Hey guitar fags, I want to buy a 2016 Les Paul standard T in Light Burst but I don't know how I'm gonna buy it. I've heard some horrid stories about buying Guitars online and I want to see the guitar before I buy but most of the guitar stores around me don't stock Gibsons. What do?

Then go to a shop that does?

Use Sweetwater

The guitar center that does carry them doesn't stock the one I want and if I end up ordering it through them I still won't be able to actually play the guitar before buying

DONT. Take your time, look for a used one in pawn shops/music stores/possibly even craigslist... I have played for over 20 years, and owned about 30 guitars, most of the time as a Gibson guy, but over the last decade, Gibson has been shit for QC, and that scale length neck/neck angle has inherent problems as it is, they are all more temperamental tuning wise than Fenders... after the last $1300 Gibson I got and returned, I've shifted more towards Fenders... Get a used one in good shape, that you can check out in person, you'll save money, and get a better instrument, just look up how to spot fakes...

You literally have to play every Gibson in a store to find a good one. No lie, any Gibson owner will tell you if one chimes in here. I don't own one. I would go with ESP, very consistent and reliable. On a budget? ESP ltd then. I've used mine to practice, record and gig. Had strings on it for 2 years gigging every weekend. Never broke a one. Progressive metal band too.

Judging on your writing, I'd say you haven't been playing for long. If that is really the case, I recommend you not getting a brand new gibson. Maybe try a used one first or look for epiphone models etc. It really is worth a try.

Can't you ask them to get one in?

Ignore this oldfag and use Sweetwater. They do actual quality control, instead of just pretending to like GC. And your instrument will be properly set up so you won't have to spend another $40 taking that same guitar back to wherever you got it to make it play well

Don't get so hung up on one guitar or brand. Go play a bunch and buy the one that plays the best for you. You'll probably be surprised at the one you end up with.

You work for sweet water or something. That's the most cucked advice I've ever seen. Gibbons are just over priced brand name bullshit, no matter where you go to get it. The most inconsistent build of an instrument ever.

If you have that much money to blow on buying a standard then lets be honest, its only gonna be a matter of time before you buy one anyway. The only thing is getting one that you want, the flame tops can vary wildly, the weight can even vary by quite a bit. Take your time.

Also +1 for sweetwater, but its only 2 hours drive for me from ohio so id shop online first, then go look at it before i'd buy.

You're right I've only been playing for 3 years now but I've played long enough to know I want to keep playing. I've had an epiphone for two years now and it's literally fallen apart. I just want this to be one of the last guitars I buy so It has to be perfect.

Sweetwater is good. But Gibsons are notorious. There are many advantages to buying used. The moisture in the wood has had time to......stabilize...meaning the instrument is where its going to be...
> They do actual quality control
they do an inspection, and if they have to set ups, but why should they have to, especially for a 'high end' manufacturer like Gibson? makes you wonder....

Every instrument has it's own personality, you have to search to find the good ones, especially with Gibsons though...

If you really have to have a new Les Paul, there is a '60's tribute out that is like half the cost of the traditional...still a gamble though. Elektra (one of the best Pauls I've owned was an old Omega) and Hagstrom have some Paul based models that are very good, and cost way less as well...

I'd take 3 or 4 "budget" priced guitars over an over priced Gibson, but i would love a Gibson one day.

Buy a Chinese fake and put some decent pickups in it, if it's shit who cares you spent 300 bucks, after take some time and look around in guitar store

Well that's your decision which model you buy, but may I ask why this one in particular?

i think they, GC, have a pretty good return policy. especially now for holiday sales. one can buy online and return in-store. amirite?

Prepare yourself for a heavy fucking piece of lumber.

You will own several guitars as a true guitarist. I own 3 classicals, 1 twelve string acoustic, 1 regular acoustics and 5 electric guitars. 3 combo amps and 3 half stacks. Two pedal boards with of pedals and I've sold some amps before I bought my house. My favorite guitar is the cheapest one I bought used on Craigslist. Life is funny sometimes.

Ya get a nice comfy wide as possible strap for it.

this is true, and it is only annoying if you are a shoulder-less lightweight yourself. I mean 10lbs isn't all that much and you don't wear out unless you are playing marathon gigs.

word 'em up.

>I've heard some horrid stories about buying Guitars online
Don't ever buy a guitar you haven't played

Guitar center is the worst. That company is reprehensible.

As you develop as a player you might find the guitar you thought perfect doesn't suit you any more. Take your time, find a second hand one. Play a few, get a friend who knows about guitars to check them over for you.

Im a huge Jimmy Page fan so I've always fantasized about having a Gibson Les Paul. The light burst looks a lot like his, the asymmetrical slim taper neck seems comfortable, and the electronics are pretty versatile with coil taps, a phase switch, and a natural bypass.

agreed. the Wal-Mart of music. Their return policy isn't bad though.

aditionally, I bought a 1975 LP Deluxe at a GC in Austin and it is all the LP i could want.

check it

I totally agree with you. I just want this guitar to be my first serious purchase.

Sweet

Wew lad, its your money, but I don't think it will be your last guitar, so rethink everything, if you really need THAT model etc. After that, do as you wish.

nice, my first guitar was a junior doublecut with p90's

>2016 Les Paul
doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of buying a Les Paul?

that's cool, do you already have a tele (most people don't realize how many of his recordings/how much of his sound was a tele)?

Invest in a good amp to be honest bro.

those are sweet, as are many "student" guitars. this one came with mini humbuckers and i bought lollar p90s for a goof.

ThisHave local shop do a set up.

here's my "student" guitar. '67 Esquire

It's semi affordable compared to vintage stuff but it also has modern electronics and weight relief. Gibson quality has severely declined in the past couple of years but if you have any other suggestions I would love to hear.

At ARMS show in SF '83. Played a set with Beck and Clapton too.

I keep hearing this and it seems to have been a common refrain since the '70s. "Artists" started playing Yamaha, Ibanez, etc.
I dunno man. Any ol guitar made on a Friday might have issues. Also consider today's workforce. Ish! Gotta play em all.

some dude mentioned a tele and gave me a half chub. i'd start there

wow, I love the esquire. i used to have a reissue i traded for an old guild polara, but i never should have traded it... that is awesome. i have an old duo sonic which is my current 'student' guitar of the collection, but it's nowhere near as sweet as your esquire...

I wish! Almost all of Zeppelin was recorded with a tele. But I really admire Page's live stuff, so powerful and most of it was done with his Number 1.

This.

if you really wanted to go for the page thing, you could get a Supro and a std tele and upgrade the pickups for about the same price as the Les paul...

I have a decent amp. Marshall dsl40c. Pretty good for practice and small gigs.

Duo's are awesome. My complaint witth student guitars are the small frets. I am committing some dollars to the Esquire for a fret and nut job. Then some new pickups are in order because my dog ate the stock one while it was out of the guitar laying on my bed. Been on the hunt for proper pickups ever since.
Your Duo may well be more enjoyable than that Esq.

Yes! Supro's are a force to be reckoned with, but they are pretty expensive.

OP, why a 2016?
You can still find some 70's stock for under $2K. Why 2016?

yeah it is a short scale but the pickups are unreal.

Modern benefits. And where can I find those under 2k?

I found mine at GC for 1600. No case, mais waaah, but it vibrated much more than the new stuff I played there. hate to say Reverb dot com but they're there. No local shops in your area that will hunt one down for you?
when i was a youngster I got a shop to hunt down an SG Custom for me.

Got mine on Amazon, surprisingly showed up in one piece

wait, what modern benefits? serious.

that pic i posted of my 75 has all the "problems" 70's fags described; pancake body, mini humbuckers, company owned my central american conglomerate, etc.. Reality tells me it's TITS!

Get a Gretsch like a real guitarist would

You will not regret owning a Gibson Les Paul.

agree. here is more guitar porn that i luckily posess

i concur, Doctor.

...

wait, better pic

Modern weight relief, slim taper neck, coil splitting, bypass and phase switch. Lots of versatility.

SG good.

Yeah!!! Definitely the next electric I'll invest in!

>going to continue playing
>last guitar you'll buy
that's not how that works... you're going to have at least 15 by the time you're 50.

thank you for excuse to brag on my old guitars. SG fun. Never fails me.

Plays Kashmir on that I think.

I see. Versatility is a real want. Good luck in your search. Get a local shop to source that for you.

That is sexy man.

new model Gibsons are terrible quality, you would be better off with an ESP with the vintage specs.

OP user can always make his own guitar.

Do you live in a swamp? What's happening to the finish? Do you not clean it after you sweat on it? What's with all the pitting and corrosion? You're lucky there's no child services for guitars.

that bass rig with the horn! lol

lol i don't like the newer weight relief, coil splitting-useless for me (extra stuff (pots, wiring) to go wrong at some point in the future, i despise the push pull gimmick), les paul = humbuckers...slim taper = marketing, and is not modern at all...but hey, if it works for you, cool.

one of the best 'cheap' guitars i ever had... not the most diverse range of sounds, but what it does it does very very well.

That is seriously funny. I bought it in Lafayette, La and it came from a warehouse in Baton Rouge. It is 49 years old.
Those cracks are called "checking" and the pitting is from human contact.

My Epiphone is just such a peice of shit that this next guitar is going to leave me in constant heaven for a long time.

Kek

i laffed too

What do you have user?

to answer your question: yes, i lived in a swamp when i bought it.

Don't buy a Les Paul faggot. Just get a nice telecaster. Les Paul's are SO overpriced. Fuck Gibson.

That's what I'm talking about. The White Falcon is a Beauty and so is the silver falcon. And the tone is to die for...

The main thing I'm worried about is the finish because they vary so much. So I'll definitely take my time and look around my local shops to see if I can find anything I like. My last resort will be ordering from GC and just getting it correctly setup there and if that doesn't work out multiple Anons said they had a great return policy.

it screams like a wookie that got his dong slammed in the door of an x-wing fitghter

I have a couple of strats (one '15 am std/rosewood, one early 2000's/mex/maple), a '03 tele, old '70s Japan 'lawsuit' Les Paul by elektra, '90s SG standard, a Sheraton and a Casino (both MIK), an old ibanez Ar-200 (one of the best guitars i've ever owned), an explorer...guild polara from the '90s, kramer baretta, restoring a jazzmaster, and building a partscaster (which at this point is just a procrasticaster). i don't play out anymore, so ampwise i just have an old '60s champ and a marshall class 5, i also have a deluxe reverb and pretty soon i'm going to get one of those new jc-40s
acoustics - mid 70's guild classical, a guild 12 string..a seagull sws.
basswise, i have a hofner , a mustang, a thunderbird and an upright.

Shit user. Do you have any kids?

Currently I play this Ibanez iceman, which is fantastic for metal. But I'm starting to like blues, jazz, and lighter rock. Is this guitar in this link a good well rounded guitar? I like to use distortion sometimes. sweetwater.com/store/detail/StratAPHHROW

no, or i would probably never have been able to keep my music stuff (or even afford it in the first place-for most of my friends who jam/old bandmates, kids was pretty much the end of it...), and my wife is still jealous enough as it is, i have to go full on stealth mode if i want to get anything new (and she still knows anyway)...

Here be, mah sg

Never buy Gibsons online. Or guitars for that matter. Too many fakes or dodge guitars kicking about.

You can still use the iceman for all that stuff (even though it doesn't look it)...

that strat you linked is cool.

If you want to feel like you're covering all bases (electric wise), you can pretty much do it with 3 guitars, one with humbuckers, one with singles and a hollow or semi hollow of some kind...

Yeah with Gibsons (and any guitar really) its best to try it first. Not all gibsons are alike, some are truly amazing, many are average.

Oh of course I do use it but I need another guitar so I can keep one in drop tuning

...

Gibson sucks. If you really want an LP get a high end epiphone and save a few grand. Or even better get an ESP or PRS
