Thats the dumbest excuse Ive heard.
Black Sabbath werent metal, nor did they wake up one day and invent the genre either. They adopted the label fucking way later in their career.
Bands back in those days were influenced by blues music, folk, country etc... They all took shit they liked from other bands/genres and added it to their sound, one band listens to another and hears a crunchy distorted guitar, then its added in. One band hears double kick drums, they add it to their own.
Its like making a cake, you dont start off making a cake with a made cake already, you need various ingredients and have to combine them in order to make it.
They were, and still are a blues influenced hard rock band.

I'm not saying Sabbath as a whole should be called Metal, but man, look at their self-titled song. Remove the distortion and there's no way it's a Blues song.
If I were to hear the song today, with no knowledge or context of Black Sabbath prior, I would call it a Doom Metal sing for sure.
