I would try but you're kinda right. It's a very limiting style to work with and a lot of bands half-ass it. I don't think they're all MBV-lite though, there's a lot of Slowdive-lite too.

Have you tried A Sunny Day in Glasgow? They got memed here a while back but Planning Weed Like It's Acid / Life Is Loss is a pretty cool shoegaze album with enough electronics to keep it sounding fresh. The rest of the band's discog is hit or miss imo but they're definitely doing their own thing.

I dont think slowdive, the boo radleys, the goslings, candy claws, pinkshinyultrablast, westkust, orange juice, the ecstasy of saint Theresa, spc-eco, have a nice life, or spectres sound like mbv. That's just off the top of my head
