I live in a small city at the tip of the Baja California Sur peninsula. Feels like a different planet here: being so far from the mainland and all.
It's a humid desert so the heat can get unbearable. Gets pretty lively during the summer but I always preferred the winter because at least then it becomes feasible to go for long walks. We eat fish, drink beer and race buggies in the desert.
Very relaxing place. Very far away from real civilization.

It really depends on what you like. But for big cities I'd say, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Puebla, Merida and mayeb Toluca. Monterrey is just meh and Tijuana is aweful. Also Guanajuato is god-tier, but not as big I think.

In Jalisco theres a lot of stuff to see, check the capital Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta and tequila, the capital has a lot of cultural stuff and Merida is also a pretty good beach. Avoid San miguel de allende is a tourist trap.

Don't be pretentious, don't show off, be polite, AND NEVER look for drugs or pick fights,in Mexico City specially in the more tourist areas or financial centers you can trust a police officer to a good extent, if not just ask a local, most places where you will be in danger have nothing in there for tourist to approach
Ask the locals for help, and if you are outside the mayor cities and need assistance make sure to have recorded the local emergency numbers, and if you have the choice you should trust the military first in case you feel in danger, they are there to help

People might stare at you because we don't usually see black people, but other than that, people don't care. The stereotypes about black people here are that you are tall as fuck, like basketball, and that you have great voices for singing, nothing else.
