The GOP is split up into several main factions and these are;

The Neoconservatives
The Religious Right
The Constitutionalists
The Tea Party and Libertarian right
And the until now leaderless Working Joe Republican.

What's most confusing is that most Republicans fit into more than one faction but here we go.

The Neoconservatives head the establishment, and want to advance the cause of globalist economics, the "Immigration is good, it increases GDP, we need amnesty it's the only way, TPP and TTIP are good!" Republicans, yet have a predisposition towards taxation anyway. See George Bush, Marco Rubio.

The Religious Right are the ones who make American Protestantism (aka the malign cancer that the Fundamentals started) their core issue, and are the ones from whom most of the extremely stereotypical stances on social issues come from (Gay marriage, partially for trannies, sex ed, abortion and other things). See Glenn Beck.

The Constitutionalists are the ones who believe that the most important thing is the Constitution, and whose anger is mostly directed towards people they don't like in attacks of YOU'RE GOING TO DESTROY THE CONSTITUTION. Their arguments are usually couched in terms of constitutionality, and also usually bring themselves to a self-assured level of ideological purism and intellectualism, but go beyond it and start to see themselves as the "True Conservatives". See Ted Cruz, Ben Shapiro, and Rand Paul.

The Tea Party and Libertarians are more of an undercurrent reaction to both the Neoconservatives in the GOP and Neoliberals in the Democratic party, and favour a hands-off government which does not interfere with people's lives and livelihoods, though the degree to this varies and often comes down to having a reasonable level of tax burden rather than no taxation or no government. In the details, this faction splits into these members from other factions, and those who are economically and socially Libertarian.

A good example of the TeaParty/Libertarian split is the difference between Rand Paul, constitutionalist libertarian, and Ted Cruz, a Tea Party & religious right constitutionalist.

Similarly, there are many examples of multi-faction allegiance - Neoconservative/Religious Right and Constitutionalist/Religious Right are the most common.

However, the one left out faction is the Working Joe Republican.

The average Working Joe Republican isn't usually intellectual or ideologically pure, or swings a certain way. In fact, it would be accurate to say that The Working Joe Republican most accounts for everyone who is only a soft member of several factions, and hold some swing for all if not most of the other groups - many see the value in the state performing certain duties (e.g. in ensuring healthcare markets exist competitively and social security) but believe that the government should keep at least an arm's length of distance away from involvement in the private and business lives of the public. Many believe that religion is the bedrock of moral value, but believe that that doesn't overpower the constitution.

It would false to say that only non-intellectuals and non-partisan faction members come under this group and in fact many dedicated members of the group do have strong interest in certain values; some are very libertarian e.g. Rand Paul, and some are very religious, e.g. Ben Carson, but most espouse at the minimum a strong belief in community and family which extends to the Nation which allows for co-operation, even when this crosses the established orthodox of a permanent Us/Them

It is this belief in the community and society values of the Nation-state which Trump captures a very joyous energy from - in a time of fracturing social values, a collapse in community and incredibly bleak horizons, it is exhilarating to finally find someone who makes people care about the health, wealth and success as a people, a culture and a nation.
