Why is this not talked about here?

why is this not talked about here?

it's literal kinography

DROPPED

It's not a Marvel flick

films are not allowed in Sup Forums

Because it's not based on a comic book
Because of Sup Forums memers like you

more like what plebs think is kino

It's been a long time since I saw it, so I can't really dig into it on a critical level, but do remember that it was a fantastic film.

Bruce!!

Lanthimos is an auteur

Why are you too stupid for filters?

Why do you still think this board wants to discuss anything apart from blockbusters?

It's a genius deconstruction of the allegory of the cave and even showcases a possibility that Plato had not considered - exploiting the cave itself.

AHHHHHH

Unfortunately, the film's at least have to be current to generate much discussion. Even though I've seen this film, it was around 7 years ago, so I can't remember dat shit.

this is false though. there are regularly discussions of older/obscure films. those threads help generate more discussion because people watch them and then return to Sup Forums to talk about them

it was porn interspersed with mildly interesting scenes

not kino in any way

>it was porn

Typical American doesn't understand complex sexual themes.

Makes sense

Don't get me wrong, I strongly encourage branching out from the inane bullshit.

typical eurotrash confusing 'complex sexual themes' with multiple unsimulated sex scenes for the sake of doing it

What did you find unnecessary about the sex scenes? Every one had a specific purpose. And there was only like 2 "sex" scenes, and a few other heavily implied.

>The sex scene with the brother
Creates an atmosphere in the home. The father arranging his son to have sex out of fear of him lashing out and raping one of his sisters. Shows how far the father is going to keep his children "safe".

>The sex scene with the sister
Shows the sister dealing with confused sexual emotions for the first time. Also that character triggers the sister to branch out more and start to think independently. IIRC she gives her the Rocky tape, which effectively kickstarts the third act.

I liked the Lobster better, which I admit is quite more accessible.

Why the fuck were the parents messing with their kids like this to begin with?

...

It's a twist on the allegory of the cave.

The father is basically a sociopath and is doing everything he can to retain complete and utter control over his children. This is either to protect them or just out of a sheer hard-on for control.

From what I remember, I think it was more due to the father's control than compassion for the children.

There were a few genuine family moments that showed he did have some sort of base compassion for the kids. Like when he "translated" the Frank Sinatra song or when he went outside to get the toy airplane for them. That stuff makes me think he's operating out some form of love.

Been talked about to death years ago newfriend

No it wasn't.

Ah, yeah I forgot about that. Now I'm gonna have to watch it again.

Yes it fucking was. When I started browsing this board in 10-11 it had threads regularly discussing it. Dogtooth and whatever the flavour of the month Korean film was.

This. OP is about 5 years late. People brought up Dogtooth all the time when it came out.

Can't wait for threads about The Lobster in 2021.

>HURRR WE HAD THREADS ABOUT IT 3 YEARS AGO SO NO MORE CAPESHIT ONLY

I'd rather see threads like this than another fucking waifu or cunny or fucking DC vs Marvel shit. this thread spurred some actual discussion and you're acting above it. go back to your baneposting threads you fucktards.

The other sister had a fat ass.

The ending was fun to show to a friend. She screamed when the weight showed up.

ITT: European auteur wankfests that Sup Forums discussed to death when they came out so people like OP won't make the same mistake
>The Turin Horse
>Dogtooth
>Melancholia
>Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
>The White Ribbon
>Winter Sleep
>Drive
Am I missing some?

>i watched this with my vegan gf

Ever stop to think that maybe there are some great arthouse movies that already came out this year or the last year that you could be discussing to be ahead of the curve? So you don't look like a total slowpoke next time by making a thread of some old-ass movie?

i don't understand what your point is. just fucking leave the thread and hide it or some shit. little triggered redditor baby

Don't be a dense cunt, we are literally just telling the OP why it isn't discussed here. The fact of the matter is that everyone who was interested in the film and browsed this board did so years ago and discussed it to death, it was a flavour of the month film so no wonder nobody cares about talking about it now.

I see Alps as kind of a companion piece to The Lobster. It deals with death/identity in a similar way that The Lobster deals with love/relationships. It's really good.

I liked Dogtooth and I watched The Lobster the other day and I liked it too so I downloaded Alps, Attenberg and Kinetta. Which one should I watch first?

I'm just trying to explain why this thread isn't being taken seriously. Literally everything that can be said on this board about Dogtooth has been said already. Watch one of his lesser known movies like Alps

Not OP, but while they may have been discussed from time to time, they were still overshadowed by inferior films.

I'm not saying that Sup Forums needs to become some lofty forum for pretentious Film School fags, but the memes and blockbusters have really overtaken the entire board.

thank you user. I had to delete because I fucked up the sentence

>Winter Sleep
>European
Nice try, Mehmet

Christ dude just let the discussion be. It's better than at least half of the shit threads up right now. At least it's not capeshit or shitposting. He's attempting to spur discussion. More than most threads up right now can say.

>oh, you like ____?
>watch ____, and then we can talk
This is why no one takes you seriously, user

I wouldn't say "genius", but yeah, that's exactly what it is. Plato's allegory of the cave + human natural curiosity and ingenuity.

Everything about most movies discussed here has been said already. What's your point?

Get the salt out of your piss hole you urchin. Dogtooth isn't even that worthy of a thoughtful analysis: It's satirically weaker than an LVT film and the characters are even more cardboard than anything Haneke can come up with, which is saying something. Yorgos is overrated as hell.

confirmed for not understanding lanthimos at all. go jerk off to antichrist again

ITT: people overanalyzing

Alps, definitely. Then Attenberg. I haven't watched Kinetta.

>A teenagers attempts to bring a brilliant surgeon into his dysfunctional family takes an unexpected turn.
>starring colin farrell and nicole kidman

who hyped for killing of a sacred deer?

>why don't you talk about pretentious shitskin tripe?

>thread gets made about film that isn't capeshit
>people complaining about lack of non-capeshit film discussion instantly ruin thread by starting reddit tier circlejerk
bravo

>confirmed for not understanding lanthimos at all.
There really isn't much to understand about black comedy.

I mean his methodology and the way he writes characters. Not the substance.

>multiple unsimulated sex scenes

this interests me. I am going to watch this film

When you do make sure to make a thread about it to piss off all the capeshit fedoralords in this thread.

>satirically weaker
>characters are cardboard
Do you even know what you mean by this?

I do. Everything about Dogtooth is thin. There is nothing more to it than what happens on screen and people constantly try to make parallels to government propaganda and totalitarian regimes. It's incredibly hackneyed.

There were practically no characters in Dogtooth, just a bunch of interchangeable ciphers who exist to move the plot forward.

Watching it right meow

This is what Gummo wanted to be, came to mind

Lanthimos directs characters in a very subtle way unlike someone like LVT who write blunt and obvious walking cliches. I understand you may not have picked up on their characterizations. It takes a bit more focus.

>I understand you may not have picked up on their characterizations.
Wow one of the kids loves American movies. That's such an important nuance.
Wow the other two kids are in love with each other. Dude that's like so powerful and subtle.

Everything about Dogtooth is a cliche.

Hackneyed is very relative, and I don't think it really applies here. If you're talking about the allegorical nature of the film, sure it's nothing groundbreaking, but if that makes the film hackneyed, by that line of reasoning, almost everything is hackneyed.

It's like saying something is contrived; it's a lazy critique.

>Wow one of the kids loves American movies. That's such an important nuance.

But it is. That's literally one of the driving forces of the entire narrative. So not only did you miss the point of the characters, you also had a misunderstanding of the film itself. Watch it again.

not necessarely, those could be just things to keep them occupied and to add form to the lie

>So not only did you miss the point of the characters, you also had a misunderstanding of the film itself.
I understood it perfectly you dunce. Talk about plot convenience: the character nuance.
>The babysitter happened to have video tapes in her purse which causes the downfall of the utopia.
I'm sorry your dumb movie is so easy to understand.
I'd call Dogtooth totally contrived as well. But that's the problem with these "social experiment" movies: Directors like Haneke and Yorgos don't give a shit about portraying humans as people who could actually exist in the real world, rather shoving every ugly stereotype they can to give credibility to their made-up scenarios.

Bland and whitebred, the epitome of

bretty gud

Out of curiosity, do you like how Lynch directs characters?

>don't give a shirt about portraying humans as people who could actually exist
They're certainly abnormal, and not people you would typically encounter, but that statement is completely false. And at the end of the day, that's what makes them INTERESTING.

Watched that and Lobster recently, loved both. What now lads? Should I watch Alps? Any other films you could recommend?

The babysitter used to live at the house and had escaped.

She planned it.

You dense motherfucker.

The part where he ducktapes the tape to his hand then beats her with it had me rolling.

Alps definitely

Lynch is a mixed bag for me. Sometimes he has depicts his characters with warmth and humanity like in Elephant Man, Straight Story, and Wild At Heart, but his characterization in the rest of his movies leaves a lot to be desired. I mostly enjoy Lynch for his visual eye anyway.

I was a big fan of Lobster and Dogtooth, but I thought Alps was Dogshit.

>The babysitter used to live at the house and had escaped.
There is literally no indication of that whatsoever.

That guy had a secret family of slaves in his basement. He kept them secret from his real family upstairs for decades. Kind of a different scenario than what was portrayed in Dogtooth.

Fucking this.

I was reading an article that mentioned this movie the other day. Piqued my interests, but I always have apprehension about watching movies from buzzfeed-tier articles.

The Last Dragon

Then it sounds like you just don't like absurdist/unconventional characterization

I'll never understand people who need their films to have warmth and humanity. Fuckin boring. Just go outside and live if you want some anodyne experiences.

>different from what was portrayed in Dogtooth
How does one miss a point that hard? Kek

I'm kind of being a cunt because I didn't hate Dogtooth. I was entertained by it. But in the end I just don't see why it's so highly regarded.

Warmth and humanity are good things. If you weren't such a jaded kissless virgin you would probably realize that.

It's easy to miss something that is slapped-together and miniscule.

>warmth and humanity are good things
I'm not saying they're not, dipshit. I just don't know why they would be essential for ones enjoyment of a film, other than muh safe space.

>Warmth and humanity are good things. If you weren't such a jaded kissless virgin you would probably realize that.
Be more defensive over a simple question next time. You haven't answered the question either. The human experience is binary, to say the fucking least.

>I just don't know why they would be essential for ones enjoyment of a film
Because if a film has those qualities, it shows that the director isn't just some edgy faggot pandering to other edgy faggots. Todd Solondz makes edgy films, but he approaches his characters with warmth and humanity, which seperates him from directors like Haneke and Lanthimos who have nothing to offer the audience other than cynical misery.

>portrayed characters that are unreal
>give you an example of a character who surpasses any eccentric creature in either of those directors films
>buh... he was different than Dogtooth
I've encountered more eccentric, "unreal" characters on Sup Forums than in most Haneke films.

What was the question? HURRR WHY DO YOU LIKE MOVIES THAT ARE WARM AND HUMAN JUST GO OUTSIDE AND SMELL THE FLOWERS DURRRRR

The nature of life is predicated on suffering, and you're acting as if it's an irrelevant afterthought.

I may be cynical, but I'm guessing it's because I've been on this earth for a lot longer.

You "encountered" an anonymous person on the internet who you know nothing about. Nice going.

>>thread gets made about film that isn't capeshit
More like thread gets made asking why this board doesn't talk about babby's first Euro arthouse and then someone gets mad when people actually answer that question

How old are you?
>The nature of life is predicated on suffering
Your life maybe. And I'm willing to bet that you create a good portion of your problems.

So you've obviously never seen The Lobster

Its pretty obvious that you're not interested in a discussion, and you just want people to validate your own narrow personal narrative and apparently sperg the fuck out when relevant points of clarification are being asked. Not even meming, you come off as autistic as fuck.

He made a pretty simple point and you missed it entirely

I have. It was a bit better than Dogtooth. Still totally cynical and worthless as an allegory.

I used to spend a lot of time on 8chain, and the community was much smaller, and there were some people who would make threads every day (pics aplenty) that made me question every stranger that I'd encounter IRL. And I think you probably know what I mean, but you're grasping

>Your life maybe.
You're actually 12 years old, aren't you?

>there were some people who would make threads every day (pics aplenty) that made me question every stranger that I'd encounter IRL.
What

Go about your business then. Go watch another Eurotrash film that was popular five years ago and make a thread lamenting that no one discusses good films here. I hear The Hunt is really something.
