show as well, much like how the story would play out in real life.

This is why people "can't get into" anime, it's the fact that when a lot of people sit down for a show they expect it to hold a tone that they resonate with. Anime plays so many different tunes in one show that to truely enjoy anime, you'll have to like (or tolerate) all the different genres out there.

I really like the feet on this image

OP here, I really like that wolf girl.

Where can I find more of her? Is she from a TV show?

The last two episodes were garbage because the creator had a mental break down.

Well the whole show spiraled dark and trippy cuz of the writer breakingdown. The studio was being indicted for embezzlement and gainax was fucked for a while, the writer and key animators came back to make the movie tho lul

That is actually an interesting analysis. Any source or papers on that? You seem knowledgeable of screenwriting.

Heh, didn't know that.
I watched an analysis because I didn't get the ending. As soon as the mental breakdown was mentioned, nothing more needed to be said.

And the studio ran out of money.

Naw it's more that westerners/Americans specifically don't think of it as a legitimate story/drama

They think of cartoons as juvenille, we spend hundreds of millions on trying to make tobi Mcguire look like a super hero instead of casting quality actors to voice act, especially considering it's probably harder to do well, or putting actual time or thought into the plots behind animated stories

Manga an anime are legitimate literature in japan, they're more watched than live action which is mostly soap operas trippy gameshows and extremely campy movies lul

No, accept that you are not a cringy weeb virgin.

...

I'm no professional or anything, though I did take quite a few "concept" classes for play writing with my theater design degree.

Beyond looking for an anime YouTuber that might have come to the same conclusion, I'm afraid that conclusion came from analyzing from those play writing and directing classes and drawing my own conclusion.

...

So the last 2 episodes are shinji in a room and nothing happening and 0 resolution

End of Evangelion successfully ties the knot and really makes the whole show. If you've never seen it you gotta

The giant robots fighting alien god thingers plot is rediculous. The actual STORY the whole point of the narrative is to show a difference BTW shinji an Asuka

And most people watching will HATE one of them (and dislike the other)

The idea of the show is a character piece that just examines 2 specific polar extremes of humanity, with pussy whiney shinji and idiot arrogant Asuka (with rei being perfect, cuz she's not normal)

People who are perfectly well adjusted and happy all around won't get neon genesis, but a spiral into madness and depression? Shits haunting lul

Beyond your analysis of Japanese culture to be a tad bit off (not everybody in Japan watches anime for example) you also assumed I meant only western cartoons.

The reality is what I say applies to all western media, from novels, plays, movies, tv shows, animations, and comic books. Tonal shift in american media specifically refers to shifting "out of tone" with the rest of the story. Tonal Shift in anime is basically synonymous with "scene change"

Seriously, the genre is immense. Have you ever tried Cowboy bebop or samurai champloo? Do you like action like DBZ, HxH and the like? How about Gundam (original one), Evangelion or Gunbuster? The classic Berserk anime (read the manga though)?

You should look for 26 or 50 episode series or at least series that have ended. Maybe recent stuff would one punch man, my hero academia, parasyte, steins;gate... again i don't know your taste. You have to look.

Do you want older or new animation? Sci-fantasy or fantasy?

Honestly, I hated all of them. The two were insecure pieces of shits and Rei had no character.
I did find it a refreshing change of pace from the regular mary sue shounen protagonists.

nobody has the time to start watching that long ass anime

Kek watch Japanese TV

Tonal shifting exists in all good literature, not just eastern vs western. Lack of tonal shifting in popular us cap recently? That's just garbage for the idiot masses, they don't wanna be confused. A good story is a good story, and for it to BE good the tone needs to change with the story (or else its...monotonous?)

You only notice it in a lot of the anime cuz the ones most watched this side of the world (that aren't naruto, one piece etc) are genuinely good, well told and complex stories

Melodramatic tho. The japs seem to love melodrama and anticlimax, wonder why

>Teach me to like anime. Am I just watching the wrong genre?
Maybe you just don't like the medium as a whole. Some people don't like books, some people don't like movies, and forcing yourself to try and watch it might be ruining your enjoyment. Try watching a series with a good English dub, like Cowboy Bebop or Baccano. maybe you'll be more likely to enjoy it since it'll have a closer feel to Western animation. Maybe it's Japanese voice acting that's putting you off.

Seriously everything on this list

Berserk is best Manga, not really a question the Anime ends way early and doesn't address more than the into arc basically

Champloo, bebop, bacanno are all incredible, short and we'll told, amusing storied

One punch man is great especially if you hate Anime, it's basically satire. What Deadpool is to American comics one punch man is to Manga

Parasyte and steins are also real good

This is good advice

Idk if anyone said this, but watch subtitled 100% of the time. They spend infinitely more on voice actors then we do to dub them, it's just higher quality subtitled

...

Well stop trying then. There are lots of other things to kill time.
As someone who does like it i think 90% (or more) of all anime is shit altogether. Finding the pearls is becoming increasingly tedious.

That said i remember Monster quite fondly.

This is true. There's just a fuckload of Anime and most isn't great, good ones are incredible tho

If you liked Akira, watch the original ghost in the Shell movie. Super neat

Also the Akira movie is just visual porn, it makes fuckall for sense compared to the manga, it's the first 3/8ths of the story with a fudged (tho awesome) ending

The manga makes it...make sense lul

Berzerk/10
Battle royale is also up there
Terraformars is a p good series except for the second season

"Another" is p dang good as well.

Actually this last part is a myth.

Unless you understand a language you will only get a quarter of the performance worth. In fact ANYBODY getting into anime for the first time should be watching dubs, a majority of the dubs produced are getting similar (or in some cases better) performances than the Japanese version.

However due to the fact that most people don't understand the language they will more often state that the "Japanese Dub = Better" when the reality is there are cases where the English dub studio paid more for it's actors than the original casting.

So, no, don't go around spreading that mentality. People have a right to enjoy it the way they want, always watch the dubbed version if available, switch to the subtitle if you find the acting to back distracting.

Monsters good, dark lol
Gurren lagen is on netflix, fun to watch (hell, kill la kill for that matter)
One punch man is short, awesome an hysterical
Hunterxhunter is real cool. Feels like DragonBall most of the time but gets really dark, more intense real quick

Check out spiraphobia
I fucking hate tumblr, but this blog got me more into the horror shit of manga/anime

Been reading vagabond, it's pretty fucking awesome, art is Damn near photorealistic

>I don't like anime, Sup Forums
>There are a few anime I've been able to watch that I actually enjoyed, but only in small doses.

So you don't like anime, but you only like it a little bit? Fuck you. You just want to complain about something. God damn hipsters...

Dude reading subtitles is not fucking difficult. It's the same argument as the godfather would be better if they just spoke English the whole time lul

The subtitles allow to piece a lot together in your mind instead of being forced to ignore the terrible, terrible English voice actors doing dubs. There are about 3 examples of good dubs (bacanno, trigun, flcl), and even they're very mediocre compared to subs

There's a reason the dub watchers are in the minority, and it's cuz anybody who gets into the genre at ALL drops the dubs asap

Been quite a few years since I was really into anime and have tried picking it up again recently, watched most of Monster then the Kara No Kyokai movies and I've been surprised at how cliche and coincidental every little thing is, It's off-putting to the point of cringey when being able to guess at every little scene because it's so predictable. Really upset by this since I used to love anime. Anyone have recommendations for stuff that isn't so predictable or cliche, I prefer the darker mind fuck type things.

Also FUCK Tokyo Ghoul, Watched it literally because a music playlist had music from it and I regret it so much. It had so much fucking potential only to be wasted with that bullshit half finished second season and that not-an-ending.

Look at
I looked more into it and there's a list for horror anime/mangas

Tokyo ghoul is garbage, parasyte is similar plot (kind of I guess) but way better, less edge lord

One punch man = best. Makes fun of all Anima tropes whIle somehow doing the whole Anime part better too lul

the general rule for finding good anime is to not
request any recommendations about good anime.
for something different try texhnolyze (25 ep) or logh (110 ep) or kaiji (2 seasons both 25ep, first one is 100% worth watching if you like psychological or gambling stuff)

Most animes are shit, and since most mangas out there are shit too it's not easy to find something worth watching.
I'd suggest you, if you want to watch something entertaining, with a unique vibe and character design, Ultimate Survivor Kaiji.
It's about a loser, a gambling addict that puts his life at stake to get out of debts. I got hooked to it after a couple of episodes, give it a try. It is also very hard to predict how the story goes on.
Another anime that comes from a very good manga is Monster by Urasawa, if you like psychological thrillers.

seriously i have to give myself another (you) just so this post could get more attention. everytime someone recommends good anime, shows like texhnolyze get ignored simply because they aren't mainstream. you can't expect mainstream anime to be good. it's all slice of life shit and little girls with huge tits harem shit. these 3 shows might very well be what you want to see from anime

That's my man.
(user from post after yours)

read the manga of Parasyte years ago, was surprised when they made it into an animu. And one-punch man is just really hard for me to get into, again tried with manga, without a story though it's so dry for me.

Gurren Lagann is shit. Ain't worth watching after ep 9, and the ending was the worst fucking attempt at recapturing it's soul that I've ever seen.

Great first 8 episodes, but a completely average show afterwards.

the english dubs are not horrible, it's actually the norm for the english dub and voice acting to be of a higher level.

However, because you cannot speak the language you cannot tell how the performance actually is.

If you were fluent in both languages it would be pretty easy to identify how much of a myth this is.

So you can be elitist about not wanting to actually experience an actual performance or you can shut the fuck up and realize that there is quite a majority of people watching, consuming, and paying for dubs.

Basically? Do some research on acting, perception, and sales data before you speak.

So? If you don't like anime don't try to like it. People has got his own likes. Anyways, do what you want.

try ghost in the shell sac, it's kinda cyberpunky like akira.

I don't like most anime but the series Parasyte has been my favorite so far. Give it a go, OP

>I don't like anime, Sup Forums
That makes sense. Westerners think that anime is some sort of adult thing but it isn't at all. Anime is for children, specifically children
